Individual reflection about group-work experience
Introduction
Implementing a change initiative for the implementation of Ottawa Ankle Rule in the
orthopaedic department at A4 hospital was the group assessment and I was involved in it.
Here, in this paper, I am going to reflect my experience with the help of Gibb’s reflective
cycle that consists of different parts such as description, feelings, evaluation, analysis and
conclusion (Li and Peng 2018). At the end I will also include an action plan as per the format
of Gibb’s reflective cycle.
Description
The implementation of change initiative is helpful in exposing the students to various
complexities of implementing change in the healthcare settings. It also helps in understanding
from the planning stage to the evaluation stage. The successful change always requires the
efforts of a range of staffs. Also, allocation of different types of components that can suit the
strength of each person is also necessary. In order to propose the change initiative to the
health service workplace, I worked in a group in which all the members were associated with
different activities.
Feelings
At the beginning, I was quite nervous as various tasks were there as the change will
occur in variety of areas that include human resource management, clinical practice,
organizational development, clinical communication, data collection, reporting, quality
improvement, and many others. However, while working in a group, I was encouraged by the
other members and they supported me a lot in making the planning.

On evaluation, I can say that working in a group is always interesting as it provides
opportunities to learn in different perspectives from the other fellow workers. In this group
assignment, all of us were associated with different activities and in case of any issue, all
were so much supportive. But, sometimes, lack of coordination among the group members
caused various issues and several types of conflicts rose while planning the strategies which
were difficult to manage.
Analysis
Group activities are helpful in developing a host of skills that are highly essential in
the professional world. According to literatures, positive group experiences are supportive in
learning, retention as well as the overall success (Lee, Smith and Sergueeva 2016). A
properly structured group can reinforce knowledge that is important for both group and
individual work (Alfares 2017). Sharing a diverse perspective is also possible through a
group work and here, while working in a group, I learned that conflicts might come as
opinions may vary from person to person but, handling them with proper strategies and
making the right decision is highly necessary (Zhu 2015).
Conclusion
Finally, I can conclude, that implementing the change initiative in the healthcare
setting was easier as the activities were performed in a group and the whole task was
distributed among us which reduced the time taken for this. However, every time, the conflict
came was due to lack of coordination among the members but cooperation and assistance of
each other in a group helped the task to get completed in a faster way.

In future, while working as a professional health service manager, I will have to work
in groups, but, this experience will help me to get habituated with the situation easily. I will
also implement proper strategies to restrain the conflicts. However, while working in a group
in future, I will always try to maintain a proper relationship with the team members and seek
their assistance in case of any issues.
