IMPROVEMENT OF PATIENTS’ SAFETY

germ-free and get basic medical facilitates in the purest environment from expertise hands. In this
study, the analysis of a document related to the role of social media in meeting the obligation of
nurses under national law has been done. The considered document is presented by the Nursing and
Midwifery Board AHPRA in November 2019. In this document, a guideline for better use of social
media by new graduate nurses as well as other nurses has been implemented by the government.
The title of the guideline is “Social Media: How to meet your obligations under the National
Law” (AHPRA & National Board, 2019). In this study leadership quality of the new graduate
nurses while taking care of the safety of their patients concerning the respective social media
guideline and the atmosphere of the hospital is discussed effectively and efficiently (Daly, Speedy,
& Jackson, 2015). Some appropriate strategies are also provided in the end to deal with the
identified challenges effectively and efficiently.
Leadership Role and Social Media
In every organisation there is a great need for leaders, which can help employees in dealing
with the smallest to biggest problems. This further can help organization in the accomplishment of
their overall objectives. In hospitality units also there are nurses as leaders, which lead new
graduate nurses and other nurses to accomplish their tasks in the best possible and proficient
manner. The nurse as a leader holds some authority and responsibility which can help in directing
other new graduate nurses in the right direction, to fulfill their day to day goals and the ultimate
goal of the business. Social media also plays an important part in analysing the management of new
graduate nurses by the leader. There are some parameters that every nurse has to take into
consideration while using social media (Cope & Murray, 2017). The new graduate nurses get
motivated, guided and directed by the leader to work for the safety and security of their patients
even from the evils of social media as well. In this process of leading the main motive of the head
nurse as the leader is to maintain records of the patients effectively, optimal performance of new
graduate nurses, conflict management, ethical considerations, etc while accomplishing their duties
and also while using social media (Holten & Brenner, 2015).
The most crucial duty of a nurse is to bring safety to their patients, nurse as a leader try all

graduate nurses to maintain the dignity of their profession (Boucaut & Cusack, 2016). In this
course the whole group of new nurses is directed by head nurse as a leader, to comply with
confidentiality and privacy obligation, consider the obligations of code of conduct of the healthcare
unit, maintaining of professional boundaries, professional communication with patients when
required, etc. these guidelines are described by Nursing and Midwifery Board AHPRA. There are
government measures as well that help the leader of new graduate nurses to get the rules followed
and monitored periodically and effectively concerning the use of social media by the staff (Willis,
Carryer, Harvey, & Pearson, 2017). This, in turn, helps in maintaining the safety of patients in the
hospital as well as outside it.
Challenges while Leading
The challenges that are faced by the head nurse in leading its team of new graduate nurses,
appropriate use of social media as well as maintaining the safety of their patients are as follows:
a) Resistance form Change: New graduate nurses like any other employee try to resist
change or any rule implemented by the leader in the hospitals. The human nature is to
resists what is new to keep track of life like before. Hence while a leading bunch of nurses
the leader usually encounters many types of resistance from them. To maintain patients’
safety, it is the responsibility of leaders to manage resistance of change effectively (Pung &
Goh, 2016).
b) Sense of Humiliation: While leading the team, the head nurse may sometime feel the sense
of humiliation. In the process of leading new graduate nurses for maintaining social media
optimality for the protection of privacy of patients or the secrecy of the hospital, new nurses
may sometime ignore the suggestions of the leader or they might oppose the decisions of
the leader, hence in this way sense of humiliation can be felt by the leader (Henderson,
Barker, & Mak, 2016).
c) Managing Personal Goals of Employees: To lead a bunch of new graduate nurses towards
the accomplishment of hospital goals, the leader might sometimes face conflicts, challenges
against the alignment of personal goals of each nurse with the organisational goals. This
further creates dissatisfaction among new nurses which might hamper the safety of patients.
To maintain the patients’ safety and the goodwill of the hospitality unit, leaders need to
align effectively the personal goals of those nurses with the goals and objectives of the
hospital (Delaney, 2018).
d) Protection of Patients’ Privacy: The privacy of patients is considered one of the crucial
responsibilities of a hospitality unit. This is taken care of by each staff of that unit. To

are sharing or visiting, etc. There are other parameters also, however in this digitally
changed era the main emphasis is given on by leaders on marinating the privacy and safety
of their patients from digital threats or social media (Northouse, 2015).
Strategies to Deal with Challenges
While leading the team of new graduate nurses, leaders usually face some challenges, hence
in this section; the strategies that can be adopted by leader nurses to deal with specified challenges
are discussed effectively:
a) Pre and Post Training Review: The review of training needs before and after the process
of training can help the head nurse as the leader to understand the capability of new
graduate nurses and the problems they might be facing. This can help leader in
understanding and reducing the resistance from the side of nurses as well as the challenge of
protecting privacy of patients’ can also be maintained where the new graduate nurses can be
trained in such a manner that they can use their social media accounts according to the code
of conduct of the hospital as well as specified in the guidelines of AHPRA.
b) The building of Firm Phrase or establishing authority: The challenge of the leader being
felt humiliated by the doings of nurses can be overcome. It can be overcome or reduced
with the help of two ways one is to build a firm phrase, which meant that the leader must
deal with the situation firmly. In this manner, new graduate nurses might get embarrassed
and may apologize for their behavior from the leader (Boyal & Hewison, 2016). On the
other hand, when the firm phrase might not work than at that time the leader has to use
harsh methods where the dignity of the leader has to be established by the right or authority
it has over others or and on the functions of the hospital. The healthy relations among new
graduate nurses and leader leads to satisfying the needs of patients in an effective manner
which leads to their safety and security.
c) Monitoring and control over social media conduct: The role of new graduate nurses in
maintains and using their social media accounts can affect the overall image of the
hospitality unit. It can be possible when the personal information of the patients’, the
confidentiality of the hospital is compromised by the nurses on social media (Wijaya &
Damayanti, 2018). To control this, the code of conduct is maintained by the hospital as well
as the guidelines provided by AHPRA & National Board must be implemented in the

IMPROVEMENT OF PATIENTS’ SAFETY
There are multiple roles, which are played by a leader to bring the best out of their
employees. In hospitality units as well the leaders are continuously working for the betterment of
their patients as well as employees. The analyzed document in this study is all about measures that
a new graduate nurse or any other nurse needed to take while using social media, which can be
related to the privacy and confidentiality of their patients or of the hospitality unit. To do this and
lead new graduate nurses, the head nurse might face some challenges from which some of them are
discussed in this study. The strategies that might be adopted by the leader of nurses to overcome
those challenges are also discussed effectively. It is expected by the leader as well as new graduate
nurses to consider the privacy and safety of their patients while using social media and at the
hospital.
