AI Summary
This project delves into the performance analysis of Compression Ignition (CI) engines utilizing biodiesel as an alternative fuel source. The study highlights biodiesel's potential as a biodegradable and renewable energy source, addressing the increasing concerns of fossil fuel depletion and harmful greenhouse gas emissions. The research emphasizes the importance of biodiesel due to its calorific value, which is comparable to diesel, and its environmentally friendly nature. The analysis covers the advantages of biodiesel, such as its higher ignition temperature, excellent lubricity, and compatibility with existing diesel engines. The project discusses the significance of biodiesel in the context of global efforts toward energy security and climate change, advocating for its adoption as a key component of sustainable energy strategies. Furthermore, the project acknowledges the growing demand for alternative fuels and the need for stricter emission standards, underscoring biodiesel's bright future due to its biodegradable nature and reduced exhaust emissions.

The high flash point of biodiesel makes it possible to use it as an alternate of diesel in
Compression Ignition engines. Biodiesel is a biodegradable and non-conventional fuel which can
be used in diesel engines. Biodiesel basically is vegetable or animal fat based oil having alkyl
esters. There are many oil sources that can be used to produce biodiesel such as vegetable oils,
sunflower oil, brown grease, fish oil and many other sources. Biodiesel can be used directly into
the diesel engines or can even be used by blending it with diesel oil.
Energy is the important driver of this world mainly the industrial world. The most common
source of energy used is fossil fuels. With the increasing industrial development the demand for
fossil fuels such as coal, petroleum and diesel is also increasing which is a not a good thing for
our environment. The rampant burning of fossil fuels is not only depleting our natural resources
but also releasing harmful greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide which is leading to global
warming. It has been estimated that our coal reserves will last about 200 years, oil about 40 to 50
years. In order to issue stricter emission standards, in 1997 Kyoto Protocol was signed by 30
countries. As a result automobile manufacturers are looking for new alternatives of fossils to
reduce emission of harmful gases. It has been found that if the carbon dioxide emission is not
checked then it will lead to an increase in the surface temperature of the earth which is not good
for human existence. As Co2 emission is directly linked to burning of fossils it is very essential
to look forward towards environment protection rather than degradation.
Biodiesel is the best alternate to diesel as it has a calorific value close to that of diesel and a
certain number higher than that of diesel. The best thing about biodiesel is that it is obtained
from biodegradable and renewable sources, it does not pollute the environment with harmful
emissions. Since it has a higher ignition temperature it safe to handle and transport. It can be
easily pumped stored and used like common diesel oil. In the diesel engines and CI engines the
injection system basically dependent on the fuel for lubrication, if diesel does not provide
enough lubrication then the injection system tends to fail but biodiesel provides excellent
lubricity to the system.
As the carbon dioxide levels in the environment are increasing rapidly the future scope of
alternative energy sources such as biodiesel is very bright due to it biodegradable nature and less
exhaust emissions. With rapid industrialization it is quite obvious that the demand of fossil fuels
will keep on increasing and a day will come when we might not have enough fuel to meet our

demand so it is important that we begin using an alternate source such as biodiesel. Moreover
governments across the globe are debating on the issues of energy security and climate change
which gives a lot of significance to biodiesel.
