1. Introduction
Development at personal level is regarded as a lifelong procedure wherein the people
assess the skills; qualities and knowledge on one hand and on other hand consider the goals
of life and set the purpose so that the potential is enhanced. There are mainly three aspects of
the personal development which involves mental, spiritual and physical. It is very essential
for the individual to continuously develop its personal and professional abilities so that it can
become capable (Carter, 2020). This assignment shall cover the notion of personal and
professional development, different types of targets or goals and the importance of personal
development plan.
2. Definition of the concept of personal and professional
development
It is referred to as a route wherein the organization and a human being gets involved in
the process of learning so that the desired aims and challenges are met. The personal
development is generally associated with needs of development of the individual and group.
It is aimed to ensure that the people are able to manage their learning and growth in the
career. It is also important for them to learn and develop continuously new skills and
knowledge so that they can ensure that they work in a safer, legal and effective manner. The
personal and professional development not only provides advantage to the individual in its
professional career but is also aimed to provide such skills and knowledge which can help in
grabbing more career opportunities so that professional development is ensured and a healthy
lifestyle is leaded. It is one of the continuous processes which never ends as it comprises of
such activities which can help in development of personal capabilities and potential in whole
life (Peter, Charles and Sue, 2017).
3. Description and discussion of the value of short term goals

Objectives are the targets which a person wants to accomplish. Short term goals are
regarded as something that an individual requires to accomplish in the near future that may be
today or in the present year or month. These types of goals are achieved in a very short period
of time and it helps in accomplishing the aspirations of profession and contributes in making
the individual more capable and productive so that there is improvement in the job
satisfaction level. However to achieve the short term goals, it is essential to set them at an

initial level and then get committed in order to achieve it. The individual may set these goals
to turn out itself as more efficient and productive in short time span and establishing the short
term goals are mainly intended to support the success of lengthy term aspirations. It is said
that the more specific and actionable the list of goals are, there are more likelihood that they
are achieved on the timely basis. These are set for the time period of less than one year. The
importance of short term aspirations are discussed thereunder-
Mitigates procrastination- Whenever a clear aspiration is set with the actionable steps
which can help in achieving it, the procrastination is reduced and the person is more
motivated to continuously work even if it is tough to move forward.
Boost motivation- It is said that it is easier to set the short term aspirations as
compared to long term goals as these allow in realizing the results in an easier and
quicker manner. The small achievement motivates an individual to set more goals for
the future and also helps in building a momentum so that it can keep moving ahead.
Promotes career success-When an individual sets the goals regularly and achieves it,
it is regarded as one of the key to move ahead in the professional life. Without the
goals, the person may get distracted and engage in such activities that do not make
any progress in its life, so it is essential to set the short term goals so that the eye is
kept on the prize and it is encouraged to focus on achieving the long term aspirations
of the career by setting small goals (Azatian and et. al., 2020).
Provides clear direction- The number of short term aspirations is accomplished with
course of actions which contributes in giving the clear pathway so that an individual
may focus on its efforts. This mainly contributes in avoiding any time wastage on

aspirations but it is motivated by the accomplishment of small targets.

contribute in accomplishing the goals as it enhances the confidence of the individual

accomplish the final aim. It requires multiple steps in setting the short term goals so that the
long term aspirations are achieved with the help of it. These goals are something that takes
more efforts, planning and time and are regarded as the delayed result of the gratification of
years and months. Long term goals are set for three purposes which includes firstly the
career, then is financial and lastly the personal aspirations. These take the time period of
more than five years to accomplish it (Weideman, 2021). The value of long term aspirations
are illustrated thereunder-
Financial security- The long term aspirations are aimed to accomplish financial
constancy as it provides an understanding of the possible income during the career
development that ultimately aids in building the individual more informed and
smarter about its decision that relates to investments. By setting long term goals, an
individual gets the ability to save the money in a smarter manner for the future,
thereby ensuring its financial security.
Pays off for achievement of the short term targets- The main aim of these aspiration
is that it pays off for working and that is done by person to accomplish the short
targets in order to achieve the ultimate long term aspiration. It works as rewarding an
individual for the achievement of short term goals that was aimed for the career
development.
Self-improvement- Every goal that is set by an individual helps it to build its focus on
whatever it does. The long term goals are set with an aim to make regular

Development Plan
It is very essential for a person to develop its personality and professional career and to
develop these, it is important that a PDP is prepared. This is regarded as a procedure that
includes creating the plan of action which is created on planning, reflection, goal setting,
awareness and values for the personality development in relation to self-improvement,
education or relationship. It is the documented plan that mainly outlines the targets that is
present in that area, what changes are required to accomplish the goals and the skills that are
necessary to be improved in an area of the weakness. It involves usually a statement of the
person’s competencies, strength or aspirations together with the steps which are needed to
indicate as to how a plan might be realized. The importance or value of the personal
development plan is narrated below-
Review progress- By preparing the personal development plan, the person view its
own progress relating to the goals for which the plan is being created. It mainly helps
in mapping out successful future but requires regular and constant review, reflection
and the update so that the focus is kept on achieving it. It also helps in setting the
steps which are necessary in order to achieve the goals inculcated in personal
development plan.
Propel career from the position of the power- The end number of visions can be
increased by PDP and they offer the high level of clarity and confidence to the people
on living its existence of its own choice. By better analysis of itself, the individual has

to achieve the goals so this plan offers an insight for all the actions which are
necessary to be taken so that the goals are achieved. It also helps in collecting the
resources that are available for an individual so that it can address and overcome its

7.0 Conclusion
It is concluded from this report that the professional and personal development is
defined as a process by which an individual is engaged in the process of learning so that it
can overcome the challenges and weakness in order to achieve the desired goals. There are
mainly three types of targets which are distinct on the basis of time scale that is required to
accomplish it. These work as an essential part in the professional and personal development
of an individual as it mainly aspires an individual to develop such skills which are necessary
for the future career development. Further it is added that the personal development plan is
the action plan that is aimed to develop such knowledge and skills which can help in
achieving the different types of goals.
