LONELY HEARTS
Poetry explication is defined as a short analysis to understand the meanings and other
concepts. Lonely Hearts is one of the famous poems that is written by Wendy Cop. It is a classic
example of villanelle form of poetry to show loneliness in the most profound order. In this poem,
Wendy has described the turmoil status of a man who is in search of a companion and not true
love. The wait has been prolonged and deeply affected his life. The use of tercet clearly signifies
the tone of aloofness and emptiness of the man with the adoption of adjacent triplet. The first and
third lines of the first tercet is repeating in the 19 lines to emphasize on the difficulty level by the
poet to give a clear explanation. Furthermore, villanelle are used by poets to use tercets for better
understanding and conveying emotions on the readers' minds.
Herein, Wendy has beautifully depicted the angst of a lonely man who is in need of a
companion to spend his life with more meaning and significance. Each tercet is metered and is in
unrhytmic tone and has been used by Wendy in any three lines of poetry. It is understandable
with question “Can someone make my simple wish come true?” (“Hearts” 1-6-12-18) that this
man has awaited for his companion and now would love to have somebody to share his fears,
failures and successes. This question was repeated in each tercet that demonstrated his long wait
and quest of finding partner, he would not be ready to give up. In above, use of words “simple
wish” shed light on the melancholy tone of the man mentioned in this poem, who is looking out
for a partner.
“Male biker seeks female for touring fun/Do you live in North London?Is it you?/Gay
vegetarian whose friends are few/I'm into music, Shakespeare” (“Hearts” 2-5). This infers that
the man rides bike and is seeking for a woman from North London to go on tour with him to
enjoy. Also, it includes that his interest consists of music, Shakespeare style with vegetarian
preference and has few friends. Nonetheless, this man might have been lonely for so long that he
used advertisement as a medium for his search. Use of words like 'male biker' and 'gay
vegetarian' has demonstrated interesting use of expressions. This elucidated that the villanelle
form put restrictions on Wendy. However, this poem celebrated simplicity and captured the
readers' with its impeccable style of writing.

Another example of repetition: “Do you live in North London? Is it you?” (“Hearts” 3-
9-15-19) where Wendy has used a traditional medium to vocalise his feelings in a
straightforward speech. His search is restricted in the perimeters of North London. There is a
prevalent irony that showed a reluctance and a desire to fulfil the search of finding a partner.
Irony shows that the ending of this poem is incomplete and his search might still continuing due

From the lines of poem, “Successful, straight and solvent? I am too /Attractive Jewish

other options like dating a Jewish woman. These lines tell about his background that he is below

Along with, “perhaps bisexual woman, arty, young” (“Hearts” 8) line directly inferred
towards his desperation.
Additionally, these lines “Who knows where it may lead once we’ve begun?/Can
someone make my simple wish come true?/Do you live in North London? Is it you?”
(“Hearts” 16-19) demonstrated the eagerness and desperation to find somebody irrespective of
age, colour, religion, sexuality etc. This complicated structure leads to unresolved end and his
quest and expectations has been described in a compassionate way that involves his desire to find
somebody available in the North London. It reflected on the irony of searching love which
seemed ambiguous due to incomplete ending.
