2SIGNIFICANCE OF PARSE’S THEORY IN CONTEPORARY WORLD
Abstract
This report summarises the decision of a hospice nurse assisting an elderly couple following
Parse’s theory of nursing. The case study revolves around Benn, Anne, and the disturbance in
stability of Benn’s mental condition regarding the death of his wife, Anne. The hospice nurse
assisting them followed Parse’s theory of nursing. The following paragraphs are an account
of the various advantages and disadvantages of Parse’s theory, its relevance in the
contemporary world, and it is comparison with the theory of self-efficacy. Proper nursing
plan of care involving both the theories are required for better implementation of care
provided to patients.

Introduction
The aim of the report is finding the relevance of Parse’s theory of Nursing in the
contemporary nursing practices and its importance in the case study mentioned. According to
the case study, Benn and Anne are an elderly couple, Benn under the supervision of a hospice
nurse. Benn could understand that her wife would soon be no more in the world. This
revelation made him mentally unstable .The hospice nurse was well aware of the
situation .The strategies taken by the nurse to help her patient based on Parse’s theory of
nursing have been described in the paragraphs below.
Discussion
Actualization of Parse’s theory of Human Becoming in the present context
Parse has propounded four ideas, which are seen in various assumptions, concepts as
well as propositions as stated by her theory. The ideas are co-constitution of health, mutual
process of human and universe, freedom of human and his choice of different ways of
becoming and finally, the multi-dimensional meaning given to becoming and being of
invisible human (Masters,2014) . In this case, Anne and Benn are two people who believe in
afterlife and the fact that their daughter and grandchild are alive or reside in the shooting
stars. She focussed on the psycho-spiritual-social approach rather than conventional
approaches of biomedicine. Parse’s theory is significant in this case and can be utilised here,
as it will allow the nurse to give importance on quality of life rather than usual medicinal
practices. Therefore, according to the present situation she would comply by their beliefs.
According to Parse’s theory since care of the patients come before medicinal procedures, she
would understood that Benn’s belief was unnatural and non-existential and he had lost his
mental stability after sensing that her wife might die. Therefore, she would align with his
beliefs and try to comfort him the way he would understand.

4SIGNIFICANCE OF PARSE’S THEORY IN CONTEPORARY WORLD
Characteristics of human becoming nurses: Strength and Weakness
There are vivid and various characteristics of a human becoming nurse. Nurses
following Parse’s theory generally follows the inductive-deductive procedure. It involves
derivation of postulates, assumptions, concepts, principles especially sciencing
methodologies regarding the paradigm of human becoming (Alligood, 2017). Within this
perspective, people are usually conceptualized being unitary entities. Nurses following this
concept has multidimensional experiences of all three spheres of time. Health is not about
adaptation to the environment rather it involves being as well as becoming. Thus, nurses
consider the universe and humans involved as inseparable entities.
Each theory has its own strengths. Nurses following Parse’s theory have a distinct
principle, which is remarkably different from other disciplines. It is highly useful in
implementations involving education, research methodologies. Parse’s theory provides an
insight into other theories like laughter, grief, hope and related emotions.
However, there are various weaknesses to this theory. Here, research regarding
Parse’s theory is within a closed circle. The theories are difficult for comparison with other
studies where standardized questions and control group required are missing .The proposed
nursing diagnostic procedures are not utilized, against the idea of person engaging in a lively
experience. Moreover, it is not applicable to novice nurses and inapplicable to emergent,
acute care.
Challenges faced by health care units on following Parse’s theory
Nursing practice, which follows Parse’s theory of human becoming, is much different
from contemporary nursing practices (Tappen, 2016). Parse’s theory focusses on the three
parameters like health, environment, and the person or individual. Thus focussing on factors

involving mental attachment and care, nurses would often lose their professionalism, leading
to a slack in productivity. Moreover, complying with the beliefs of the patient may not be a
good idea as it might be a problem in treatment procedures. Such theories involving present,
past and future are not pragmatic and would not provide a solution in dire emergencies.
Contemporary theories include quality, safety, effectively and equality of the nurses
(McKenna, Pajnkihar & Murphy, 2014). Moreover, such nursing theories require therapeutic
presence, which promises guiding practice (Maniago, 2017). Therefore, native theories like
Parse’s theory do not align with nursing strategies recently.
Relevance of Parse’s theory of transcendence in the case study
According to Parse’s theory, mobilisation of transcendence is required in the principle
of Nursing (Barros et al., 2019). Here the subject has the maximum possibility of
transformation. Similarly, theory of self-transcendence propounds how humans focus on
life’s meaning interpersonally, or connect with the environment as well as other aspects of
nature, integrating the present ,past ,future and channelling it in the well-being or healing of
the nurse which is one of the well-defined parameters of nursing(Smith & Leer, 2018). In
accordance with the current situation Benn could realise that Anne would soon breathe her
last. He started to think about her daughter and granddaughter visualising them as shooting
stars, which was proof of his unstable mental condition. Thus, the nurse would include
various counselling strategies in order to comfort her patient. She would make Benn accept
the present situation and beyond all realizations as well as physical needs, her main intention
would be taking care of the patient and providing mental support over all requirements. Thus,
she would follow the theory of transcendence according to Parse’s theory.
Difference between the self-efficacy theory and Parse’s theory of nursing

6SIGNIFICANCE OF PARSE’S THEORY IN CONTEPORARY WORLD
The theory of Self Efficacy is utilised in nursing research, which focusses on clinical
aspects of education, care, competency of the nurse as well as professionalism whereas
Parse’s theory focusses on the care of the patient above all clinical aspects. For competency
of the nurse development of interpersonal skills are necessary and can be increased through
simulation pedagogies (Chen et al., 2014). However, Parse’s theory believes in the spiritual
explanations of life and its relevance in the treatment of the patient, which does not depend
on the development of interpersonal skills. Including a proper nursing plan of care included
firstly diagnosis of the patient, outcomes or goals that are achieved, interventions where the
nurse would find how to care for the patients by asking pain scale questions, providing
medication. Finally, the nurse should evaluate the status of the patient’s improvement
throughout the stay.
Conclusion
Concluding to the above case study, Parses theory of nursing still has its relevance in
situations including the case study. There are distinct characteristics followed by nurses
practicing the Parse’s theory, and advantages and disadvantages are there as well. Apart from
it, the theory of self-efficacy can also be applied implying to the current situation. Both the
theories are applicable in providing care for the patient with a concrete plan of action. Thus,
the nurse assisting Benn have been following Parse s theory of nursing for providing comfort
and such theories can be relevant in the contemporary world, if used at the proper situation.
