Introduction
A number of studies have concluded that sleep plays a key role in ensuring well-being and good health in individuals. Getting sufficient sleep at proper times helps to
protect the physical health, mental health, safety and quality of life for individuals. The Studies into sleep has also revealed that people have varied sleep patterns that
are shaped by a variety of factors such as a person’s age gender, and working hours (Doi et al., 2000). A specific study conducted by Howard University in 2017
determined that the sleep duration and quality of Africans decreased after they immigrated into the U.S (Obi, 2017). Investigating the impact of sleep on individuals is
important due to the fact that research has linked not having sufficient and quality sleep with increased risk of developing diabetes, heart complications, depression and
stroke. This is effectively reflected in a research carried out by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine which revealed that there is a direct relationship between sleep
duration and depression. The longer the sleep duration the more effective depression treatments for the individual are and the lower the risk of the person getting
depression (Carskadon, 2010). On the other hand, the shorter the sleep duration, the l higher the risk of the individual getting depression and the treatment becomes
less effective (Pilcher, Ginter, & Sadowsky, 1997). Therefore by effectively understanding how sleep affects individuals, one effectively prevent the risks listed. Doing this
will help to increase the welfare and productivity of the individual.
Aim and Objectives,
This project aimed to analyze the sleep quality of Indian migrants who are living in Perth and specifically to:
make a determination on the relationship between an individuals age, working hours and gender and the quality of sleep for Indian immigrants residing in Perth;
determine the relationship that exists between demographic factors and sleep; and
develop interventions that allow for quality sleep.
Methodology
Questions were divided into seven categories focusing on
different aspects of the research( sleep duration, subjective sleep
quality, habitual sleep efficiency, sleep latency, use of medication
for sleep, sleep disturbance and daytime dysfunction)
PSQI is used to make gauge poor sleep quality or good sleep quality. Standard
values below 5 indicates good sleep quality and values above 5 representing
bad sleep quality.
SPSS was used to make determinations on the relationship between sleep
quality and demographic factors with the P value of less than<0.05.
X Chi square test was used to make a determination on difference that existed
between the groups.
Discussion and Recommendations
From the facts it is evident that Sleep disturbances are common among adolescents due to physical, social, emotional, substance abuse and stress that they
experience. In the research the participants general health played a key role in the instances of poor sleep quality that was witnessed. There is difference between the
subjective and objective findings of the sleep quality. The difference in sleep quality between men and women is largely due to the fact that most women do not work
under the same level of pressure as their male counterparts. Indian immigrants in Perth who work between 11 and 20 hours per week are more likely to have very good
sleep overall. Therefore based on this it is logical that individuals change their work culture to ensure that they have better sleep quality. This can be achieved by
reducing the number of hours someone is working, and reducing the workload and engaging in less stressful activities.
Results
Data from 100 samples was analyzed at the significant level of 95% and a p
value of 0.05.
Approximately 54% of participants were female and 46% were men
X2 (1) = 6.8, p – value = 0.009 hence 0.009 << 0.05 therefore, it is logical to
conclude that there is significant difference between the sleep quality of men
and women.
Women have better sleep quality than there male counterparts
Full time participants having poor sleep quality than the casual or part time
working participants.
the sleep quality rate for respondents who were never married is good at
70%, and 30% for the never married respondents how had poor sleep quality
since the results reveal 0.123 >> 0.05, it is logical to conclude that the sleep
quality of Indian immigrants in Perth does not differ between people who were
never married and those who are married.
