INTRODUCTION
Human resource management is basically a strategic process of recruiting and selecting the best
candidate for the appropriate job and on the basis of their capability and skills HRM functions
works. The motive of every organisation is to properly deals with their operations structure and
that will be possible through the workforce and manpower of the industry or organisation in
functioning as a marketer. (Jackson, 2020).The below report is based on the company is Tesco ,
multinational retailing industry deals in general merchandise and groceries having headquarter in
Welwyn garden city, England, report is on the topic understanding of the knowledge, skills and
behaviours to be an effective people manager ,HR process which indicates the performance of
people at work.
MAIN BODY
Contemporary issues face line management faces when it comes to the people management
Contemporary issues refers to those issues which are current or present situation arises in the
industry when any issues created in respect of the peoples working in the industry this will leads
to the number of contemporary issue or problem .(Aswal, 2020).While working people
management has to be take care by their line management with proper policies and terms of the
industry for a particular situation .In the context of Tesco some of the issue face by the
management while manages the people in an industry is that :
Covid Situation:- Every organization is affected by the impact of Covid situation which
led to a major loss. Line managers faced various issues like mental health of employees,
lack of agility, employee communication and so on. In terms of TESCO, their managers
also faced such issues. Due to covid pandemic, company had to change lot of things in
their plans. The line managers team had to deal with fast changing environment. The
mental health of employees also got affected due to which company workplace was not
been effective.
Role of line manager:- A line manager is responsible for many thing like managing
employees as well as managing resources. They provide training to new hired employees,
give feedback to all team members according to their performance. Line managers also
face some of the contemporary issues in relation to people management. There are
different issues that managers face like changes being done in management, leadership

development, training and development of employees compensation and so on. In context
with changes being done in management, the business leads to growth so as their
strategies which becomes difficult for managers to deal with those changes which lead to
decrease in their productivity level. Leadership development also becomes an issue for
line managers as various leadership development programs are generated due to which
their performance also gets affected. While giving to training to all employees, it
becomes difficult for line managers to give training to low level employees and develop
them. In terms of TESCO, their managers also faced difficulty while dealing with
changes in their leadership as well as giving training to their employees.
Distancing at work and wearing mask :- During Covid pandemic every organization
faced an issue in wearing mask and physical distancing at work. The company face such
issue if there is not a clear policy of wearing mask because many employees don't like to
wear mask while doing work so due to this many conflict arise in organization. In context
with physical distancing of work, it becomes difficult for managers to provide training to
employees, communicating with employees. In terms of TESCO, they also faced issue in
dealing with all employees as well as customers while wearing masks and physical
distancing of work but they managed it well by not allowing any person in store who is
without the mask and all employees helped in dealing with those circumstances.
Brexit:- Due to arrival of Brexit, line managers also faced many issues like arrangements
in trading, different migration rules, labour issues and so on. In context with TESCO,
they faced problem in terms of customer confidence as well as value of sterling. As goods
which are imported became more expensive and there was a major drop in pound.
Knowledge skills and behaviours needed to be effective for people manager
People management refers to the managing of employees and people working in the
industry with a view to manage the conflict and misunderstanding related to the organisation to
build strong relationship with the people working in the organisation should be depends upon the
skill s , experiences ,knowledge and ability of a manager by this approach they can easily defines
the effectiveness of the industry through providing the growth according ta a context of people
management this will increase the motivation and balancing in the work environment which will
benefit the organisation in achieving the future goals and objectives .

Management and leadership styles :- To be an effective person manager management
as well as leadership style are important. Management style refers to ways which a
manager uses while managing whole organization or people. Leadership style means the
behaviour of person while leading a group. There are different management styles like
autocratic style, coaching, democratic, being a servant or laissez faire. There are different
leadership styles like authoritarian, participative, transactional and transformational type
of leadership. In terms of TESCO, they follow democratic type of management style in
which whatever employees say they are being heard during the process of decision
making. Due to which all employees feel motivated and they perform effectively while
providing services to consumers. The leadership style which TESCO, follows is
transformational leadership in which they motivate and inspire employees to develop
change in the organization and effectively work as a team.
Better communication :-If a manager in the organisation work according to the
interactive approach by utilizing their skills and make a quality communication with their
employees will allow the organisation in better effectiveness of the work targets and
goals . This functions works on the principle of providing growth to the organisation by
making effective communication through providing relevant and specific information to
the employees in respect of their work assign by which targets will be achieved
effectively so to built the communication manger will try to focus on the people
management by interaction and monitor.(Armstrong, 2019). For example: In the context
of Tesco if the manager will provide the relevant and specific information to the leaders
for particular target then work will be completed in more effective way by which all the
employees will effectively work according to their leaders .
Time management:- To be an effective person manager proper time management
should be there. Time management means planning and balancing time according to
various activities. If there is effective time management then it will be easy for managers
to deal with all challenges. In case of TESCO, they improved their productivity because
they balanced all their activities effectively through proper time management.
Prioritising and Delegating : These two factors are very important for organization to
become a effective company. Prioritising tasks includes many things according to which
manager do their work and it involves collection of all list of tasks, determining which

tasks are urgent and which are not, analysing the value of those specific tasks and be
flexible. Delegating tasks means assigning responsibility to other members at the
workplace which lead to high strategic planning and saves time as well as energy. In
terms of TESCO, they also prioritise their tasks as well as delegated their tasks. They put
their tasks in the correct order and performed effectively as well as according to their role
they gave certain responsibility to other people also.
What HR process underpin and support management to effective performance management:
A performance management is a process of method or tool which are used by the corporates
industry to evaluate and monitor the performance of the employees on the basis of their results
and input in the organisation this will be the main function of managers and leader is to deal with
the people management through monitoring and evaluating them by proper implementation.
(Oishi, 2020).
Recruitment and Selection :-Recruitment and selection are important function of human
resource management and for better organizational performance. If an organization will
select wrong candidate for their organization then it will affect their performance. It is
important for organization to recruit quality level employees which will create a positive
satisfaction within the organization. The performance of organization is directly linked
with people working in the organization. There is a effective relationship between all
three aspects; recruitment, selection and organizational performance. When appropriate
selection is done for an organization, performance as well as productivity increases and
lead to a profitable organization. In terms of TESCO, they did proper recruitment and
selection which led to effective organizational performance. The company used
workforce planning through which they had a clear job description and each employee
was clear regarding their job role and their responsibilities.
Flexible working :- In an organization flexible working is very important because it
leads to effective organizational performance. Flexibility in an organization is in terms of
many elements like in working hours, staff flexibility, flexible office, flexibility in terms
of productivity. To increase productivity, competitiveness and effective performance
management, flexible working hours must be there as employees should have the
freedom of choosing right place as well as right time to work to maintain their
productivity and organizational performance. There must be effective and flexible

working relationship with employees so that it lead to effective organizational
performance. In terms of TESCO, they had flexible working hours in their organization
like a fixed shift pattern, job sharing with colleague, work from home and so on. Due to
this their organizational performance got effective.
Performance management:- To maintain effective organizational performance, certain
strategies should be made by organization in performance management. The strategies
which must be made by organization are defining and communicating company goals and
performance objectives, usage of effective performance management software, providing
fast feedback of performance, using reviews and discussing about results being achieved.
In terms of TESCO, they also analysed their steering wheel in accordance with strategic
objectives and led to various strategies through which they can implement a effective
performance management.
Training and development:- A effective training and development is necessary for
effective organizational performance. For effective training there is a planned activity and
both individual as well as organizational goals are achieved. By effective training,
development of employees are done. In terms of TESCO, their main aim is to enhance all
requirements of people at right period of time. Investment being done by providing
training to employees leads to effective organizational performance.
Recommendations:
From the above analysis we recommended that by making the use of proper HR polices and
effective decision making of the manager for their employees by specific decisions from the
manager will decides the effectiveness of the organisation in a part of its operations value .We
can say that by properly using the tools in respect of managing and monitoring the employees
work is that performance management framework will decides about the future actions and
benefits for both the employees and organisation in respect of the industry.(Thombs and Osborn,
2019). It is recommended that an organization may face certain contemporary issues so to deal
with them line managers should properly perform their role as well as their responsibilities. In an
organization time management as well as effective communication should be there so that all
tasks are performed effectively in organization.

CONCLUSION
From the above report its concluded that people management is an important aspect for any
business organisation by building the strong relation with the people in respect of their working
workforce manage will enhance the effectiveness of the organisation. This study help in knowing
about the contemporary issues that management can face while working on the people
management ,by motivating them and provides them proper training and development program
for the employees will leads to the generation of growth in the organisation .it also involves
skills , knowledge and behaviour of an manager while working on people management.
