The following paper clearly states the acute shortage of pilots in the US airline
industry in the future years. The retirement age of the US pilots being 65 years, it will be
difficult for the industry to cope up with the huge shortage. The major reason for the shortage
has however been cited as the different hurdles that needs to be crossed by the aspirants to
become a professional pilot. The increase in the costs of the training and the increase in the
minimum flying hours has been behind the current shortage in the industry. The major impact
will be faced by the regional airlines especially the low cost airlines that has a very tight
budget and thus going by the current cost escalations and pilot shortage in the industry, the
Airline industry of USA has dark clouds hovering over it.

sudden shortage and acclaims it to be the rise in the training costs and the increase in the
flying time. The paper uses Human Capital Theory as the shortage of pilots involves the
shortage of qualified human capital. A sample of six airline executives were selected and
interviewed and the results showed that the selections made by the company address the
changes and disruptive influences in the industry.
