PICOT STATEMENT
Identification of the clinical problem
There are several challenges and barriers that the correctional nurses while providing care
within an incarcerated environment. They have to navigate difficult situations while decision-
making and supplying necessary care interventions to the incarcerated prisoners. Evidence
suggests that prisons provide poor healthcare facilities to the prisoners and nurses are often
on the frontline for this lack of services (Mahoney, 2015). The most commonly identified
nursing problem in male correctional facilities is the deficit in care provision of chronic
diseases to the prisoners, which leads to poorer health outcomes. Nurses often experience
obstacles from the security boundaries which affects the delivery of best possible nursing
care for the prisons. Correctional nurses on duty in male correctional facilities can overcome
these challenges by their interventions that focus on improvement in facilities and funding
supported by the higher authorities. A study conducted in an urban male remand prison
focused on the challenges and betterment of mental health facilities for the incarcerated
prisoners there. This study highlighted the significance of nurses as professionals who can
mediate the prevailing problematic issues to be resolved by the concerned authorities (Samele
et al., 2016). However, it is important to acknowledge that correctional nurses cannot
function to their maximum potential without access to proper medical resources and
cooperation from other team members (Brouchad & Swan, 2016).

asking for support from others.
O (Outcome) The health outcomes can be improved through
implementation of high quality medical services
and recruitment of additional staff to accelerate
the care process.
T (Time) Nurses can intervene with an immediate effect
after identifying a problem adequately. Although,
notifying and involving the higher officials so
that they acknowledge the issues and establish
relevant measures could be a time consuming
process.
