INTRODUCTION
Personal and professional development are two most important concepts that are part of
each individual development. It is a process where a individual or a organisation is engaged in a
learning process so that they are able to meet their respective objectives according to specified
challenges (Davies, Curtin and Robson, 2017). Presently there is discussion of the basic
concepts of professional and personal development along with short term goals, medium term
goals and long term goals of a student in their university career.
Define the concept of personal and professional development
Personal development is regarded as activities that are focused on improvement of
identity and awareness of a individual. It is based on development of potential and talent to build
up human capital. It further facilitates employability in order to enhance the overall quality of
life so that a individual is able to successfully contribute towards achievement of aspirations and
dreams. For a student personal development can be based on self actualisation where a strident
can focus on achievement of their specific objectives (Beijaard and Meijer, 2017). A student can
use theories like maslow need hierarchy theory in order to identify the stage at which they are
present and then according to that focus on other high level needs.
Professional development:
Professional development is a great important for future perspective. In reference of wide
variety of specialization training programme and formal education in order to help in achieve a
competency skill and effectiveness (Misra, 2018). It also help in improving the professional
knowledge. When the term is used in education reference so it is important for students because
not learn single aspects it including multi purpose tasks. It is provide a various opportunity not
only for students but provides a teachers also in order to practical exposure and expand the
knowledge base of teaching workforce. In universities and schools launch a various programme
for teachers and students like induction programme, online training programme, guest lecture
and workshops arrange them so it is practical exposure and enhancing a creativity (Korthagen,
2017).

Those students and teachers are interested so universities organised a learning session in that
mainly focus on the assessment and the evaluation that occurs regularly in the classroom. It is
kind of session in which teacher and students both are participated and two way conversion. It is
also said a two way learning and interacting each other.
Personal goal examples for student perspective to be achieved:
Those students are school and college going so itself set a short- term goals so goal for
personal point of view like Keep a locker clean & organised and save the pocket money in that
way which is utilise in effective and efficient manner and studying perception on the basis of
homework should completed on time and measure the performance on daily basis.
Those students are college going so set a short-term goal on the basis of personal achievements
and career perspective (Donelan, 2016). For example, Choose accordingly friend circle and
outside comfort zone because they know how become successful in life. Finding mentor which
properly guide them for future perspective. On the basis of career, college going students set a
goal in that way for example, Build sense of responsibility, promote organisational skill,
Improves decision making skill, sets a clear path, provides an opportunity becoming successful,
increase the self-awareness and boost the confidence.
In context of student, There are various short-term goals which is achieved for future
perspective:
Short -terms goal matter lot in each and every life. Short- term goal is not only for
students but it is important for each individual who are professional, teacher, entrepreneurs and
mentor (Kennedy, 2016). It helps to determine the long term goal and leads to the success in the
life. In relevance of education, Student more focus on studies and career. In student life it is easy
to achieve the things because firstly plan short-term goals which is a accomplishes with simple
milestones, break down into daily goals and weekly goals. It includes a different kind of aspects
which follow as-:
ï‚· Focus on today not tomorrow.
ï‚· Learn mistakes from past but not repeated in future and always a ahead.

achieved within 2 weeks, a month or it could be in 6 months for a student of university. It stay
motivates people to completing their long term goal if they are meeting with their short term
goal. Purpose of goal setting is to get success in life and for achieving more and more in life. It
could be of any type like monetary or non monetary. For monetary medium term goal a student
need to save money from their pocket money. It is always sets by an individual for the benefits
of themselves. Medium term goal helps in improving carrier path for achieving growth and
development in carrier(Mahlaka, 2017). And every success begin by setting goal. For instance a
college student set so many goal within stipulated time in order to complete their assignment,
projects and tasks which is assigned to them. And that can be considered as medium term goal as
it can be done in short period of time. Similarly there are some examples of medium term goal
with respect to a university student that are described below:
ï‚· Graduate from college - While studying in college every student wish to graduate
college with excellent percentage so that they will become a success person in future life.
It can be done by proper time management of studied and other activities. It could be a
medium term goal for them as they can complete it during studies which takes 1-2 years.
From this they feel motivated and confidence for getting success and development in life
and will set their long term goal( Bernecker and Becker, 2020). It helps in performing
challenging projects during exams.
ï‚· Saving money- Every student who are pursuing in college get sufficient packet money
for operating their daily basis function. Now for giving gift to their friend they need to
save money from their pocket money and it can only be completed within 6 months. It is
related with the finance medium term goal.
ï‚· Fitness- Each and every students want to be fit during college time. It could be mentally
or physically. Mentally for performing good in exams and physically for looking smart.

By setting goal it is possible. For instance a student want to become physically fit then he
need to set medium term goal like he need to run over bridge for 7-8 km daily for loosing
10-15 kg weights. And it can be complete within 3-4 months. It only not improve
physical health but also improves mental health. Which gives benefits towards
performance. It helps trigger new behaviour, and helps to sustain that moment of life.

Long term goals of a student are those that are decided by a individual for a longer period of
time. It is developed according to planning and require large amount of time. They are usually
formed for several years (Zeer, and Streltsov, 2016). There is requirement of many different
types and it includes some shirt term goals to be completed in order to achieved laid long term
goals. These are very crucial from a career perspective. Long term goals are related to future job
requirements. It takes proper career planning to form some long term goals. According to each
student the type and level of long term goals vary and it can be same for two individuals but that
depends on co incidence or a similar mindset.

Some of examples of long term goals for a student are discussed below:ï‚· completion of bachelors degree in a time period of coming four years: It is one of the
most common objective of students where they are willing to develop according to their
maximum potential. This is changing according to a specific degree and subjects that are
selected by a student.ï‚· Learning a new language: For students who are willing to move to a different country
most have to focus on a long term goal of learning the language prevailing in that target
country.
ï‚· Attainment of a specific position in a dream organisation: student while studying in a
university are many times willing to work in some organisation where they have always
dreamt of. For this students can focus on specific development of skills according to s
such future dream job.
Above mentioned are some of the common long term goals that are part of life of every student
and has to be achieved in a long duration of time period as it requires continuous efforts and
hard-work.

life where a student can learn up to maximum of their existing capabilities. Personal
development plan is usually based on short term goals of organisation as long term are spread
