The following paper clearly states the acute shortage of pilots in the US airline
industry in the future years. The retirement age of the US pilots being 65 years, it will be
difficult for the industry to cope up with the huge shortage. The major reason for the shortage
has however been cited as the different hurdles that needs to be crossed by the aspirants to
become a professional pilot. The increase in the costs of the training and the increase in the
minimum flying hours has been behind the current shortage in the industry. The major impact
will be faced by the regional airlines especially the low cost airlines that has a very tight
budget and thus going by the current cost escalations and pilot shortage in the industry, the
Airline industry of USA has dark clouds hovering over it.

The regional airlines had been struggling to meet the criterion for pilot recruitment
due to the new changes in the First Officer Qualification. The new changes has been a
major problem for these airlines as their stringent budget and limited scope has made it
practically impossible to address the following issues. The changes in the rule has also
increased the cost of the training which makes a significant number of aspirants back off
from the career opportunity. The major concerns has again been the increase in the flight

timings and the cost escalations. These reasons have escalated the tensions in the industry,
which have led to different problems.

The later part of the 19th century has given rise to the shortage of the pilots in US
aviation industry. The changes in the rules and the increase in the strictness of the tests has
made life difficult for the people who have been a part of the industry especially the pilots.
As mentioned in the other papers, the following paper too supports the reason behind the
sudden shortage and acclaims it to be the rise in the training costs and the increase in the
flying time. The paper uses Human Capital Theory as the shortage of pilots involves the
shortage of qualified human capital. A sample of six airline executives were selected and
interviewed and the results showed that the selections made by the company address the
changes and disruptive influences in the industry.
