1PERSONAL COMPETENCY IN NURSING
From the very childhood I had an ambition to persue my career in the well-being of
people and the society. So, I always wanted to be a nurse because I wanted to serve and help
people who are facing health problems and bring a positive change in their lives. I have
chosen nursing as a profession mainly due to two reasons. Firstly, I have always had an
interest to hep and care for people and secondly, it is a financially rewarding, respectful and
secure carreer option where there are many opportunities and scope for the graduates to
progress in their career and develop their skills both in public and private hospitals and
medical clinics1.
Though the nursing profession is very challenging and demanding, and one has to be
very dedicated towards his duties and responsibilities still I feel it can be very satisfying also
to know that I am able to bring a positive transformation in people’s lives and enhance their
lifestyle.
I have excellent communication skills which I think will help me in engaging with
patients of all age and background, I possess good interpersonal skills which will help me in
communicationg through non-verbal cues and gestures with patients who face difficulty with
speech2. I have always been a very sociable person and prefer socializing with people.
Mentally, I am a strong and resilient person, and love to take challenges. I think the stress
situations helps to bring out the best in me. Through my past experience in a healthcare
setting, I have learned how to deal with stress and work pressure. My peers also said that I
had coped well with them in such situations. I always loved to work in teams, starting from
school or college assignments to working with my superiors in the healthcare settings,

collaboration and teamwork has always been my priority. I feel teamworks helps to bring the
associates together, creating a strong bond and unity among the workers and also ensure
better result. During my tenure in the healthcare setting, I have also observed how my senior
nurses dealt with patients, observed them and performed different test and made treatment
plans. This real life practical experience in the clinical gave me a new insight and
perspective, inspired me to take nursing as a future profession.
Coming to my skills, I possess good problem solving and time management abilities.
Thoughout my academic career I have learnt that a proper planning is essential to meet
deadlines. I have organized my schedule and priorities according to that, it has taught me to
prioritise the works that are urgent and keep the rests for later. This greatly enhance my time
management skills. I have also learnt how to deal with problems and solve it professionally,
by identifying the issue and analysis it critically. I am hardworking and enthusiastic person,
and passionate about my career in nusing. Also I am a good listener and have empathy for
others.
Regarding my computer skills, I am a tech savy person, I have always been interested
in the technological advancement and kept myself up to date. I am proficient in Microsoft
Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint3. In the clinical experience, I have also gained
hands on experience in running softwares and health care techonigies like Electronic Health
Care, Electronic Medical Record and so forth. I have learnt about documentation which
helped me in preparing patient health reports, planning appointment with doctors. In my
leisure time, I read the health maganizes and newspapers to keep myself informed with the
new and emerging global health care issues4.

Some years ago I had to visit at a hospital as one of my close family member was
admitted there owing to lung cancer. There I saw how the nurses used to take care of the
patients with compassion and empathy5. I saw how organized they were, and they used to
work in harmony with other nurses and staffs to ensure the well- being of the patients, taking
care of their needs and health demands. Also they were caring for their patients in a non-
judgemental and unbiased manner, giving equal respect to each patients. I feel this is a
quality every nurse should possess. From that moment, I acknowledged the impact of a nurse
in a person’s life, I was so inspired that I began researching about nursing from the very next
day. The professionalism and caring nature of the nurses towards the patient really
synchronized with my own professional goals and aspiration.
Now, I have chosen Charles Darwin University(CDU) to persue my nursing caree
because of the wide range of opportunities and scope this university offers to the aspirants to
establish a successful and prosperous academic career. It is a vibrantb and internationally
recognized university for academics and research6. Besides, after completing my graduation
in nursing from CDU, I will be eligible for Division 1 nurse in Australia. They provide both
offline and online course and also provides financial assistance to students. Regarding my
eligibility I have successfully qualified both NTCET and ATAR , and also carry a
certificateIV level national qualification along with my diploma or higher education degree.
My overall STAT multiple choice score is also quite good7. All these qualifications will help
me in pursuing a nursing career in the CDU and also guide me in fulfilling my ambition of
supporting and treating others in a healthcare environment.

I know persuing nursing in such a renowened university would be challenging for me,
the path will not be smooth, I will face many hurdles and difficulties along the way, however
I am ready to take up those challenges because I believe, challenges and problems are normal
in any profession, I will deal with those very professionally and confidently, and learn from
them. Moreover, I believe I have all the skills and abilities which are required to be eligible
for a nursing career in this university.
