Introduction
The following report is based on approaches that leadership and management have in global
context. This report is in context with Pharacy2U, an online mail-order pharmacy. It is UK’s
largest online pharmacy. The report focuses on various aspects of the leadership and
management in the organisation. The communication method and leadership styles helps in
proper management and decision making in the organisation. The leadership style greatly affects
the performance of the employees. Globalisation affects the business in various ways and there
are various factors which affects the process of globalisation. An effective interdepartmental
communication is also necessary for proper working of the organisation.

1. Describe the functional areas of the chosen organisation and its hierarchy of
management.
Pharmacy2U is an online mail-order pharmacy. It is UK’s largest online pharmacy. It has been
providing electronic prescription transfer services in UK. For the successful growth of a business
various departments are made which are referred to as functional areas, with each one having
their own set of objectives and path to achieve them (Sevilla, 2015). The main functional areas of
Pharmacy2U are as follows:
Human resources: Human resource is one of the most important asses of the
organisation. HR department is responsible for the purpose of recruiting employees with the
required skills. It also ensures the welfare of employees, and protects their rights.
Marketing and Advertising: Effective marketing strategies are very effective in
attracting customers, which increases sales of the organisation and ensures great profit earning
and long run of the business. Advertising is a great to share and communicate the details about
the organisation’s product and services. Marketing and Advertising department is responsible for
promoting the business and increasing the sales.
Account and Financing: This particular department is responsible for accounting,
planning, checking financial resources. It makes sure that there is no lack of financial resources
in the organisation. It focuses on arranging and managing financial resources. It also produces
and monitors the financial statements of the organisation.
Customer Support Service: Customer support department is responsible for the purpose
of interacting with the customer, resolving their solution and helping them with their queries.
Customer support service is necessary before, after and while providing product and service to
the customers. Customer support service is responsible for the purpose of increasing the
customer relation with the organisation. An efficient customer support service will build more
customer loyalty (Gartenstein, 2018).
Sales: Sales department is one of the important departments of any organisation. It helps
in generating revenue for the organisation. The sales department is responsible for making profits
for the organisation. Sales department plans and creates new sales strategies for the purpose of
increasing the sales of the organisation. It coordinates with production department for making
sure that the products are available on time for satisfying the demand and also coordinates with

marketing and advertising department for the purpose of advertising products; launch events,
creating marketing strategies etc. which lead to successful increase in the sales rate.
Management Hierarchy
A manager has to perform and manage a lot of processes in the organisation for its successful
operation. Some of the processes include planning, organising, directing, controlling etc.
Management hierarchy is the process which is used the management of an organisation for
completing the managerial tasks. Management hierarchy is a type of leadership structure which
assigns authorities according to the ranks (Saez, 2017).
The management of Pharmacy2U has been divided in three layers which consists of top-level
management, middle-level management, and low-level management, in which the top-level
management set goals, prepare plans and monitors the whole organisation. Middle-level
management is responsible for parting the organisational activities for the purpose of achieving
the goals and objectives set by the top-level management. Low-level management are the
working unit of the organisation. They are responsible for performing daily task and perform
productive tasks.
Top-level management includes high level title holders such as Chief Operating Officer,
Chief Executive Officer, President, Vice president Etc.
Middle-level management includes title holders like General Manager, Divisional
manager, Regional manager etc.
Low-level management includes title holders such as Department manager, Store
manager, Supervisor, Crew leader etc.

Effective communication is very important for the role of leaders and managers in an
organisation. Communication helps the leaders and managers to perform and carry out their jobs
efficiently. Communication helps in transfer of the information to all employees of the
organisation which helps them to focus and work according the plans and procedures developed
by the leaders and managers. Communication helps in building and executing strategy.
Communication can be written or spoken, the purpose is to convey the correct message
(Burnison, 2018). Communication is also the way by which different departments connect
convey information with each other. Effective communication helps in building an effective
relationship between all the departments and employees at all level which helps the leaders and
managers to prevent conflicts among them. The importance of communication in leadership and
management in Pharmacy2U are as follows:
Communication helps effectively in informing and clarifying the employees about the
roles that can assigned to them increasing the motivation of the employees, which increases the
performance of the employees.
Communication helps in simplifying the decision making process for the organisation as
effective communication leads to easy identification of the objectives and coordination between
all the employees (IntDom, 2016).
Having a proper communication among all the employees makes the controlling process
easier. It helps the leaders and managers to effectively coordinate with other employees, study
their behaviour and helps in implementing the principles and guidelines in the organisation.
Communication helps in building an efficient team. Proper communication builds a
perfect coordination among all employees which allows everyone to coordinate effectively and
get in touch with other helping out when in need. This builds an efficient team in the
organisation.
Examples of effective interdepartmental coordination in Pharmacy2U are as follows:
Sales department coordinate and communicates with production department to ensure that
production meets the demand of customers.Sales department also coordinates with marketing
department to discuss about strategies to effectively increase the sales.

transport the product to required areas.Coordination between production and finance department,

Globalisation refers to the expansion of a business to international markets. Globalisation
increases the success rate and growth of the business, due to the availability of external markets
and a large customer base. There are many factors that have contributed to globalisation, in the
recent times. Driver refers to the factor that creates a change (Francis, 2011). Some of the main
drivers of globalisation are as follows:
Technology: With the help of better and improved technology, the transportation process
has been simplified. Products can be delivered to every corner of the world. Customers can
access foreign brands and can place orders without even visiting the store, with the availability of
online brand store.
Demography: Demography refers to the size of the population of any country. It plays
an important role in the process of globalisation. High number of population means a larger
customer base for the business. It also increases the availability of labour for the organisation.
Political aspects: Political aspects refer to the political factors that influence the normal
working of the organisation. Various factors like tax implications, government policies, greatly
affect the globalisation process. For the purpose of increasing and promoting the globalisation
process, various barriers coming in the way of globalisation could be removed or minimised,
which will be a great step taken for the purpose of increasing globalisation.
The impact that the globalisation have on the businesses are as follows:
Access to international markets: With the process of globalisation, the business gain
access to international markets, which provides them an opportunity to promote and sell their
products and services in international market, gaining higher sales and revenue, which eventually
increases the profit of the business (Power, 2018).
Large customer base: With the number of customer being limited in national markets,
the businesses face various issues in selling their products and also implementing and trying out
new experimental strategies. However, with the globalisation, the business gain access to a larger
customer base, which gives them opportunity to introduce new products and try new strategies.
In comparison with national market, after globalisation, the demand for the product of business
also increases.

Access to better technology: Globalisation helps the business to gain access to better
technology. Gaining access to international market provides the businesses the opportunity to use
advanced technology present in other countries. This helps in improving the production,
providing better transportation services and provides various other advantages (Erixon, 2018).
Availability of better resources: The resources present in domestic country are very
limited and increased competition also causes the scarcity of the resources. But when a business
gains access to foreign markets, it has the opportunity to use resources of other countries as well.
This helps the business in easily making arrangements of the scarce resources as well (Halabi,
2017).

4. Compare and contrast two chosen styles of leadership or management and select the
most suitable style for modern global organisation along with reasons that why it is so.
The style of leadership or management that the organisation chooses has a great effect on the
performance of the organisation. The leadership style used by the leaders of Pharmacy2U shows
the way in which they lead the employees of the organisations, towards the organisational goal
(Lazzari, 2018). For effective operation of the organisation, it needs to choose the best leadership
style which suits it best. The chosen two types of leadership styles are as follows:
Autocratic or Authoritarian leadership
Autocratic or Authoritarian leadership is a leadership style which provides the leader with
centralised powers and decision making rights. The leader himself assigns tasks and duties,
provides authorities and takes all decision by his own choice without providing other employees
with an opportunity to provide their views (Anastasia, 2016). The leader has no respect for the
views of the employees. He has all the authority to take whatever decision he wants. It has some
positive effects as well such as taking quick decisions, immediate actions etc. Most of the leaders
following this leadership styles are harsh and gives severe punishments to the employees if they
do something wrong. It creates frustration among the employees (Cherry, 2018).
Democratic or Participative leadership
Democratic or participative leadership is a leadership style which provides decentralisation of the
authorities and power of a leader. In this style of leadership, the leader coordinates with the
employees and provides them opportunities to give their views and opinions and also considers
them if found suitable (Cherry, 2018). This encourages the participation of employees in
decision making process. The leader treats the employees with proper respect and leads the team
with encouragement instead of forcing them with fear. The leader sometimes depicts an example
out of himself to motivate the employees. Decision making power stays with the leader but
involving suggestion from the employees and their participation encourages them and boosts up
their motivation. This makes the employees feel that the leader cares about them and their ideas
and suggestions.
Most suitable leadership style for modern global organisation:
Autocratic leadership style is not much effective as the employees wants to be more independent
to focus on the work and apply more efforts, with such harsh nature of the leaders employees

gets dissatisfied with their job, creation of frustration among the employees creates conflicts at

Democratic leadership style is much more effective than Autocratic leadership style for modern
global organisation as it increases the motivation of the employees which improves their job
performance, helps in better coordination among the employees and the management, reduces
conflicts between fellow employees and the management, reduces the employee turnover rate.

organisation. Importance of communication is studies along with the examples how
interdepartmental communication can help in better performance of the organisation. Further,
study is made about the current drivers of the globalisation and the impact that the globalisation
is having on the businesses is studied. Further, the leadership styles are studied along with their
two types, which their suitability discussed with proper explanations about the reason for the
choosing that particular style of leadership.
