Homework Assignment
AI Summary
This assignment focuses on assessing the risk of errors for a 4-year-old patient, Ruby Bell, admitted with gastroenteritis. The student identifies communication barriers due to the patient's age as a primary risk factor, potentially leading to diagnostic, communication, and medication errors. A search strategy is presented, utilizing Boolean operators and peer-reviewed articles published within the last five years. Five relevant articles are identified and explained, emphasizing their importance in understanding nurse-patient communication, effective speech skills for pediatric nurses, children's participation in healthcare, communication crises in pediatric settings, and the roles of nurses and parents in caring for hospitalized children. A Harvard reference list is included, citing the selected articles. The assignment demonstrates an understanding of how to conduct a literature search and apply the findings to a clinical scenario.

Ruby Bell is a 4 years old child admitted to hospital with Gastroenteritis. Her parents could not stay with her in hospital as they have other children at
home to care for. Communication is the two-way interaction where feelings are shared both verbally as well as non-verbally. While treating the patient,
her age can be one of the greatest barriers as in this age, children cannot express their needs. At this age, she is unable to explain anything clearly and
due to this purpose, it becomes difficult for the nurses to understand the exact issues all the time as communicating with the patient becomes difficult
due to her age. If the communication process is not clear and the proper issues are not diagnosed then providing medications might be challenging for
the caregivers. The patient can be deprived from receiving proper care and therefore, age is the main barrier which can cause risk of errors such as
communication error, diagnostic error and medication error in this case (MacDonald-Wicks and Levett-Jones, 2012).

question
The first article is a medical journal, published in February in the year of 2019. It is a journal article that describes the importance of effective
communication between patient and nurse to avoid medication error. While providing care to children, inappropriate communication may cause
diagnostic and medication error and hence the article is relevant (Junaid, Rafi and Khan 2019).
The second article is a journal of pediatric research which was published in June, 2018. It is a journal article that describes the effective speech skills of
pediatric nurses and it’s affecting factors. The study mentioned the effective speech skills of nurses who takes care of children and depicted how clear
communication help in providing better care and what are the strategies to achieve them. The article is relevant because here in this case, the patient is
a child and due to her age error or gap in communication can affect the medication process (Küçükoğlu et al. 2018).
The third article is an international journal of qualitative studies on health and well-being and it was published in the year 2018. This article discusses the
importance of children’s participation in the healthcare process and the healthcare professionals’ perspective in this regard. The article states why it is
difficult to take care of children due to their inactive participation. Here this article is relevant because in the case study, the patient is a child and her role
is important in the treatment process and hence nurses should implement strategies to effectively communicate with the patient (Harder, Söderbäck and
Ranheim 2018).
The fourth article was published by paediatrics and child health department in June of 2017. This scholarly journal article is a qualitative study that
describes communication crises with paediatric patients. It also discussed the effects of such crises and hence the article is quite relevant and worth

discussing here (Sandhu, Cooke and Barnard 2017).
The fifth article is a journal of nursing children and young people. It was published in March, 2016. This scholarly journal article clearly discussed the
roles of nurses and parents while taking care of hospitalized children. In the case study discussed here, the patient is a child admitted in the hospital and
this journal article is relevant as it can help to identify the role of nurses while providing care to the patient (Bedells and Bevan 2016).
