Background
Plastic collective was formed after a couple of years after the founder of the organisation,
Louise Hardman witnessed a slow death of a sea turtle that had consumed plastic
(Plasticcollective.co 2019). As a zoologist, she was determined to help protect animals and sea
creatures from exploitation. Furthermore, the hazardous nature of plastic was soon realised by
the latter as a result of which she decided to establish an organisation that helps in the assortment
and collection of plastic wastes that are released into the nature. The mission of the company has
been realised in the organisation’s motive to empower the community by guiding the latter
towards removal and transformation of plastic from the system. The plastic collective
organisation is an NGO that helps in protecting the sea life and the communities as a whole by
accumulating plastic and transforming the latter into the smaller sizes. As a sustainable initiative,
the company collects plastic and plastic-based wastes from oceans and water bodies
(Plasticcollective.co 2019). Then with technology they developed with high levels of innovation,
they reduce the size of the plastic and invest the same back into the economy by following a
similar guideline similar to that of a closed loop economy (Geissdoerfer et al. 2017). The
operation of the company can be deemed to be favourable for various counties in the south
pacific including Australia. These comprise of diverse sea life and attract tourists and surfers
from all parts of the world (Dungey et al. 2017). Hence, making the area free of plastics is can
help the countries in terms of sustainability of the sea life and the economy of the countries as a
whole.

Sustainability Strategy
Micro environmental sustainability strategy
The main initiative behind the creation of the organisation was to contribute to the
sustainability initiative that help in betterment of the environment and the community strategies
as a whole. The mission of the organisation is to serve the community by formulating strategies
in the development that help in solving the issues related to the accumulation plastic. The nature
of initiatives of the company can be deemed to be sustainability initiatives. It has been found that
the number of NGO’s that are formulated to meet the demands of the community in terms of
catering to the environmental sustainability initiatives. The strategy that has been used by the
organisation to carry out the initiatives start from changes that have taken had to be taken place
in the micro environment of the company. Since the organisation is of a nature that is considered
similar to that of an NGO, revenue generation is not the prime goal of the company
(Albuquerque et al. 2013). The company has formulated collaborative partnerships with various
organisation including eco barge clean seas Inc., Coca Cola south pacific, TJX, Southern Cross
University, CSR Asia and many other charitable organisation who share similar objectives with
that of the organisation (Plasticcollective.co 2019). The main strategy of the organisation
involves inspiring communities across Australia that would help the latter in contributing to
sustainable initiatives and the most notable strategy that has been carried out by the company
involves the Shruder Program (Plasticcollective.co 2019). The Shruder Program that the
organisation has been carrying out involve. The latter incorporates the use of an industrial level
plastic shredder that breaks down plastic and also does the job of an extruder
(Plasticcollective.co 2019). It is used to recycle used plastic to form newly formed plastic
products that can be re-invested into the economy.

Stakeholders
The people of the Australia community, various organisations and the abiotic factors
including both the flora and the fauna of the environment, along with the various partners of the
organisation have been recognised as the stakeholders of the organisation. It is evident that the
amount of plastic that is generated by industries is on the rising verge. It has been estimated by
the company, that if the accumulation of plastic goes on at the same rate, the amount of plastic
that will be found in water bodies across the South Pacific Ocean will surpass the amount of
aquatic creatures in the ocean (Tanaka et al. 2013). Hence, the company has been able to identify
the elements and have formulated a strategy that helps in the formation of a strategy that involves
a completely green marketing mix as the latter has been identified as the most effective measure
that is used for the purpose of B2B branding (Kumar and Christodoulopoulou 2014). The issue
that has been detected by the organisation is grave and affects the viability of businesses
(Leonidou, Katsikeas and Morgan 2013). All the stakeholders of the organisation are dependent
on the environment in one way or the other. Thus, it should be the goal of organisation to protect
the base that helps in supporting the activities that are carried out by the companies and various
social entities.
Case synthesis
For organisations and initiatives that are sustainable in nature, it is the prime role of the
same to carry out the operations in terms of gaining familiarity to the strategy that will be
employed by them to identify the potential issues and then formulate strategies that will help the
organisation cope with the issues that that they have been able to identify (Zeng, Phan and
Matsui 2015). The strategies that can be incorporated by the company along with the activities
that contribute to the initiative of the organisation in identification of the issues and formulation

of the strategies to help contribute to the same (Wang et al. 2016). The first step should involve
pertaining to education to the members of the organisation as it will ensure that the members of
the company are able to contribute to the initiative. It should be followed by education and
awareness that the organisation would spread in the community regarding the importance of the
issues that concern the operations of the organisation and that of the community as a whole. It
should be followed by formulation of strategies that will help in catering to the highlighted
issues. Formulation of association with organisations of similar nature can help; the company in
mitigation of the issue that they have been able to identify (Beh and Lombardo 2014). The last
step of the process is characterised by monitoring of the process that is carried out by the
company that will help them in checking the viability of the operations and the success that is
faced by the company in catering to the needs of the stakeholders of the organisation.
Strategy implementation
Sustainable strategy management involves formulation of sustainable strategies that help
in catering to the needs of the organisation in terms of gaining appreciation from the stakeholders
of the organisation (Noe et al. 2017). The strategy that has to be taken by the company will
incorporate the general managerial functions. The steps will involve planning, organising,
leading and controlling. Following is the explanation of the stages;
Planning: Planning is one the most important criterion that has to be followed by the
organisation in order to follow the initiatives that are taken up by organisation while aiming to
carry put certain goals in an organisation (Simon 2013). The target for the company has been
identified and it is mitigation of issues that are related to generation of plastic in the oceans.
Furthermore, the medium to cope with the issues have also been planned by the company in the
form of the Shruder that the company will use to solve the issue related to generation of high

volumes of plastic. The social and the economic aspects have also been identified by the
company and the measures that will be taken for mitigating the issues related to sustainability of
the economy has been identified.
Organising: With emergence of collaborative organisations with companies with similar
motives, the company has been able to carry out organisation of the initiatives that have been
carried out by the company. Furthermore, the latter have been able to assimilate the resources,
identify the target and develop measure for coping with the issue that has been presented
(Massis, Frattini and Lichtenthaler 2013). The company is clear about the goals that they have
established and have identified the methods to help in betterment of the community and that of
the economy as well.
Leading: It is the role of leaders to lead the motives of an organisation towards certain goals.
Hence, it the role of the leaders to formulate strategies that help in contributing to the objectives
that have been propounded by the company (Latu et al. 2013). It is the role of the company to
lead the communities towards the achievement of increasing the awareness of the community in
terms of catering to the needs of the community. The aim of the organisation is to contribute
their efforts in terms reducing the accumulation of plastic in water bodies across the south pacific
that will help in solving the issues associated with saving the aquatic life from exploitation
against plastic.
Controlling: The viability of the plan is monitored by the company by incorporating the
measures that help them in adjudging the viability of the initiative. By checking the amount of
plastic they have been able to accumulate and by checking on the figures associated with the
generation of recycled plastic items, the company will be able to control and check the viability
of the strategy that the organisation implemented.
