Every course undertaken by a student presents them with a unique opportunity to learn.
Key lessons may be those focused on helping a student cope with day to day life or those focused
on helping them to transition into successfully into their future workplace. Performance appraisal
is one of the key lessons I learnt in this unit. I am certain that the various tools learnt under
performance appraisal will be of significant use in both my school life and my future
organization setting.
Performance in school context refers to the extent of attainment of short-term ns long-
term educational and learning goals. The performance of a student in school is determined by
several factors including their study habits, relationship with students and teachers, and the
ability of the teacher, interests, skills, motivation, personality and intellectual capacity (Farooq,
Chaudhry, Shafiq, & Berhanu, 2011). This means that for a student to achieve academic
performance goals some of these factors must be aligned towards that objective. Learning refers
to the process of acquiring new skills or knowledge by being taught or through personal
experience. On the other hand, study habits refers to the set of behaviors adopted during the
process of learning academic materials or in the course of preparing for assessments (Farooq,
Chaudhry, Shafiq & Berhanu, 2011). Study habits can be categorized as appropriate and
inappropriate. Finally, a grade refers to an average of all points earned by a student during a
particular period. The grade earned is largely determined by many of the factors identified in this
paragraph
In order to improve my performance, I will need to put into consideration the factors on
which the performance is based on to ensure a balance is achieved. I addition I will also develop

clear and realistic performance goals to enhance their attainability. To achieve this I will use a
couple of performance management techniques
To start with, one of the tools that I will use to improve my performance is Management
by Objective MBO).The tool entails the use of predetermined objectives to measure performance
(Phin, 2015). To effectively utilize this tool I will makes sure that I establish goals and desired
performance outcomes for each subject at the start of every semester. Secondly, I will also have
to set performance standards for each course. Thirdly I will compare the actual goals with the
targeted performance goals at the end of every semester access and note down the difference. For
the goals that will have been achieved at the end of the semester, I will establish new goals with
higher performance standards than the previous semester and keep working towards them. For
the targets that I will have failed to achieve, I will make use of alternative strategies in
subsequent semesters to makes sure that I also achieve them.
Additionally, I will also improve my performance through the use of 360-degree
feedback technique. The technique involves the use of feedback from multiple sources as a basis
for improving performance (Doherty & Brodsky, 2011).By using 360 feedback technique, I will
therefore assess my performance based on the feedback received from immediate peers, group
members self, family members and my professor. Feedback received will help me to make
necessary adjustments in order to improve my performance in school with regards to course
performance and performance in interpersonal-relationships.
