As per the PMBOK guide, the project charter is important while starting a project mostly
because it provides the authorization to the project manager to start working on an authorized
project (Rose, 2013). The charter provides the project executives with a clear understanding of
the goals and project requirements. This is one of the key reasons behind the charter being
generated in the course of the “define” process. According to the PMBOK guide, the “define
process” is the first step to be accomplished in a project and this process is concluded mainly in
the “initiating” process domain.

The main purpose of the scope statement is to provide a baseline understanding of the
identified scope and the deliverables needed to be completed prior to the completion of the any
undertaken project (Heldman, 2018). The scope statement is a document that is mainly prepared
to ascertain that there is a mutual understanding of the key project scope among all the
stakeholders associated with a project.

The process groups significantly differs from the project phases. The only similarity
between the process groups and project phases lies in the names of the process groups which are
“Initiate, Plan, Execute, Monitor and Control and Close” (Kerzner, 2017). These names are
similar to the phases of project life cycle. The difference lies in the fact that the process groups
can be repeated in all the phases of project lifecycle. Thus, it can be indicated that process groups
are performed or might be repeated within each phase of project lifecycle.
