Students will research, analyses and present a case study of a documented
project of their choice, identifying the scope, cost and issues experienced by
the project. Students will distil lessons to be learned from the case study and
share these with the class in a presentation of approximately 8-12 mins. A
template, examples and guidance will be provided on UCLearn. Students will
need to nominate a class in which to present by week 2 or a slot will be
allocated.

[Case Study]
Brief Description: It is a multi-purpose and under
construction sports and indoor entertainment venue
that has been started in 2012. This project will allow to
have some distance gap between the seating
arrangements and facilities for the audience ranging
between 5000 and 14000 people. The DHW
(Department of Housing) is responsible for planning,
scoping, and delivery of a sophisticated plan that is
feasible and effective enough for the management and
delivery of the entire project.

• The Perth stadium is a multipurpose stadium
in Perth, Western Australia
• Estimated capacity for the stadium will be
60,000
• It will allow the audiences to have better and
comfortable space

• A description of the work or product
– Perth will allow accommodation of about 60,000 people
that can also be extended to 65,000 audiences in single
time
– It will be applicable for the football and cricket grounds
– Seating arrangements will be comfortable
• Where there options for a solution?
– A wide stadium or biggest stadium will allow more
audiences to have benefit of viewing the arena from a
single platform

Requirements / Products
• Architecture and Design – The design of the stadium
is oval but it is able to accommodate around 70,000
people seating in rectangular mode.
• Food and amenities – There are over 50 food and
beverage outlets serving all over the stadium along
with 650 CCTV cameras for surveillance.
• Transport – Six platform railway station and 22 stand
bus station that are located nearby helps the visitors
to easily travel from any place.

Project details
• Cost: The proposed cost for the stadium construction
was around 700 Million dollars and 300 Million
dollars was allocated for public transport works.
However, in an inquiry by the state government it
was found that the actual cost of the project was
$1.8 billion.
• Timeframe: The timeframe for project was from
December 2013 to January 2018.
• Constraints: As identified from the reports, budget
was the major constraint in this project as it
exceeded far more than the estimated budget. 7

• The budget exceeded far more than the
estimate of 700 Million dollar as it took $1.8
billion to complete the project.
• The project was completed well within
estimated time and it was opened in the
desired time of January 2018.

Lessons to Learn
From the project, the following points has been
learnt:
• Proper budgeting has to be done before
progressing.
• Constant monitoring have to be done for
budget and time in terms of progress.
• Proper allocation of resources is required to
ensure successful completion of project.

Result
• The completed stadium arena with a capacity
of 60,000 people was being delivered from
this project.
• The project was on time and met the
requirements but it was unable to meet the
budget as it exceeded from $700 Million to
$1.8 billion.
