Personal Reflection on My Literacy Skills
Personal or self-reflection is the process of examining yourself in order to discover who
exactly you are in terms of your likes, dislikes, behaviour, and habits that can be unveiled during
this assessment (Brantmeier, Vanderplank, and Strube 2012). You can these discoveries to your
advantage by improving your weaknesses and maximizing on your strength as a person. My
biggest concern is to use this course unit EEC1110 Literacy for education to enhance my personal
literacy competencies and then have an action plan for developing my literacy skills in an attempt
to become a better student and be successful in earning my bachelors in Educational studies. I
believe that self-assessment will be making a step forward in becoming successful in future.
I can proudly say that throughout my early school education life, my literacy classes really
inspired me so much that I could literally wish to take extra classes to grasp more phonological
awareness rooted between my ears. Learning to read and write for me was a walk in the park, I did
not see it as a head-on obligation but rather as a passion to become a transformed human being and
I cannot rule out the fact that I had quality teachers at my beck and call ready to give me a hand
when I needed their assistance. In addition, I got so much support from my parents at home and
sibling who were older than me. The overall help at that time provided a foundation for me to first
grasp the basics of reading and writing and since I enjoyed all this pampered support, I found
myself doing this beyond the four walls of the classroom and doing much more beyond what we
were taught in class. Even before joining this course, reading has been a part of me and take it as a
hobby, one that has grown over time to manifest itself in me as a habit that I cannot let go easily. I
have read a number of novels and books from “Think Big” to “Think and Grow Rich” just to
mention a few and the more I read the better I become. I cannot say am the fastest reader but I can

sure that I understand the text by just reading it once. Reading is the backbone of all other
knowledge to be absorbed and internalized by the leaner. The first step to a successful education is
learning how to read (Daniellemota, 2013). They say that when someone gets the facets to enjoy
reading, they will definitely find it easy to enjoy learning in general (Donham, 2010). However I
do not intend to stop. James Lewis once said, “Unless you try to do something beyond what you
have already mastered you will never grow”. With this quote in mind, I would like to continue
building on my reading skills by signing up to ReadWriteThink platform and apps that help

Alongside reading, there is writing, personally I get more pleasure from writing pieces than
reading. Writing is intimate, it allows me express my thoughts, emotions, study information and
organize my opinions and beliefs out there to the open of the world to interpret. Of course, without
writing, there would be no reason to read if I may say. They both come hand in hand, one cannot
survive without the other. Writing is the most passionate and enjoyable aspect for me throughout
the years. Writing is like magic that flows from the inside to the face of a piece of paper by
creating personal masterpieces that is only unique to you and you alone (GradesFixer, 2018). That’s
why everyone has his or her own style and technique that are so diverse from one individual to
another. Reading other writing of the same topic of classmates will seem different and similar at
the same time and this should be highly acknowledged and truly appreciated (Seth, 2014). Just like I
did with reading, writing too will not be left behind, I have to improve on my writing skills since
you can never get it right when it comes to grammar. I have joined the grammar group website to
help me enhance on my grammar such as spelling, vocabulary choices and so on. This will surely
help me improve my writing by noting down all the mistakes made so that I can avoid them in
future.

Overall, I can honestly say that am passionate about literacy, both writing and reading. I
love this because I enjoy writing and reading both at a personal level and this has been attributed
through practice but mainly because I view the literacy world as the foundation for education and
knowing yourself.
