Abstract
This study has explored the importance of partnering with consumers through the case study
of Jack who was admitted to hospital for his back injury due to an accident. The second
standard of nursing principle has been used in this study focusing on the philosophy of
family-centred care. The theory used here is partnering with consumer which is based on
consumer communication framework. Erikson’s 8 stage of psychological development ha
been mentioned in this study to highlight impact of psychological concept on effective and
ineffective care. Th concluding part has summarized the entire concept.

Introduction
Partnering care is an important aspect of nursing care philosophy which denotes the strong
communication and bonding between patients and nursing care staffs which will be analysed
in this study based on Jack’s experience in hospital. Partnering with the consumers is the
nursing government standard which will be described in this study .This case study has
depicted the overall healthcare experiences of Jack that include the lack of proper family-
centred care and effective nursing care communication to justify the nursing code of ethics.
This study has described about the importance of partnering care with the effective
implementation of quality care, patient care communication and partnering patient during the
care process. The study will emphasize on the nursing philosophy- family-centred care that
focuses on involving family and near ones of the patient during the care process for the
physical and psychological wellbeing of patient. Erikson’s 8 staged psychological theories
will be discussed along with a nursing code of ethics based on Jack’s experience in the
nursing care organization. The standard 2 of nursing principles will also be used to
demonstrate Jack’s experience.
Analysis:
The nursing philosophy of family-centred care which will analyse the partnering with
consumers theory and consumer communication framework based on second standard of
nursing ethics should be implemented by the nursing care staffs to ensure healthcare
wellbeing of Jack. The philosophy of nursing cantered care helps to improve the
communication and bonding between the care staffs and patients and their family keeping
accordance with nursing care principle. The required nursing care principle to improve Jack’s
healthcare situation should be the ethical maintenance of authority, accountability and
responsibility for nursing care practices which can coordinate the partnering with consumers
standard (Nickel, Weinberger &Guze, 2018). Partnering with consumers is the second
standard of nursing ethics which enables care staffs to develop effective communication with
the patients and their family to promote the quality care process. The quality care must
include a proper psychological understanding which can be derived from Erikson’s eight
stages of psychological development. Scientist Erik Erikson has described the stages of
human psychology which starts from trust versus mistrust at the age of 0 to twelve months
and ends in the stage integrity versus despair at the age of 60 or more("Erickson’s 8 Stages of
Psychosocial Development | Education, Society, & the K-12 Learner", 2019). Jack is in the

seventh stage of Erikson’s psychological development which states the contradiction between
generatively and stagnation.At this stage the adults have startedto contribute for their next
generation of the society by offering some meaningful andpositive works. Stagnation is
observed when the middle aged adults do not contribute for thesociety and Jack was suffering
in this stagnation stage. Jack was unable to contribute for hissociety and family because of his
back injury.As a result, he was suffering from depression also. It was important for the nurses
to maintain professional ethics and accountability while treating with Jack. They should
promote partnering consumers theory by informing Jack about his entire healthcare situation
and involving his family to decide on behalf of him. Here, nursing care communication plays
pivotal role to ensure the both the physical and mental wellbeing of patients Nursing care
communication plays important role in this case scenario ("Ethics", 2019). Moreover, this
case study has properly shown the instances of both ineffective care and effective care.
Ineffective patient care defines lack of accountability, responsibility, lack of partnering and
inefficient communication with the patientswhich Jack experienced when many of the nurses
paid no heed to his injury initially.(PECCI, 2013). The case study has clearly defined this
entire issue. Some of the nursing staffsin the hospital were busy in conducting paper works
instead of communicating the family of Jack which strongly opposes the philosophy of
family centred care. Those staffs were inefficient in developing nursing care partnership with
the patients to know their physical and mental health issues. Instead of analysing the
psychological development stage of Jack, the nursing care professionals examined his
physical injury and started paper works without making any further conversation with him.
Apart from that, the care professionals have not developed any proper communication with
Jack toconvey further necessary information to him.According to the Nursing care ethics,
information delivery is important to promote the partnering consumer’s standard which is
lack in this case scenario. The partnering care includes a properunderstanding of patient’s
physical and psychological aspects, accountability to provide evidence-based care and
ensuring patients to communicate his family during the decision-making("What Is A Nursing
Care Plan and Why is it Needed? | RNCentral.com", 2019). However, severalcare staffs have
omitted all these aspects of partnering care. Moreover, the surgeon of that hospital was not
efficient enough in conducting the critical surgery which opposes the integrity of quality
nursing care.Effective care with proper communication could be important for Jack to
improve the treatment of his injury.

Effective care in this case study includes has been observed when some nurses and nursing
staffs guided Jack during his treatment by providing him healthcare information.. Thenursing
care professionals of the hospital properly maintained the ethics of informative patient care
guideline by informing Jack about the ways of improvement of his injury, surgery and
physiotherapy. Jack was properly communicated by many of those nurses while conveying
any healthcare information which properly highlights the ethicalconsiderations of partnering
with consumers. For example,those helpful nurseshave guided Jack to choose physic instead
of surgery as the surgeon was not efficient enough for critical surgeries. The information-
centric care has integrated required obligations of effective care. Hence, nurses have taken
proper care of Jack until he got back to normal life and it has shown the responsibility and
accountability of thosenurses towards their patients("NMBI - NMBI Scope of Practice:
Responsibility, accountability & autonomy", 2019). Effective care signifies the proper
maintenance of communication, nursing care integrity, psychological developmental stage of
the patient and ethical maintenance of nursing code of ethics.A proper application of nursing
philosophy, ethical standards and framework can be effective to understand the importance of
effective care("Principles of nursing practice | Royal College of Nursing", 2019).
Family centred careis an integral nursing care philosophy which properly communicates the
partnering care theory strategies to improve the quality of effective care and justifies the
consumer communication framework. The suitability of the nursing care depends on
developing a strong partnership between nursing professionals and patients. Partnering with
nursing care theoryconsumers is the standard two of nursing care principles which depicts
that nursing care staffs should develop partnership with the patient and his family. Criteria of
partnering with consumers are partnership for service planning, partnership to design care
and partnership to evaluate the nursing service measurement. The relationship between the
family and patient-centred care with partnering with patients ensures nursing integrity and
utmost professionalism ("Partnering with Patients to Improve Safety - ACOG", 2019). The
hospital should concentrate more family centred care while treating Jack in his injury. This
could ensure a psychological support to Jack that may promote his intervention process.
Patient care communication should always be highly prioritized while partnering with
patients and their families("10 Patient Teaching Strategies for Nurses", 2019). They should
provide sufficient healthcare and psychological information about the patient. For example,
nurses of the hospital have communicated with Jack to provide him healthcare suggestion.
Moreover, they guided him to choose physic instead of surgery for better result. Exchange of

healthcare information alsoplays animpactfulrole in this partnership centred care. A healthy
exchange of healthcare information between patient and his family with nursing care staffs
clarifies the healthcare situation of the patient. For instance, Jack has asked for more
information after the suggestions of nurses to expand his healthcare knowledge base. At the
end, the interviewer asked Jack to advise something for junior nurses and Jack mentioned that
the nurses should maintain effective communication with patient which is the key
characteristic of the fourth stage of Erikson’s psychological development("psychological
development | Definition, Stages, Examples, & Facts", 2019). This stage also informs about
the importance of exchanging nursing care information.
Conclusion
The application of second standard of nursing principle through consumers communication
framework has focusedpartnering consumer theory and to promote the philosophy of patient
and family centred care through Jack’s both effective and ineffective care experience in the
hospital. Communication plays valuable role in aligning the nursing philosophy and standard
two of nursing care principles. This entire concept has been properly described with the case
study of Jack, a forty year old patient who was admitted in hospital for his back injury due to
an accident. The psychological connection between patient and his family and nursing staffs
has been demonstrated through the case study of Jack. The importance of exchanging care
information has been highlighted in this study through the Erikson’s 8 staged psychological
development theory. Various aspects of effective and ineffective care have been
demonstrated in this study to glorify the importance of developing partnership-centric care
with patients. The nurses should be more efficient in conveying patient care information and
the patients should maintain conversation with nurses to get more care information.
