Healthcare reform is a program that is mainly controlled by the government and is
focused on delivering an improved healthcare system to the common people of a country.
This program is focused on various aspects like improving the quality of healthcare,
reducing the cost of healthcare facilities, increasing the access to the healthcare services by
common citizens and various others (Braithwaite, Matsuyama & Johnson, 2017). All those goals
are directed at the promotion of a disease free community and the wellness of the common
people. In order to continue the promotion, the reform program must be under constant
monitoring of a management team, who would make constant assessments on how the
improvement is going on along with identifying further requirements to improve the quality of
the whole healthcare system. The role of a nurse in this program is to actively participate in the
assessment of the efficacy of a particular healthcare system, which is enrolled under the
healthcare reform program, in improving the quality care of the patients. The nurse should also
make suggestions on the improvement of the care process.
A law passed by US government in 2010, in order to promote the patient protection and
the affordable care, introduced many aspects promoting the wellness and prevention. This law
provided about 25 million American an easy access to healthcare services, reduced cost and
various other benefits (Shaw et al., 2014).
Hence it can be concluded that the healthcare reform programs introduce various changes
in the existing healthcare systems to improve the quality care in the patients, which in turn shifts
a disease-oriented community into a healthier one.
