Introduction
Victoria was a newly recruited nurse. She had a great communication skill. After the few weeks
of her recruitment in the hospital are effective communication skills with patients increased the
recovery health of the orthopedics department. The effective communication skills of a Victoria
positively affected the health of the patients in the hospital. The above story reflects the
importance of the effective communication skills in providing person-centered care. The
following essay will be discussing the about the concepts of belongingness, communication,
resilience, and emotional intelligence. It will be then critically evaluating the importance of these
concepts to newly registered nurses in providing person-centered care to patients.
Becoming a registered nurse
Person centered care means the nurses making the patient’s needs, goals, and desires the center
point. The primary focus of the nurse is being careful about the individual’s personal needs and
desires and helping them recover based on the individual’s personal situations and medical
diagnosis ( Sherwood, 2017). In the approach, the nurse concern is to provide the nursing care to
the patient by taking in account the person’s needs, goals, preferences, and values and then
providing the treatment accordingly. There are various components which help the nurse in
application of this person-centered approach ( Sherwood, 2017). Those components include
awareness of the patient’s needs and values, taking care of emotional and physical comfort of the
patient, developing good relation with patients, increasing involvement of friends and families in
care giving, and allowing freedom of choice to patients. These qualities if practiced by the nurses
could result in the nurses following the person-centered approach.
The person-centered approach is different from patient centered approach. In patient centered
approach. less focus is given on personal needs of the patient and more on the medical diagnosis
provided by the doctors. It is a very formal approach, which is simply concerned with treating
the patient,’s medically while in the person-centered approach, the focus is given on the personal
needs of the patient. The medical diagnosis is also given the priority but the highest priority is
accorded to the satisfaction of wants and goals of the patient.
The person-centered approach has many benefits. The approach facilitates the fastest recovery of
the patient as it is concerned with the treating them through forging good emotional connections

with the patients. Other benefits include happier environment in hospitals as their personal needs
are taken care. The approach also facilitates good coordination between the hospital staff as the
attitude of the nurse towards patients makes the management humbler and accepting. The
approach is also beneficial from the point of view of the hospital as a corporation. The good
treatment to patient’s and its family members also result on the spread of the positive word of
mouth of the hospital thus improving its financial position in long run. Although the approach
has many benefits but there are various challenges for the nursing staff to implement the
approach. As it becomes really challenging to understand the personal goals of the patients
(Towsley & Madden, 2015).
Emotional Intelligence
There are various concepts in the organizations which are helpful in the application of the
person-centered approach. Those concepts are of emotional intelligence, belongingness,
communication, and career resilience ( Oakley, 2017). The emotional intelligence concept is
about being emotionally aware of one’s emotions and controlling it to reach better patient’s
outcomes. The high emotional awareness of nurse results in high productivity, improved
patient’s recovery rate and good relations with the hospital staff. There are various odd situations
which arises in the nursing life where the nurse has to tame its emotions to produce the targeted
the level of performance. For example, a nurse has been provided four tasks of looking after the
patients with serious health concerns instead of getting overwhelmed, she has to control her
frustrated emotions and calmly has to tackle the tasks of managing them. The nurses with high
emotional intelligence can forge good relations with patients and the staff thus helping them
achieve good growth in career (Mayer, 2016).
Career Resilience
The other important concept is of career resilience. The word “Resilience” means being flexible
in the face of adversity or obstacles. The resilience is the most important factor in determining
the nurse’s career development. It is about managing the pressure in the most effective manner as
could. In the working environment, a nurse must tackle various personal issues which include
stereotypes, discrimination, and bullying, at the same time, it has to deliver its targets with
efficiency according to the defined approaches. Such kind of emotional pressure can only be
managed by the nurses having high resilience as they have to be flexible with the ever-increasing

demands at work-place. For Example, A nurse named Victoria had a personal call to attend an
important family event and at the same time, boss arrives to ask Victoria to attend a patient with
a serious medical condition within an hour in an emergency ward. It is on Victoria to manage the
situation with her innate resilience quality (Seibert, 2016).
Belongingness
The belongingness is another important concept. It is the feeling created by nurse with the
patients so that they are able to feel the sense of connection with the hospital ( Dunbar, 2017).
The belongingness helps in creating the feeling of satisfaction and connection in the patient.
They are able to connect themselves with the hospital. The high level of belongingness improves
the recovery rate of the patients (Verhagen & Baumeister, 2018).
Communication
Another important concept is communication. The communication opens doorway to connect
with the people. An effective communication helps in resolving the problems of the patients. In
communication, ascent and the words used to communicate to the patient matters a lot ( Miller,
2015). A soft ascent with kind words can resolve a lot of problem of a patient where as a blunt
ascent and unkind words could create problems. The effective communication helps achieving
the right results.
The concepts of belongingness, emotional intelligence, resilience, and communication is helpful
for the newly registered nurses to achieve person-centered care.
Assistance of Emotional intelligence concept in achieving person-centered approach
Emotional intelligence is the ability of the nurse to control her reactions towards a situation by
changing emotional response to it. According to Spano and Szekely the healthcare professionals
with the controlled emotional response are more likely to have good relations with patient
(Spano-Szekely, et al., 2016). Such concepts can be of high importance to newly graduated nurse
as it will help them achieve the person-centered approach to nursing.
As nursing is a profession which requires a high-level of emotional intelligence to serve the
demands of disabled individuals so management of emotions intelligently becomes essential for
newly registered nurse to work from the person-centered approach. The authors Faria and
Bernardes Lucas writes that a newly registered nurse who practices to be proactive in her

emotional response would more likely be in the position to handle the initial stress of the job
(Faria & Bernardes Lucas, 2019). The emotional breakdowns of nurses will be less. The person-
centered approach of nursing requires a high level of commitment, patience, and perseverance
from nurse because it is not easy to bring the individual who are either mentally or physically
bruised to a place of satisfaction. The nurses who can bring awareness to their emotional state,
when they are getting frustrated and turn their frustration to the state of calmness to deal with the
crisis’s situation can succeed. If the newly registered nurses’ practice to develop empathy
towards patients, develop awareness about their emotional states and practice self-regulation
when overwhelmed can be an effective implementer of the person-centered approach. The
concept of high emotional intelligence is highly beneficial for the newly registered nurse to surf
through the inevitable challenges that arise in the profession.
Assistance of Resilience concept in achieving person-centered approach
Resilience means the ability to withstand firmly in the times of crises and positively come out
from the stressful situation. Nursing is profession full of stress and every day’s anxieties to
manage contingences. The reasons for stress could be staffing issues, role conflicts, medication
errors and lack of coordination between the doctors and nursing staff. In a Manzano Garcia and
Ayala Calvo study it was found out emotional exhaustion can be controlled through the attitude
of resilience (García, 2014). The resilience can be developed through various qualities such as
Spirituality, Hope, optimism, self-efficacy, and competence.
In a person-centered approach to nursing, A nurse deals with the needs, goals and wants of the
real humans which are dynamic in nature. The authors McDonald & Wilkes states in the journal
that It is essential for the newly registered nurse to act from the position of resilience to deal with
dynamism of the human nature that will make them adaptable to the changing situations
(Mcdonald & Wilkes, 2016). The concept of resilience will develop patience, and perseverance
to deal with the patient’s wants and goals.
There are various situations which arise while dealing with patients. Most patients lose their cool
easily so it becomes essential for the newly registered nurse to develop empathy towards the
patient as the empathy will help nurse to understand clearly the situation from the point of view
the patient thus helping them develop the person-centered approach. The attitude of flexibility in
the face of crises if applied from the beginning by the newly registered nurse will help them to

Assistance of communication concept in achieving person-centered approach
Communication is a key aspect in maintaining a prolonged and successful relations. An effective
Communication is all about conveying the right messages in a right manner to the targeted
person. In a person-centered approach to nursing, an effective communication plays a big role in
building healthy connections with the patients. Healthy connections if forged will lead to
increased recovery rates of the patients. The authors Giménez‐Espert and Prado‐Gascó write that
Newly registered nurses should train themselves to develop an effective communication skill, as
it will be the first step in implementing person-centered approach in an organization (Giménez‐
Espert & Prado‐Gascó, 2018).
According to author Arnold ,the right kind of communication will be helpful in placating the
emotions of the patients and giving them positivity in fighting off their mental and physical
disability ( Arnold, 2019). An effective communication with the soft accent and kind words
could act as counseling to an already suffering individual thus enabling the qualities of person-
centered approach. For example, in the healthcare department many emergencies arise such as
there are patients who are afraid to undergo surgeries and do not listen to the prudent advice of
the doctors so the newly registered nurse can use the concept of effective speech to placate the
emotions of patients. An effective communication will give them motivation to go for surgeries.
Assistance of Belongingness concept in achieving person-centered approach
The sense of belongingness is an important concept in nursing. It is one of the most important
elements of person-centered care. According to the authors Borrott and Levett-Jones, the creation
of feelings of belongingness in the patient increases the patient’s connection with the hospital
and staff (Borrott & Levett-Jones, 2016). The concept of belongingness if practiced by newly
graduated nurse can lead to the creation of sense of connection in the hearts of the patients thus
making them feel that they are not in hospital but a place where their needs are cared for. These
feelings of care which are developed in the patients increases their recovery rate.

Conclusion
The person-centered approach is one of the best approaches to nursing as it takes care of the
needs of one of the most important stakeholders in the hospital. There are some concepts which
can help the newly graduated registered nurses for the easier implementation of the nursing
approach. The concepts are easier to practice and their implementation could lead to increased
satisfaction to patients in the hospitals.
