Definition and explanation of term performance management
Performance management can be defined as an ongoing process of communication
between employees and their supervisors (DeNisi and Murphy, 2017). It is an ongoing process
that occurs throughout the year so that main strategic objectives of organization can be achieved
successfully and overall performance of employees can also be maintained in a proper manner. It
not only helps in management of performance of employees but it also manages overall
performance of organization and manages all kinds of operational task in an appropriate manner.
Explanation of following approaches to performance management
Paired Comparison (a comparative approach)
In this approach, all the employees are compared with other employees on one on one
basis mostly on the basis of traits. As the name indicate in this pair wise comparison is done.
This approach is mostly used when there is a requirement of comparing work or job of two
employees whose work is completely different from one another so that hierarchy of preference
or difficulty can be defined. This comparison is done on the basis of time required for task
completion, skills required, knowledge and many more.
Behaviourally Anchored Rating Scale (BARS)
It is a performance management approach that has been designed in such a manner so
that benefits of both qualitative and quantitative data can be considered to employee’s appraisal
process (Silva and et.al., 2017). This helps the organizations in evaluating overall performance of
employees on the basis of good, poor or moderate performance. In this performance appraisal of
employees is done on the basis of five criteria’s that are: ways in which critical incidents related
to job are described, developing performance dimension of each cluster. Ways in which critical
incidents are reallocated, scaling incidents and lastly on the basis of these factors lastly develop a
final BARS instrument.
Developmental Approach
It is one of the most appropriate and relatable approach that can be related to employees. It
further helps in looking forward to use of goal settings (Silva and et.al., 2017). This approach
focuses upon using performance appraisal for motivating employees, human resource planning
and development. It helps in showing organizational interest in employee development so that
company can retain capable employees instead of losing them.

All the three approaches have their own advantages and disadvantages.
Paired Comparison: it helps the managers in setting priorities, conflicts in a proper manner. With
the help of this method Hamley can main high performance of employees and can reduce
chances of discrimination or any kind of partiality among employees.
BARS: this method completely focuses upon employee performance. It focuses upon evaluating
overall behaviour of employees. It can help Hamley to maintain positive working behaviour of
employees so that they can focus upon achieving defined target.
Developmental approach: it helps in setting and maintaining work standards and provide
feedback to employees so that they can motivate themselves in order to enhance their overall
performance. This approach will help Hamley to retain their capable and efficient employees
which will further help them in maintaining high performance culture and capable employees
will remain committed to the organization.
