Tools of Practice Development
Practice development is an internationally recognized and sustainable approach that aims
in improving the experiences of the patients, families and staffs (Rahim 2017). It is a continuous
process that aims at bringing about the multiple transformations of individuals and the
organization as a whole. Practice development generally covers a wide range of activities that
includes changes in practice, support and health initiatives to develop and improve the standards
that include continuous quality improvement. Practice development is quite distinct in
comparison to certain change management activities that can be precisely defined with the help
of critical social theory.
The critical social theory mainly addresses the social injustices as opposed to the
individual’s problems. This theory mainly stresses on the reflective assessment and critique of
society and culture. In this context, CIP plays an important role. CIP stands for Collaboration,
inclusiveness and participation. CIP principle is therefore associated with the critical social
theory as collaboration, inclusiveness and participation largely affects the practice development
in health. Practice development mainly focuses on the methods that address the quality of care
and the advance healthcare practices (Streiner, Norman and Cairney 2015). The role of practice
development facilitators for addressing the challenges of delivering the evidences that is based
on person centered care in critical care. Critical social theory attempts to theorise the modern
social world in any of the spheres that includes psychological, cultural or economic. Since the
primary principle of practice development is to promote the patient centeredness through the

practice. The concept of community practice mainly focuses on the social nature of human

use for practice development in workplace as it involves a meaningful engagement with one’s
self. The term ‘holistic learning’ can be used to signify an approach of learning that is person
centered which follows the concept of practice development in workplace. Communities of
practice is mainly formed by people that engages in a process of collective learning associated
with human endeavor that helps in practice development in workplace.
Practice development was mainly introduced into the UK by the nursing professions in
later 1970s and in early 1980s. It was developed mainly because nursing was shifting from a
traditional approach to a practice passed approach and therefore needed a change. Practice
development and CIP mainly focuses on designing the workplace culture in a patient centered
approach based on quality, standards and evaluation.
