Answer to Question 3
Introduction
Intellectual property is a broad term, which describes a number of different types of
intangible assets that are created by the mind. It includes Patents, Copyrights, trademarks and
trade secrets (Bently and Sherman 2014). Trademarks are the symbols, words or images used
by a company that are used to establish the identity of a product with the customers (Crass
2014). The main purpose of trademarks is to help producers differentiate their products from
other similar products of other competitors. It is helpful in creating and altering customer
perception towards a product.
Importance of Trademarks and IP Laws
Intellectual property laws are an important tool for economic growth and act as a safety
blanket for small and medium scale industries (Sukarmijan and Sapong 2014). It helps them
protect their products and innovations. It also helps most firms in branding and advertising their
products with customers. Other benefits from intellectual properties are royalties received from
others using the product and fees received on selling the property to others (Jacob, Alexander
and Fisher 2014).
Famous Australian Trademarks
Australia has a history of more than 110 years of creating brands and trademarks that
are unique and iconic. They are popular in Australia and recognized on a worldwide basis due
to their quality (Griffith, Miller and O'Connell 2014). Two of the most famous trademarks in
Australia are Commonwealth Bank and Qantas airways. Both these organizations were
established in the 20th century and are recognized as representatives of Australia in the world.
Commonwealth’s logo is synonymous with reliability, progressiveness and a sense of
pride. The customers of the bank recognize it as a trustworthy organisation and its undertakings
are considered to be of good quality in entire Australia. The trademark of the company is highly
used in advertising and promotional campaigns of the company.
Another famous trademark is that of Qantas which contains an image of a kangaroo that
is a national symbol and is unique to Australia. This trademark is renowned in Australia and has
played a key role in elevating the company to the position of the largest domestic airline
company in the country. This has also increased the responsibility of the company to behave in
an ethical manner as it is considered to be the national representative of Australia (Maryani
2018).

Conclusion
From the above discussion, it can be concluded that while Trademarks and IP laws have
been providing protection to innovations and small industries, it is also important to ensure that
they do not become a means for larger corporations to hide their wrongdoings and take unfair
advantage of the trust placed in them by the customers. It is important to have regulations in
place, which keep a check on the usage of trademarks by companies.
