MANAGEMENT
Performance management is the continuous process of identifying, measuring, and developing
both performances of individuals and teams. This unit has been an eye opener, it has made me
be able to have a different perspective on performance and as such I can now apply this
knowledge to on my academic performance. This unit has also enable me to understand how to
me carefully choose a measuring approach on my academic performance which is a very
essential aspect in performance management. According chapter four, defining performance and
choosing a measurement approach, performance is defined by employee’s behavior and what
they do (Donker et al, 2014). Performance is not measured by results or outcomes but rather
what employees do and produce. This has enabled me understand that in order to have grasp of
my academic performance I need do not need to focus on my results and grades but rather what I
do every day and the studying the studying techniques that I employ. Some of the daily activities
that I can focus on to improve my academic performance comprise of discovering and
understanding my learning style, revising, managing my time properly and always staying
motivated. Through undertaking all these activities on a daily basis is can be very significant in
improving my academic performance. It is therefore conclusive that aspects outlined in topic
four of this unit have made have a different approach on my performance, as I now try to focus
on what I do every day rather than on my final results and grades.
Secondly, this unit has enabled me to master the art of setting goals which is a very critical
aspect in improving performance. The topic of strategic planning for instance has enabled me to
understand the need of having a plan and setting goals and proper allocation of resources to
improve academic performance. Just like in strategic planning I have learnt I need to goals and
use a broader range of reading resources. Though the setting of goals, one can easily track their
progress and adjust accordingly in areas that need improvements or changes (Elias, White,

Stepney, 2014). Through the setting of goals, I tend to be in control of my academic progress.
Apart from this, setting goals enables students to plan their time more effectively and, in that
way, quantify their progress with much ease. Using a more comprehensive range of reading
resources is also very critical towards improving one's performance in school. Using a more
extensive range of reading resources is significant because it enables students to gain different
contexts and perspectives, which enhances a better understanding of concepts being addressed in
class. Besides, it also makes learning more enjoyable. Evidence shows that there are two ways of
memorizing information; variation and repetition (García-Sanpedro, 2012). While the latter is
effective, it is too tedious. Variation, on the other hand, is not only effective but also makes the
learning process more enjoyable as it employs more student engagement. Studies show that
students learn better when they are actively engaged. As such it is clear that strategic planning
has enabled me set goals and use a wide range of resources to improve on my academic
performance.
