INTRODUCTION
Personal and professional development refers to a way individual sets out their goals,
mission, strategies etc. with the aim of enhancing knowledge related to specific field (Wykes and
et. al., 2015). Culture is an important elements in the development related to health and social
care as it assist them in performing the work ethically. For this report, H&SC sector is taken for
considerations in which personal values will be explained by taking example of working with the
sector. Role of personal culture and how it affects users of services will be described by taking
functional example. Own skills and ability will be identified for development and then
development plan will be made accordingly.
TASK 1
1.1 Compare personal values and principles with the support while working in H&SC
Values refers to ideas and thoughts shared by the same community related to difference
between good and bad, ethics and non ethics etc. Values and principles assist individual to shape
their career according to their past knowledge and experience. I belong from Romania which has
neighbour countries like Bulgaria, Hungary, Moldova etc. and has Romanian culture from the
birth. Whole country has different type of people from various background but more than 85% of
the population comes from the Romania culture only which solely focuses on hierarchical
society. One of the important values which is possess from my culture is equality to all the
people and eradicate all the factors of discrimination so that everyone can live happily. They
prefers to use title and surname until and unless someone demands call them by their name.
People of Romania do not trust strangers people and prefers to stay in privacy in most of the
time. In context of health care, Romanian does not prefers to visit hospital due to trust issues
that's why conditions of the H&SC sector is negative in nature. Due to poor conditions of health
care, country suffers from diseases like lungs cancer, AIDS, underweight baby, problem related
with uterus etc.
So according to H&SC, worker should not discriminate the patients on the basis of age,
gender, sex etc. as it is unethical in the industry. All the patients arrives in the hospital should get
proper treatment by avoiding discrimination from mind (Stoddart and Evans, 2017). On the other
hand, other factor is equality to people. Whenever any individual comes for treatment then I
always considered them a patients instead of male, female, children etc as all are equal. Privacy

is all one of the factors which I luckily got from my Romanian culture. Details of every patients
is secured and I have no rights to share those details to third person as it is illegal and unethical
in the laws of HSC (Girotti, Park and Tekian, 2015). So it can be said that all those mentioned
values has helped me at the time of working by enhancing my motivation level to a certain level.
1.2 Personal culture influence role in supporting user of H&SC
Culture which every individual possess comes from the society where they are living and
their life time experience in that culture (Stewart, Jameson and Curtin, 2015). If culture possess
from the society is positive then it will create a favourable environment in the future by living in
other society or while working and vice versa. Romanian culture states that every citizen should
perform their roles and responsibilities by following the path of ethical as it will help them to
make the decision correctly while working resulting in better performance. For instance, as
abortion is legal in Romania but any girl comes who is under 16 for abortion then it wont take
time to reject that patients treatment as it is illegal according to laws and Romania culture. So
this time, culture makes a positive impact on supporting use of HSC.
As mentioned above, Romania culture says that person should never discriminate on the
basis of any aspects, it makes a favourable impact in my working career as I always put all my
potential while doing clinical practices so that high quality of services is provided to the needy
person. On the other hand, some culture elements make a negative impact on my working as
Romanian culture depicts that they prefers privacy and did not openly talk to the strangers due to
trust issues. So as a practitioner, I continuously have to meet random patients so I have faced
problem in the starting as I could not be able to properly communicate with the patients. But as
the time flows, I have adapted my behaviour according to the external environment and now I do
not have any problem in making rapport with the clients. Other example is confidentiality
information of patients, for instance client work is to explain every problem they are facing
regarding the problem as then only doctors would be able to make the most effective treatment
plan. Role of doctor is to make the information confidential or concealed in nature so that third
party won’t be able to take the advantage of it (Payne, 2015).
1.3 New development in personal values impact on working in H&SC
Any development in the HSC will have a positive as well as negative impact on the
working of practitioner as it has a direct connection with the performance of employees. As in
the recent past, local authorities has amended their Care Act which now states that its the

responsibility of social care services to provide every support to the person in need without
considering their eligibility to get a funds from government. So from now onwards, we cannot
deny any one to get a services from hospitals which means that doctors and nurses have to
enhanced their potential when working due to increase in number of clients on a daily basis. In
other development, UK government has amended their safety and quality act 2015 which speaks
that every hospitals should follow certain guidelines related to safety of patients while treatment
and quality of services to them only (Foster and et. al., 2017). If anyone found guilty for not
following it then they might face legal issues and punishment from the side of government. So
now our work is to continuously analyse and monitor the changes government is planning to do
and then align our activities with it so that high quality of services is provided to them (Health
and Social Care (Safety and Quality) Act 2015, 2019) Along with this, government is also
motivating hospitals and doctors to use advanced and latest technology with the aim of
increasing quality and quantity of services to their patients so that various diseases would be
eliminated from the place. To attain this, proper training is provided to the doctors by the experts
so that no obstacle would be faced by them while working effectively.
Personal values comes with the person culture they possessed from the starting but it
should be change according to the rules and regulations of the hospital as it must be essential to
get adjusted in the environment where they are working. For instance, when I first arrived in the
hospital I was not sure that who to talk when to talk as their culture is different but proper
training is provided to me so that excellent communication and interpersonal skills would be
inculcate within me. As per the Romanian culture, people does not prefers to visit hospitals
physically because they have more trust over home remedies as compare to social care services.
So its doctor and nurses responsibility to motivate them by launching various programmes so
that awareness and benefits of social care would be disseminate to the people (Koh and Rudd,
2015).
TASK 2
2.1 Assessment of current skills and ability
It is important for every individual to find their capabilities and weakness as it assist them
to modify their performance accordingly (Hanko, 2016). For instance if worker of HSC removes
Document Page
their weakness and strengthen their strengths while working then their practices and performance
while working would improve to a certain level. My current skills and ability is explained below,
Strengths Weakness
I have good communication skills which helps
me to make rapport with different type of
patients coming to hospitals. As mentioned
above, Romanian people does not trust and
prefers to talk to strangers due to which these
skills are essential for me.
One of my biggest weakness is short temper
behaviour. It is hard for me to control my anger
at that which sometimes affect me in a negative
way. For instance, if any patients irritate me
while working then sometimes I shouted on
them which affects my principles which I have
gained from the Romania.
Other strengths of my behaviour is patience
while talking. It is an essential factor in the
HSC industry as if accurate information is not
provided to me by the patients then it becomes
hard for me to give prescription accordingly.
I have less knowledge regarding the new laws
and medical information in the HSC sector due
to which I have to give more focus on reading
and implementing them accordingly.
It should be important in the HSC to follow the
rules and guidelines provided by the hospitals
as it avoid any negligence while working and
legal issues which might be imposed by the
government. I always follow ethical rules as it
helps me perform my task with highest
productivity. Various ethical principles
includes no discrimination at work,
prescription according to patients health etc.
I found problem while handling patients from
the Romania as I do not understand their
concerns due to the language barriers.

2.2 Holistic development plan with short, medium and long term goals
As already mentioned in the above part, I have shared my strengths and weakness and
now it’s time for me to work on that effectively as finding these capabilities and weakness does
not affect the performance of the person. Proper dedication is required from the end of
employees as without their proper strategy and development plan, they cannot attain professional
development in the future (Golightley and Goemans, 2017). PDP is a documents which consist
of various strategies and actions taken by the individual to remove their weakness so that they
can perform better in the critical as well as in normal conditions. My PDP plan is given below,

2.4 Evaluating effectiveness of development plan as a health and social care practitioner
After making the PDP, I have evaluated my effectiveness of development as a health and
social care practitioner:
Improved communication skills: I have improved my communication skills which has
helped me in effectively developing in my career. At the beginning I was not knowing
various ways used to communicate with the patients but the PDP plan has helped me a lot
and benefit me in developing effective professional skills. I have attended conferences,
seminar and meeting where I get a chance to speak in front of mass audience which has
helped me in gaining confidence. Meeting and seminar have benefited me in
communicating orally, increase my knowledge and skills. It has also helped me in
gaining expert knowledge which will help me in achieving success in my career. On the

other hand it is very time consuming. I have explored the communication techniques such
as written, verbal, listening, non-verbal for the purpose of transferring information,
mentoring and decision making, PDP plan was very effective for me in monitoring my
performance and focus on activities that I need to improve. PDP plan has helped me in
evaluating the weak points which I have to improve and strong points which will help me
to get top of my career as a health care practitioner for e.g. I was weak in English
speaking through monitoring and evaluation I have found out that I also need to attend
conferences which will be more beneficial for me. I can effectively communicate with the
patients from different nationality speaking different language. I am able to understand
what patient are able to tell. This skill has benefited me in both personal and professional
development.
Developing career: Personal development plan has effectively helped in developing my
career. I want to be at the top of my career. By facing my challenges of language barrier
and fluency in speaking English I feel confident in doing my work. I have develop skills
and characteristics which are required in performing role of nurse. This will help me in
gaining priority while applying for job in the role of nurse. All these skills are essential in
the career of health and social care (Vetere and Stratton, 2016). I want to become a nurse,
PDP has developed my skills in dealing with pressure in case of any emergency and I can
handle it. PDP plan has also benefited me to achieve success in my career by evaluating
my performance thoroughly and identifying areas which need to be improves such as I
need to take classes and training of medical in order to get my dream job of nurse.
TASK 3
3.1 Nature of different professional relationships
In a health and social care there are various types of professionals. Professionals may
vary depending on the illness of patients such as nurses, CPN, GP, health adviser, occupational
therapist and physiatrist (Avidov-Ungar, 2016). When we think of professional relationship in
this industry, the first relation which comes to mind is the relationship between practitioner and
patient but there is another relation. There is a relationship with our colleagues. An organisation
which supports service users to build their career, there professionals are social worker or family
worker.
14
Document Page
There are also project workers and support workers within the staff members, they are
not professionals but they play an important role alongside with professionals. To support health
and social care users professionals work together. Professionals who work together are called
multi-disciplinary team work. They are a group of people from different field who come to take
care of patients. It helps patient to have a control over their lives and have a good health status.
The nature of professionals is to help their team member in dealing with difficult cases.
They promote coordination among the team members and check and balance to ensure that
interest of all parties are concerned and their rights are addressed. Professionals identify the gap
between service and benefits in communication and coordination between them (Vangrieken and
et.al., 2017).
It is important to maintain professional relationship in any business so that employees
and staff can grow in their career. They raise the skills and knowledge of the colleagues by make
them learn about new strategies, ideas, methods, resources and approaches which can be used to
enhance the health of the patients (Bornman and Louw, 2019).
Working and maintaining professional relationship improves team performance, common
learning, multi-tasking, collaborative practices and professional development. It will engage
people to work better, they will feel motivated and it will enhance the quality of care. If there is
any emergency where nurse or practitioner is not able to deal with the situation, than professional
help is needed to save the life of patient. To maintain good relations with the professional there
need to be trust, loyalty, honesty, respect and compromise (Ruddy, Thomas-Hemak and Meade,
2016).
3.2 Effectiveness in promoting and supporting rights of individual
I promote and respect the rights of every individual. As a social care practitioner it is my
responsibility to help patients and fulfil their needs whether they have illogical request. Each and
every need of the patient need to be accompanied because they are the essential party of
healthcare industry. I make sure that every patient knows their rights this maintains trust between
me and patient. Patient will feel secure. Patients have right to choose and take decisions, after
making choice I explain the advantage and disadvantage of their choice and leave final decision
on them. It is very important to treat all the patients with equality and dignity. I ensure that every
patient is given good quality of service which promotes their rights. The main goal is to support
their decisions and rights.
15
Document Page
By protecting the rights of an individual, it has increased knowledge, it benefits me in
understanding the power to meet the duties and my addressing inequalities. It also improved my
care experience towards patients. I make them understand their worth. I keep their information
confidential i.e. I protect their health records and do not disclose them with anyone. I do not
discriminate patients in providing services because it is by responsibility to make their health
good. Protecting their rights can benefit me in getting promotions. It will develop my career.
I understand the importance of promoting equality through various legislation in health
and social care followed by my company:
The Equality act 2010 protects patients from the discrimination on the basis of age,
religion, gender, disability and race (Welp and et.al., 2018). I follow this act in my
workplace and treat every patient equal.
The Human rights act 1998 defines principles of human right equality i.e. FREDA
(fairness, respect, equality, dignity and autonomy). I provide fair treatment to the patients
and give them respect so they feel valued and comfortable.
The Care act 2014 defines that patient should get the care according to their requirement
(McMillan, McConnell and O’Sullivan, 2016). Care should not be tailored according to
the practitioner. Patient has rights to ask whatever he wants to be treated. I make sure that
all the care and treatment is provided according to their need so that they are satisfied and
there health is improved.
3.3 Ways to resolve issues in professional relationships
Issues arise in every organisation, how you deal with the problem is the most important
part. The main issues that arise in the health and social care is building relations with patients
and cope up with new technologies which will help in efficient working. There is a lack of
communication between the senior doctor and practitioners which affects treatment given to
patient (Bennett-Levy, 2018). The professional relation between patient and nurse form an
individual union. There are various ways to solve those relations:
Person centred approach: It is an approach used in health care which focuses on the
need of an individual, his desires and goals. Patients’ needs and desire become the
important factor which need to be assessed in treatment. Patients’ needs should be the
first priority than the needs identified by the professionals of health care. I have
developed various frameworks that need to be provided by the practitioner or nurse as a

person centred care such as being responsive to them, knowing the patient needs, provide
proper care, build trustful relation with them, involving patient’s family so that they feel
emotionally comfortable. By using this approach professional relationship issues can be
resolved (Person-centred approach, 2016).
Formal and informal meetings: Issues like lack of communication, technologies,
strategies and ideas can be resolved by arranging meeting (Markham, Gentile and
Graham, 2017). Meetings can be formal and informal. Senior doctors should arrange
meeting to communicate with the practitioners, nurse and other staff of the healthcare.
They identify the problems faced by the staff and try to understand and resolve them.
They share information regarding new technologies, strategies and ideas that need to be
used in the workplace so that treatments can be done smoothly.
Involving patients in decision making: Patients should be involved in the decision
making process and should be informed with every small information which can affect
his/her life. Decision of medical requires interaction with the patient because if anything
went wrong it will become dangerous for the life of patient. Patient will blame the doctor
which creates a big issues. Doctor's profession can be in danger. Thus it is essential to
inform and involve patients in the process to maintain professional relationship.
TASK 4
4.1 Effectiveness of personal contributions when working with others in health and social care
practice
In health and social care personal contribution ensures that the whole organization
succeeds in providing healthcare. I am good at communicating my thoughts that ensures that
patients are listening to me. Good communication leads to successful outcomes. Communication
can only be effective if it is two ways and I have that ability to understand what patients are
trying to say or what they actually feel and can easily relate to it. My understanding has me to
know patients deeply, they don't hesitate to come to me and talk about each and every thing they
want. They actually talk about the real feelings they have or from what they are suffering. My
communication skills and understanding skills has helped me to be more patient and has enhance
my personality, helped patients in opening up to me easily and they feel comfortable and helped
17
Document Page
the organization as when the employees are hardworking and dedicated it will definitely
contribute to the success of the organization.
4.2 The limits of own work role impacts on work with others
I cannot perform various task simultaneously because I lack multi-tasking skills which
puts a limit to my working ability. I'm not good at time management as when I am listening to a
patient I forget everything else, this thing has both positive and negative impacts. The positive
thing is that I carefully listen to one patient but it affects the timing of other patients and becomes
a drawback. It sometimes affect the working of others also, as now they have to perform the
work that I'm not able to at the same time and their work pressure is increased that influence their
working and eventually making a issue for organization. I lack the skill of time management that
makes me delay for every task. I put my entire time for some patients and rest patients are left
and then they are handled by others, involving their time brings disputes and conflicts between
us. This has made my relation with my peer members and subordinate very uncomfortable and
unsatisfactory and has affected everyone working.
4.3 Own role in minimizing barriers to effective teamwork in health and social care practice
I analysed that my working is being affected by some abilities that I lack and affecting
the teamwork also. My coordination with my team member was less so I started to solve them by
firstly managing my time. I started visiting most of the patients and listen to them. Now I don't
give extra time to patients at the same time I visit them but I talk to some of them in my free time
or after my office hours in my personal time. This doesn't burden other people and affect their
work, and less disputes and conflicts occur now. The environment is now comfortable for every
person here. And the fact of lacking multi-tasking skills needed the cooperation of other people
there, I tried to handle that pressure also and finally conquer that thing also. Minimizing these
barriers helped in effective teamwork and maintaining good relation with every person there.
Self-motivation and cooperation from others helped me in overcoming these barriers.
4.4 Improve personal contributions for the effectiveness of a team.
I first managed by time management and multitasking skills so it helped in contributing
to team effectiveness. I improved my skills to motivate others, so that it can bring positivity in
the people and they stay happy and focused. I gave an idea for interacting and involving with
18
Document Page
patients that brought an environment of comfort and feeling of belongingness. Team find it
effective and even they also involved with me in the activity and this developed the team spirit in
employees. I developed leadership skills and help others by guiding and directing them related to
their work. This enhanced my skills and help me guide the team and that developed a feeling of
responsiveness within me. I developed conflict resolution skills so that I can solve the issues that
keep on disturbing the team work. I work on my patience level as it is the most important thing
in a professional life. Every skill developed by me helped me in gaining the trust of my team and
improved our working.
CONCLUSION
From the above mentioned report, it can be summarize that values and culture plays an
essential role in individual working life as it modify their actions and activities accordingly. In
the HSC industry, employees should try to remain ethical in nature because it enhances their
clinical practices while working. Person working in this industry should try to regularly learn
new developments in the sector as changes in the environment affects HSC performance in a
positive or negative way.
