Performance Management Principles
Performance Appraisal (PA) is one of the units we have covered in this course program. Human
resource managers use various PA tools such as Ranking Method, Checklist Method, Grading
Scale, and Forced Distribution Method among others to review employee’s performance and
overall contribution to an organization Ramous (Agyare, Mensah, Aidoo, & Ansah, 2016). At
my job of a student, there are various ways I can use these PA tools to boost my performance. I
can, for example, use the Grading Scale to compare my performance over a certain duration
using a scale (poor, average, good, very good, and excellent). From this scale, I can easily figure
out my performance trend and from there, make the necessary changes to enhance my overall
performance as a student. I can also prepare a checklist in the form of a sequence of questions
concerning myself and my behavior. I would then try to answer the questions in "yes" or "no"
and afterward evaluate my performance based on the way I respond to the checklist questions.
This can enable me to understand my strengths and weaknesses and as such the places I need to
work on attaining my educational goals. In a nutshell, I believe Performance Appraisal as a
course can assist me in seeing how my performance in school is essential in my future career
path and thus, increase my morale to work harder.
The Performance Management principles learned in this course are vital for improving my
academic performance. Performance, in this case, refers to the extent to which I would like to
attain my long and short term learning goals through the use of Performance Management
principles. First, I will keep the entire process as simple as possible (Kallio, Kallio, Tienari, &
Hyvönen, 2016). I will keep the emphasis on improvement and attainment, and keep the
paperwork we are doing in class simple. Besides, I will make my academic goals challenging,
engaging, and interesting. This, as Cappelli, & Tavis, (2016), points out will really motivate me

to achieve my learning goals. By making my goals challenging yet interesting, I will develop
great morale and stay focused on what I need to achieve in my academics. I will also build on my
strengths more than correcting my weaknesses. Of course, I acknowledge my weaknesses but if I
focus on them more than on my strengths, I will achieve little since I might be disappointed. I
believe that I am not good at everything that is encompassed in my career but I am certain if I
will lay more emphasis on what I am good at, I will attain a lot in my education. I am also
purposing to get the right tools that I need to achieve my learning goals. I want to make sure that
all the resources that I need to succeed are in place to assist me to run the course and demonstrate
performance improvement (Langabeer, 2018).
