Canada is a Civic nation: Why
A nation can be either civic or ethnic. A civic nation refers to common citizenship and
includes those who subscribe to its political creed (Msu.edu, 2019). Ethnic nation on a
different side refers to the one, which was people share the heritage and use common
language, and ethnic ancestry. If to discuss the nationality of Canada, this is to state that the
same is a civil nation, not the ethnic one. There a lead reason behind the same is that there is
a cultural diversity in this nation, which sought equal citizenship. In comparison to any other
G8 country, Canada has the greatest number of foreign-born citizens. Canada is a county that
always welcomes newcomers. Of the total Canadian population, nearly 20% represent
immigrants.
Further similar to a civic nation, Canada has language diversity. Although it has two
official languages that are French and Canada in 2011, nearly 200 languages have been
reported as a mother tongue or home language (Evans, 2019). This nation consists of people
who believe in different religions and respect for each individual's rights. Constitution of the
country provides a safeguard to the freedom of religion (Lipka, 2019). A nation does not
promote one culture over another. Further, the same treats every individual equally
irrespective of sex, gender, language, country of origin, age or other personal characteristics.
Hence considering the freedom provided by Canada to its citizens and residents, this is not
wrong to state that the same is a civic nation rather than ethnic.
