The paper intends to go through several formal and content analyses through the
artwork that have been selected earlier. The Cooking Show by Paul McCarthy is the chosen
piece that will be analyzed scrutinizing each elements present in it. At first the paper will find

Formal elements
Composition:
The picture is repetitive and scattered with different equipments like knife,
syringe, cigar and the strangest thing about the picture is that every picture contains
essence of another picture. The man who is supposedly cooking is shown to be
carrying another man lighting another cigar inside his head.
Materials:
The use of charcoal and graphite is clearly visible on the paper and there are
some strokes of oil painting directly on the white background.
Stylistic characteristics:
The picture without having any doubt is representational, surrealistic and abstract.

emphasis on certain places.
5. There is no color scheme apart from black and white. The repetitive motifs are so
uncanny that it attracts the attention of the spectators. The patterns are not usual and
circular motion and straight lines and simultaneous curves are used.
Analysis (content)
1. It has away more complicated subject matter than it usually looks. The picture is
exactly like the way life is unpredictable and unfathomable to any individual. The
haphazard lines are expressive of the astonishments and bafflements that surround a
human existence (Ayobi). The unending and undecipherable opinions are suppressed
under the domain of thousands of more existences. Therefore, the subject matter is
more grotesque and deep than it appears.
2. The first symbolism is caught in the stare of the figure whose expression says that he
longs to get something intense however the seed of contradiction is overtly
encouraged to show his reluctant and indifferent attitude. There is a constant use of
contradiction in every aspect of the picture (Zebracki 451). The cigar is the metaphor
of the condemnation that one confers upon himself to fight against his will to survive
in the conventional arc of the society. The picture itself is a metaphor to critique the
severe and toxic effects of masculinity.
3. The social context is quite prominent in the picture where the society is mocked for
the struggle that an individual has to go through to survive in it. The deprivation and

the filth of political turmoil, leading to disappointment and despair are clearly visible
in the picture. The collected grief and frustration for a being a part of an
unprogressive society makes it a politically justifiable picture.
