1PERSONAL STATEMENT
This personal statement is for enrolment at the 1 year MSc course in Neuroscience and
Translational Medicine, Queen Mary University of London. My interest in the living world dates
back to my middle school years, where I excelled in science and mathematics. I graduated my
secondary and high secondary certificate examination with distinction grades. It seemed only
logical that I should pursue a career in medicine. I pursued an MBBS course from International
Medical College, University of Dhaka. When I began learning medicine, I got the opportunity to
explore the range of enigmas and mystery that govern the functioning of the human body, the
most complex machine in the world. This provided me the encouragement to solidify and
reinforce my intense interest in understanding the underlying anatomy and physiology of the
organs and cells that our body is comprised of. My graduate medical course also provided the
opportunity to work with a range of patients, each suffering from different health abnormalities.
The experience was overwhelmingly positive. It acted as a motivation. Furthermore, the medical
training also helped me to redefine myself and facilitated adjustment to a range of concurrent
novel experiences. Initially, the job seemed demanding and challenging. However, gradually I
became aware of the fact that as medical students and future doctors, we are responsible for
saving lives of thousands of people.
Following my medical degree, I began working as a medical officer at the Department of
Medicine, International Medical College & Hospital. In addition, I also served as a lecturer at the
Department of Pharmacology, at the same institute for a short duration. Having completed a one
year internship from the aforementioned medical college provided additional benefits. Learning
on the job, rather than the classroom was an important experience that facilitated my application
of skills at the workplace. Moreover, I also received the opportunity to work in several
healthcare facilities such as, the specialty offices, outpatient centres and emergency departments.

This also enhanced by professional behaviour and clinical expertise. A workshop in
programmatic management of TB control, further enhanced my medical knowledge and skills. I
intend to pursue the MSc course at the university for gaining a deeper understanding of the
pharmacology and neural networks that control the functioning of the entire human body. The
translational approach in the course will further assist me to better utilise my clinical skills, while
teaching medicine in an academic setting, in near future. Furthermore, I also intend to learn
about the principles that govern drug design. This will help me better understand the clinical
management aspects that are needed to be implemented for treating neurological diseases.
Having pursued this course, I intend to care unmet demands of various neurological diseases, and
redesign the care delivery practices, for treating all patients who are in distress. I am highly
aware of the reputation of the university and my conversations with several alumni have
increased my interest in attending the course. I hope to get the privilege of continuing my
postgraduate studies at the fine institution.
