INTRODUCTION
The organizational theory and practices are the different techniques and methodologies
which the organization needs to follow so as to make the business run and work in legitimate and
powerful way. This incorporates all the part of the business whether be it culture and structure of
organization, inspiration, working example, style of administration, power inside the
organization and numerous other related things (Crawford, James and Oplatka, 2017). Every one
of these choices are to be taken by the organization so as to viably running the business in a
fruitful way and if these factors are not considered the businesses won’t be able to operate the
business effectively.
The current study is based over the company BRITISH AMERICAN TOBACCO (BAT)
which is a British multinational company dealing in manufacturing of cigarettes, nicotine,
tobacco and other related products. The company was founded in year 1902 and is headquartered
in London in England UK. The current study will outline and analyse the management styles
used by the CEO of BAT that is Mr. Jack Marie Henry David Bowles.
The current study will start by evaluating the management style being used by the CEO
in managing operations of company. Further this will list out the culture and structure being
followed by BAT and its impact over the employees of the company. Along with this the
discussion will also take place on the leadership style being used by Jack in increasing the
efficiency and effectiveness of organization. Furthermore the discussion will take place over the
effect which power, and conflict has upon the company and its performance. In the end the
discussion will be based on the different types of motivation and its techniques which are being
used in company for influencing employees.
MAIN BODY
A. Management style and principles and function of management used by CEO of BAT
In order to make the business a success, it is very essential to implement a management
style which will in effectively managing the business activities within the business organization.
This is important because if management of everything is not proper then it will have an effect
on the overall performance and productivity of the organization. Therefore, in order to become a
success, the CEO of BAT Jack Marie used the consultative management style. Under this
management style, the manager of the organization asks for the ideas and opinion of the team

members and gives value to each of the viewpoint (Zakaria and Ahmad, 2016). After doing so,
the final decision is being made by the manger. This technique is mainly useful in the certain
specialized fields were team members are the experts and the input provided by them is utilised
for taking informed decisions. This form of style assists in creating a bond with the staff and
builds trust. The CEO jack Marie has made use of this style and the reason behind making use of
this style is that it assisted CEO in getting the viewpoint and thoughts of the staff before taking
any decision which consequently lead to establishing a good relation with the staff along with
motivating and increasing the morale of the employees as it involves everyone while undertaking
a decision.
Along with the management style, there are certain principles and functions which are
followed by the Jack Marie with the aim of effectively managing the organization. The CEO
works on the planning function of management as it is the most crucial part of management if
planning process is not carried out properly it will result into ineffective and improper
management of the organization, because of this reason Jack Marie is involved in this function
and ensure everything is planned perfectly (Durant, Carlon and Downs, 2017). Along with this,
Jack Marie also takes into watch, the direction function as well, this due to the fact that as CEO
has prepared the plan and thus very well aware of it and so can provide better direction or the
pathway to go. This assists the CEO in ensuring success by accomplishing the desired goals and
objectives on time. Thus, CEO of BAT makes use of these functions to effective management
the business and attains desired outcomes and objectives.
B. Organization structure and culture at BRITISH AMERICAN TOBACCO and its impact on
employees
For the effective working of company the most important thing is to maintain a good
culture and structure within the company. Both of these are important as if the company will not
be able to manage the culture and structure then employees within the company will not be
happy and satisfied and this will result in decrease in efficiency of employees. For the effective
management of BAT, Bowles uses the hierarchical structure within the company (Ruben and
Gigliotti, 2017). The major reason for the use of this structure is that every employee work
within the hierarchical structure only. This structure assists the company in managing the
business in effective manner. The reason underlying this fact is that every employee knows that
to whom they have to report and from whom they will get all the instructions. This creates a

better impact over the employees of BAT as they know in advance that with which employee or
supervisor they have to interact and this will save time of employees.
On the flip side the culture also plays a crucial role in the management of employees and
the operations of company (Burke, 2017). The reason behind this is that is culture of company is
not good then employees will not be happy and satisfied. For managing culture Bowles uses
Handy culture model of task culture. The major reason behind use of this culture is that this
emphasises more on development of team. Thus, this will improve the working efficiency and
coordination among the employees. This culture will also have a good impact over the
employees and their working capacity within the business. The major reason is that the
employees when work in team then they are confident as more people are working in team on
attaining same goal. Thus, this improves working capacity of employees as they work in team
and more minds are working on same aim.
C. Leadership style of CEO of BAT in enhancing the effectiveness of organization
The leadership is the most essential aspect to be managed within the organization to be
successful. The major reason underlying this fact is that leadership is the art of guiding and
directing the employees to work in the same direction that is attaining the goals of the business.
If the leadership within the company will not be effective then this will have a bad impact over
the company and its performance. Hence, for the Bowels focuses on using effective leadership
style so that they can direct the employees in the direction of attainment of goals of BAT. The
leadership style being used by Bowel in managing employees within the BAT is transformational
leadership. The major reason for Bowel to use this style of leadership is that this style focuses on
identifying the changes and trying it to adapt within the company. This is the most important and
suitable style of leadership in this dynamic and ever- changing working environment.
The major reason for this is that when the company operates in the external environment
then there are many different changes taking place (What is transformational leadership? 2018).
If company does not adapt to these changes then this creates negative impact over performance
of company. Thus, here the transformational leadership assist in managing operations of
company. The major reason underlying this is that when the leader of company creates vision for
the attainment of the change then this assists the employees in accepting the changes. Hence, for
this Bowels make use of transformational leadership as this motivates the employees to work in
more effective and efficient manner. The reason beneath this is that the employee find it difficult

to adapt to these changes and the leader makes it simpler to adapt changes for employee by
setting easy mission and vision. Thus, this motivates the employees to adapt to the changes in
fast and effective manner and this improves the overall working of the company (Geier, 2016).
In addition to this when the company has effective leadership then the effectiveness of
the organization increases and this result in better attainment of goals of business. Further this
motivates the employees as when the company is taking measures for employees to adapt to
changes in easier manner then this motivates the employees to work much harder and in effective
way (Choi, Kim and Kang, 2017). Thus, this improves the overall working capacity of company
as well as the employees of the company.
D. Effect of Power, influence and Conflict
Power: In an organization, power generally relate to the synonym of authority in the hand
of the employee in the organization. It had been identified that organization generally used to
provide good sort of authority to different employee in the organization. This used to impact the
organization in negative as well as positive manner as well. As good amount of power in hand of
few employees generally used to create the situation of conflict in the organization. At the same
time power in the hand of employee generally used to make them more liable and attentive in the
organization. As all employees always look to retain the power posses by them.
Influence: Presence of influence generally used to impact the organization in the negative
way. As it has been identified that if there is presence of influence in the organization, it will get
difficult for cited firm in getting support of all the organization at the time of any new decision
will be made in the organization. As all employee generally used to follow the same path and
voice in the organization. At the same time positive influence generally used to work as a
mentoring in the organization. Positive influence generally comes from the leader in the
organization, this ultimately help the subordinate in the organization to build the variety of the
skill possess by leader.
Conflict: Presence of conflict in the organization used to impact the organization in the
negative way only. Reason behind highlighting the same is that conflict in the organization
generally used to make the different group in the organization. This ultimately used to create the
variety of the issue for the management of the company in regards of managing the trust with all
employees in the organization. This used to impact the efficiency of different employee in cited
firm. At the same time it also used to create good sort of issue for employees as they find it very

mind.
E) Types of motivation used at BRITISH AMERICAN TOBACCO
There are two main theories which are process theories and content theories which have
enabled CEO to work on building smart working scenarios for keeping up with all motivation
standards among employees working within company. Two factor theory states that there are
some factors at workplace which causes job work satisfaction among employees which have
been independently working to bring on new goals completion. Hygiene factors if well
established among company working scenario it builds on motivation to contribute more
effectively and also for rational higher synergy at work. The motivators factors on other hands
are larger incentives and work opportunities which create new goals within employees to
enhance wider new domains specialisation. This is content theory which enables company for
functional strength enlargement and active larger growth with smart working scope among new
working parameters. On other hand the process theories have also played major important role
for organizing new working governance ethics which are worked on to bring on larger vision
among company phenomenon. The process theory, specially Vroom expectancy theory has build
new pertaining motivation among employees to exercise higher functional innovation for longer
term and also to potentially enhance new domains specialised working innovation. Vroom
expectancy theory assumes results obtained from conscious choices among varied present
alternatives where purpose is to maximise new wok pleasure for employees (Andriole, 2020).
This theory minimizes pain among employees working aspects and the performance
factors are based on personality, skills, knowledge and abilities to larger goals innovation. By
understanding these theories it could be understood that CEO is widely focusing on new
diversity standards, to be established among employees working scenarios and for generating
work innovation and exploratory advancement. The motivation techniques such as monetary
incentives, non monetary incentives have played high importance role for generating smarter
work goals and wider specialised work aspects at British American Tobacco to serve consumers
with best services. The company is also widely focusing to integrate smart working methods and
developing brainstorming sessions for all employees, to yield diversity among their new

focus on divergence and new work growth platforms building, by keeping active force on new
leveraged goals and innovation.
There can be also usage of new artificial intelligence elements and new wider domains
specialised among services, which will fast deliver and also enhance brand name onto larger

growth scenarios working on among employees, there is productive display for keeping up with
navigated new parameters development (Ganda, 2019).
Further it is recommended that BAT must focus on effective leadership so that company
can manage its performance. For this it is recommended to the company that they must focus on
the use of democratic or supportive style of leadership. The major reason underlying this fact is
that when the company will make use of this style of leadership then employees will be
motivated to work in more effective and efficient manner. Hence, another major thing
recommended to the company is that when they must also develop an effective culture for the
company. This is particularly because of the reason that if culture will not be managed then this
will affect working of company. Further for this the major recommendation is to make use of
role culture where more preference is being provided on dividing work according to
specialization.
