1.1 APPROACHES TO SELF-MANAGEMENT LEARNING
Self-managed learning can be defined as the process of learning and development of skills
and knowledge on their own. In this process, the decisions are taken by the individual in
order to learn and develop the skills and knowledge. The decisions relate to the
development plan that helps in knowing the aim of the study, time is taken to develop the
skills and how to develop the skills. The development plan helps the individual in making a
proper strategy for the learning and growth of personal and professional skills. The
development of self-management learning is necessary for the staff of Travelodge as it helps
them in improving the skill and knowledge and contributes in the providing excellent
facilities to the customers (Eldredge et al., 2016).
There are many strategies and theories that can be used by the staff of Travelodge for the
self-management learning that will help in improving the performance of the staff in the

Kolb learning cycle, VARK learning cycle and Honey and Mumford learning cycle. Each model
follows different approaches for the development and growth of the skills and helps in

Kolb learning cycle is one of the most common and effectively used learning approaches.
The model contains four stages that are concrete experience, reflective observation,
abstract conceptualisation, and active experimentation. The concrete experience stage
relates to the experiences about the skills. Reflective observation relates to the reviewing
and analysing the experience. Abstract conceptualisation relates with analysing and
concluding the results of the experience and the final step that is active experimentation is
responsible for the planning and implementation of a new strategy for learning and
development of the skill on the basis of past experience (Kolb and Kolb, 2018).
HONEY AND MUMFORD LEARNING CYCLE
Honey and Mumford learning cycles are consisting of four sections that are activist, theorist,
reflector, and pragmatists. Activists are the individuals that learn from their own by using
making learning strategies. Theorists are the individual who uses theories for the learning
and development of the skills and knowledge. Reflectors take help of the past experience of
the others and then according to that make strategies for learning the skills. Pragmatists are
the individuals that learn from reality (Kotecha, 2019).
