1VISION AND STRATEGY OF SUCESSFUL ORGANIZATION
Organizations visions acts as a road map for the organization, showing where the
company sees itself in the future. A strategy means the way the organization wants to achieve
its goals and objectives. Indra Nooyi led PepsiCo, which is known for its strong strategic
plans and culture (Rothaermel, 2015). She gave a strategic redirection to the company, which
made the company successful. The study focuses on Indra Nooyi’s organizational vision,
strategies and the way she restructured the company.
Indra Nooyi’s vision for PepsiCo’s was to provide “performance with purpose”, that
is based on two pillars- dealing with obesity and thus providing low-calorie, low-sugar
health drinks and food. PepsiCo ensured this by acquiring Quaker oats that showed their
concern for healthy foods (Buckup & Casas i Klett, 2018). The second pillar of PepsiCo’s
vision is to reduce the negative impact on the environment and for this, the company is trying
to reduce the use of plastic used in its bottles and find some environmental friendly solutions
for packaging. She aims at providing sustainability for the company by reducing
environmental impacts (Gabriel, 2017). Nooyi’s strategy for PepsiCo was to adopt the tricon
divestiture strategy, which included companies like pizza hut and others to increase its sales.
This spinoff strategy helped the company increase its market share. Acquisition of Tropicana
and merger with Quaker oats was considered as a powerful strategy of Indra Nooyi because it
helped PepsiCo diversify from carbonated drinks to healthy drinks and food. Nooyi used her
legitimate power to influence the organizations people and help them move in the direction of
the company’s vision. She held two positions in the organization- that of CEO and
chairwoman of PepsiCo and these positions gave her the legitimate power. When Nooyi
decided to take the company in a new direction her people trusted her due to the legitimate
power she holds. Besides this, Nooyi decided to have a collaborative approach for in
restructuring the organization (Singh & Useem, 2016). She took the feedback of all the team
members and then depending upon the feedback that she got she decided to restructure the

organization. This strategy of Indra nooyi not just helped to move PepsiCo in a new direction
but also to helped the people feel motivated towards the idea because they felt that engaged
as the CEO and the chairwoman of the company was asking for their feedback. She changed
the culture from a decentralized company to a top-down approach where the work will be
more formal and organized. However, she also created a culture where everyone can freely
share their views. Thus she created a structure of recognition and diversity (Maldonado, Vera
& Ramos, 2018).The main problem that Indra Nooyi faces is that of overstocking- due to
which the capital is becoming blocked. She needs to improve her strategy for to overcome the
problem of over-stocking.
From the above discussion it can be concluded that, Indra Nooyis vision for PepsiCo
and strategies adopted by her- restructuring , spinoff, acquisition and mergers have all helped
the company reach its present position. She had been able to align the people with the
organizations objectives through her legitimate power. People in the organization feel
engaged because of Indra Nooyi’s collaborative approach.
