Developmental theories divide a child’s development into distinct stages by qualitative
differences in their behaviour (Horowitz, pp. 89-120). A number of theories proposes physical
development and psychological development proceeding through span of life. Development

happens in an orderly manner in varied areas in congruence but can vary amongst individuals.
Piaget’s development stages theories provides the blueprint for stages of intellectual
development in normal human being from infancy to adultho (Farrington, pp. 164-190). The
scope of this essay analyses the four distinct stages of development as per Piaget’s.
Analysis
Jean Piaget, a famous psychologists and developmental biologists analysed intellectual
developments amongst infants, children and teens. According to her there exists four distinct
stages of intellectual or cognitive developments as Sensorimotor, birth to ages 18 to 24 months.
Second stage of development is preoperational stage which initiates from toddlerhood to early
childhood of age 7 year (Duchaine, pp. 126-141). Concrete operational, which starts from ages 7
years to 12 years. Formal operational which is defined by adolescence to adulthood. Children
might pass from one stage to another but at times might reflect multiple characteristics at the
same time. Cognitive development goes through certain sequence or stages, which cannot be
overtaken. Every stage is marked by distinct new intellectual abilities with more complex
understanding regarding the world.
Sensorimotor Stage Activity: During Sensorimotor Stage, infants are mindful of their immediate
surroundings. They have physical interaction with their surrounding focusing on what they see
and do. A touch based toy or pulling toy will be the best leisure activity for infants.
Preoperational Stage Activity: Preoperational Stage children are able to characterize various
things symbolically. They starts developing mature language as they develop memory with
imagination, for analysing differences in future and past. Leisure activity at this stage mostly
involves outside playing and activity sessions. Playing in the woods, visiting museum or zoo is
ideal leisure or toy activity at this stage.
Concrete Operational Stage Activity: Concrete Operational Stage is the preadolescent children
from ages 7 years to 11 years, which reflects concrete reasoning with logical thinking
(Thornberry, pp. 280-300). Children at this stage are starting to becoming more aware regarding
external events. though at this stage children can think abstractly or hypothetically but their

thoughts or feelings might or might not be shared with others or even be reality. Leisure
activities at this time becomes pursuing one’s self interests as playing guitar or any other musical
instrument.
Formal Operational Stage Activity: At the formal operational stage is the fourth stage of
cognitive development that starts at the age 11 years. At this stage they are able to link to
concepts, abstract as science and algebra. They are able to formulate hypothesis or analyse
possibilities in a systematic manner. Activity at this stage would involve watching movies or
going on a long trip somewhere and so on.
Conclusion
The above analysis indicates four distinct stages of development in children. These formal
operational stage leads to final cognitive development stage with gradual accumulation of
knowledge.
