1PERSONAL PERCEPTION PAPER
This paper mainly focuses in describing my personal opinion of making policies in the
criminal justice system. While discussing the same, I will describe the following vital matters
involved in policy making, such as, concept of policy making, policy analysis, role of inquiries
in criminal justice policy making, comparison between the perception of criminal justice policy
making and policy analysis. Finally, this paper also gives examples of two to three criminal
justice policies. No research will be needed for describing the first two concepts because the
responses will be my personal perception. Nevertheless, research will be important to answer the
remaining questions.
According to me policy making is not a very easy thing because this system includes
certain principles, which helps the others to take decisions and attain balanced consequences.
Therefore, the principles need to very precise and rational. Not only that, when the question of
policy making arises in criminal justice system you need to establish the existing policies to
establish a novel one. An individual cannot make new policies according to his/her wish.
Therefore, policy analysis also take an active part in this regard. For analyzing something
observation and study is vital. Before making the policies, that detailed analysis needs to be done
along with the analysis of new policies which might be executed. Thus, according to my point of
view, policy making is the formation of new guidelines in criminal justice whereas, policy
analysis includes the study of existing and novel policies.
For making criminal justice polices research is important in order to deliver assessment
and examination of crime and deliver approaches to reduce it. The books on criminal justice,
reviews, books and journals on criminology are complete with researches and policy analysis.
Nevertheless, among these various issues one issue does not get higher priority, such as , how the
agencies of criminal justice policy planning use criminal justice inquiries in developing

programs and making polices. An agency of criminal justice policy planning is maintained by
each states in order to receive federal financing. These funds are reviewed by the judiciary, non-
profit organizations, law enforcement agencies both state and local and corrections through these
agencies of criminal justice planning system in order to support the initiatives of criminal justice
(Roberts, 2018). Scholars in criminal justice can make their research more pertinent to policy
makers in criminal justice by recognizing the complexities of politics, authority and policy
changing aspects that control how these organizations function.
The three instances of the criminal justice polices are, namely:
 The Anti-Drug Abuse Act, 1986 which promulgated compulsory minimum drug
possession penalties;
 The Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Act, 2009 and
 The Sex Offender Act, 1994, that increased criminal penalties for different Federal fraud
laws, inclusive of mortgage fraud, securities fraud, product fraud, and financial institution
fraud.
As per the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the word ‘policy’ is described as ‘practicality or
understanding in business management’ and ‘a certain course or technique of action chosen from
amongst alternatives and given circumstances to direct and decide current and future decisions’.
Policies are used in governments and organizations to promote and control practice, as well as to
direct decision-making and to assist with the implementation of a policy (Andrews & Bonta,
2010). This procedure can be divided into six states, such as issue recognition, policy criteria,
strategy creation, policy approval, policy execution, and policy evaluation. There has to be an
existing issue before a strategy can even be created. There has to be an existing issue before a
solution can even be created. Disputes can be raised by anyone, such as from people, media,

advocacy groups and politicians alike. Problems may involve in rising crime rates, treatment in
jails to living in a population with registered sex offenders (Brown, (2012). My personal
perception regarding policy making has not been too far but I could have widened my views
because policy making has basically to do with any and all issues related to criminal justice. I
always figured that was primarily about the rules for the general public.
Policy analysis concentrates on how things are done, why things are done and
who ensures that things are done (Stolz, 2002). It consists of trying to figure out how criminal
justice policies have been implemented. I believe that my personal is not completely perfect. I
figured it was the reading of a proposal which is not wrong completely buy I just had to add a
little bit of context.
For this article, I was capable to describe both policy-making and policy analysis
from my own viewpoint. I was also capable in explaining the role played by the scholars in the
policy making of criminal justice. I also gave three examples of laws regulating criminal justice.
Finally, I contrasted my understanding of policy making and policy analysis with that which was
read and witnessed in the readings.
