ASSESSMENT 2
Discuss some general theories of organisational communication.
There are various types of Organisational Communication which plays an crucial role in
building up and enhancing the organisational communication among the shareholders, staff and
the society. As the communication is the main source of sharing information among the staff
working within the organisation. It can be made vertically, horizontally, directly and indirectly
within the organisation. The effective communication helps in completing their task in
prescribed time. There are 7C's which make a communication effective such as clarity, courtesy,
completeness, concreteness, consideration, conciseness, correctness. There are certain general
theories which make the communication effective in an organisation which are mentioned below:
Bureaucracy theory: “Max Weber” was the founder of this theory, and it focuses on
implementation of hierarchical system within the organisation. And as per the theorist the
employees of the organisation used hierarchical system while communicating with the seniors of
the management team of an organisation ( Bolten, J., 2020. ). According to the theory for making
an ideal organisation structure the impersonal communication will be used for protecting the
worker from the head and lead officials of the organisation by focusing on emotional factor of

the workforce. The theorist of this theory belonged to a classical school which believed in
strictness on the employees by emphasising on standardisation and specialization in work with
the help of channels of commands in order to make effective communication within the
organisation.
General system theory: This theory is based on and detailing with the functional
approach in the organisation. This theory was propounded by “Ludwig von bertalanffly”
according to the founder the main motive of the theory is formation of organisation made within
different parts which are inter related to one another. The miscommunication or false
communication can affect the whole system of the organisation. There are few factors which can
affect the communication which are money, labour, transfer of energy, resources and many
more. The founder of the same belonged to system school which believes on work beyond the
prescribed limits for making effectively communication.(Dwyer, 2019)
Functional approach of organisational culture: This theory was introduced by Deal
and Kennedy, it states that the corporate culture is an important sources of the organisation and
the organisational culture helps in specifying the role of particular employee towards other
employee. The corporate culture includes cooperative functional environment, rights, effective
rituals and networks. The main focus of this theory is to built and create a competitive
environment among the employees of the organisation, this type of environment increases the
spirit the of competing with the employees in the organisation and this will help in the growth of
the business.
Evaluate the barriers preventing students from returning to campus
An online education overrule the concept of traditional school education now students
can pursue their education by using online mode beyond the geographical limitations. It gives an
opportunity to the students do to part time jobs along with there education.(Kanter,.2019. ). Once
the pandemic gets over the university plans to start the classes offline classes but the students
are refusing and they are in favour of continuation of online study. In this relation university
recognise certain barriers which prevent students from returning to campus which are mentioned
below:
Physical barriers: It is the one of the major cause which stops student to return to the
campus as most of the students are residing far away from the university and it takes a lot
of time to travel till the university due to which their extra co curriculum activities gets

affected. Online education increases the number of students pursuing the education as
some are not able to purse their education due to the long distance of the university.
Financial barriers: it can be considered as one of the main cause for preferring online
education rather than the physical mode of education. In offline mode the student
required to be present personally in the university during the class, but in online classes
they can attend the lectures from anywhere even while doing their part time job which
supports them to pay the educational fees. And many students stay far and coming till the
university will cost them, and while online classes this amount gets saved. As the
education of UK is quite expensive which cannot be affordable by every one this may
leads to financial worries among students.
Emotional barriers: this barrier is one of the key reason of not returning to campus, as
most of the students are paying their university fees themselves by working as a part time
employee. And if the college starts offline classes than the students would not be able to
go to their jobs and in the circumstances of that they will not be able to pay their fees on
time , either will they be able to plan for their higher education nor be able to live a stable
life. This will break the students emotional from inside if they would not be able to study
further.( Ruben, B.D., 2018).
Listening barriers: according to this barrier students while pursuing their offline
education face the problem of communication due to hindrance cause in the classroom. In
physical classroom there several distraction in the classroom such as general chattering,
ringing of cell phones, late arrival of students and so on which break the momentum of
the classroom and this leads to listening barriers among students which creates disinterest
in the lectures and the professors also enable to deliver lecture effectively. Whereas, in
the online mode students can avoid such happening by just pressing a mute button and
they can record the lectures also which they can replay again to understand the lecture
without any disturbance.
Lack of common experience: As students in university are from different region with
different culture. In offline classes students are communicating with different students
who belongs to different culture, region and age which tend to make the students nervous
due to which they are unable to understand the information and not even able to share the

required details easily that they want to communicate. This becomes one of the reason of
non-returning to campus.
Outline the strategies your university has implemented to overcome these barriers.
As students are not in favour of offline line classes due to which university formulated
certain strategies in order to overcome from such barriers which are mentioned below:
Hybrid system: The university adopted hybrid system strategy to overcome above
mentioned barriers. As per this strategy university have divided students in groups which
are attending their class by using alternative mode. For example, some group of students
attend their lecture virtually while other students attend their classes physically. This
initiative will reduce the level of anxiety among students while interacting with other
students who belong to different culture, religion and are of different age group.
(Nsanzumuhire, 2020)
Proper maintenance of distance: There has been a proper sitting arrangements made for
students while attending classes offline, so that there is a gap between students as
students are having fear of infection due to classroom interaction. In this way the proper
maintenance of distance gets solved.
Proper sanitization: The universities before reopening the colleges are taking all the
required measures to fight with the COVID 19, all the surroundings are properly
sanitized, maintaining the hygiene of the university. Making sure students wear mask and
have adequate gap between one another. All the students are asked to wash and sanitize
their hands after getting in touch with anybody or after touching any object. (Shammas,
et,al, 2020. )
Medical facilities: There are arrangements made for the medical facilities within the
university for a quick medication and the student does not have to travel till the hospital
for immediate medical check up. The doctors are fully qualified and are best know for the
treatment for the COVID illness. Students may fall ill after interacting with each other
and will increase the possibility of them falling sick, so the medical facility within the
university will be a great help. It also not effect their financial condition as it will taken
care by the university itself.

Use of appropriate mode of communication: As listening barrier reduce the interest of
students in attending the class, the university provide appropriate mode of
communication to students and professors so, they can address their students clearly and
audibly and can make them understand the topic without any trouble. To overcome the
elements of distraction of class, cell phone ringing etc, university made a rule of not
taking the cell phone with them at the time of lecture. University has also introduce
lecture record system in the classroom so in case if the student faces any issue in the
classroom than the students can understand the lecture later on without any disturbance in
their surroundings.
Alternate class: There has been a introduction of alternatively classes, which students
and the teachers come on alternative days to break the chain of the disease. In this way
students can even manage their part time jobs and it would not effect them in any area.
(Mophosho,. 2021)
CONCLUSION
According to the above report it can be concluded that effective communication plays an
important role in exchanging all the data. This is helpful to the person providing the particular
details to the concern to whom the information needs to be given. Communication is a source
which is useful in sharing their views, details to any other person that is required to have a
understanding among all the people which leads in the achievement of organisational goals. It
also states all the theories of organizational communication, that mention in which way an
