Practice development is a continuous journey for innovating and developing the
settings of care for the facilitating engagement among the patients, their families and the
teams in a person-centered way. This engagement is initiated by the team for the
development of the skills and knowledge and for changing the culture of care within the
organization (LoBiondo-Wood and Haber 2017). The major commitment and the values
underpinning the practice development of the healthcare professions are the following. The
paper focuses on the values of practice developed by the healthcare professionals

Enable facilitation and support: Practice development has various key characteristics. Within
the surgical unit, the focus should be given to both the care and the medical services in the
unit. These include facilitation of patient’s relaxation level, comfort and family-centered care
in the unit (Billett 2016). Furthermore administering with the medications and proper

consultation with the physicians and other doctors regarding the further procedure of the
required care are some of the main factors of facilities and support that should be provided to
the patients in the surgical unit.
Re-collaboration and partnership: In a surgical unit, proper coordination, implementation,
administration and communication with the overall operations of the unit is extremely
essential for documenting the progress of the patient. Furthermore, it is also important for the
health care professionals or the nurses of the surgical unit to initiate re-collaboration or
partnership with the family members of the patient and give proper support, counseling, and
consultation as required.
Person-centered care: The healthcare professionals must initiate proper care services within
the surgical unit. It is the responsibility of the nurses to receive, assess and monitor the
holistic requirements of the admitted patients. Furthermore, some of the other responsibilities
or duties related to person-centered care include, taking special care of the children below 8
years and adults above 60 years (SastreFullana et al. 2014). Documentation of the medical
progress of the critical care patients on the electronic charts is also an important factor that
should be followed and maintained within the surgical unit.
Commitment to active learning and development: The notion of practice development
includes ranges of approaches and real-time practice settings within the surgical unit. The
health care practitioners get ample opportunities and chances to develop and learn from the
doctors and higher practitioners within the surgical unit.
Culture transformation: Some of the basic principles in connection to practice development
values within the surgical unit include effective treatment of each and every people
irrespective of any cultural barriers (Billett 2016). It is important for the practitioners to
respect the rights of each and every patient as a person.

Evaluation: The evaluation approaches to practice development includes the demonstration of
outcomes and impact of a specially organized programme of practice development.
Furthermore, the evaluation generates new knowledge that initiates contribution to the
evidence base.
Practice development programs are the key tools in engaging the healthcare teams and
the changing practices. The practice developments have been utilized in various ways for
enhancing the clinical services. These include the increase in quality and safety in healthcare
in a unit for the development of values and priorities related to services and for the
improvement of the communication skills among the healthcare team.
