Introduction
Primus Hotel is one of the most excellent examples of elevated standards of hospitality
and services. Modern design philosophy and art deco glamour in this heritage sensitive hotel
offer a seamless combination of warm hospitality, fine dining and splendid experience for its
guests (Primus Hotels International 2018a).
Housekeeping is a very essential part of any hotel services, and the right housekeeping
training can have profound benefits for the staff and create better customer satisfaction.
Moreover, one can ensure better team morale, increased productivity and develop a much more
efficient housekeeping department (Premium Official News 2017). I was lucky to get a
placement at Primus Hotel Sydney for housekeeping training. The training went on for three
days, and I look at those three days as one of the most valuable experiences in my life.
I must admit that I was a bit apprehensive and nervous on the first day. However, our
team leader was well aware of the tense figures in her class, and she put each housekeeping
training student soon at ease. She began with an introduction to housekeeping services and how
these services are very important in creating a comfortable, hygienic, tidy and an aesthetically
pleasing environment for the hotel guests. These services are essential for the housekeeping staff,
those receiving the services and the image and reputation of the hotel (Hazer, Bugday. and Aslan
2011, p. 12). It is essential that the housekeeping services are planned and scheduled
systematically so as to raise the competency levels of individuals and increase work efficiency.
By the end of the day, I felt quite comfortable with my team and wonder if I would have
survived without them. We were a small group but from different cultures and backgrounds. I
knew I was getting a special opportunity to learn about the hotel industry, the housekeeping
training and develop my knowledge and skills further. I feel that my housekeeping training at

Primus Hotel made for a perfect start in my life and the experience I gained here gave me first-
hand knowledge about how the hospitality industry really works in real life.
We were divided into four teams with two members each, and the work was equally
divided to all of us. I was as excited as others and works extra hard to do the very best. Every
day started with checking the cleaning cart and ensure that it as well stocked with liquid cleaners,
tissues, white sheets and everything else which was needed. On the first day, after a brief lecture
and introduction, we were shown how to vacuum the floor and change sheets and linens. We had
to clean the toilets, refill the bath amenities, fold towels and wipe the bathtub and mirror. We
repeated the same every single day I was there. The work was demanding and tiring, but it was
fun too.
We were assigned the Deluxe Twin rooms of the Primus Hotel. When I stepped in those
rooms, I could feel the richly designed space and noticed the most exceptional modern amenities
(Primus Hotels International 2018b). There were two King Single beds in these rooms that my
partner and I had to take care of. The spacious bathroom featured a walk in shower. There was,
of course, a senior housekeeping staff appointed to help us with our training.
During the training, I realized the importance of having a good working relationship with
other team members and how to take orders from our seniors. There were times when we were
reprimanded for a task not done to perfection. However, I consider them as valuable lessons for
my training. Gradually, I learned the right way to change sheets and linens and to scrub the
bathtub till it was spotless.
What I found most challenging about the housekeeping training was to ensure that
nothing was left out and the room looked perfect and fresh at all times for the guests. Sometimes,

when I felt that I had made a perfect bed, my senior would ask me to redo it all over again
because the room still didn’t come up to her level of perfection. I learned the importance of
quality customer service for a hotel, and it is not just about greeting the guest, but creating an
exceptional experience for them and make them feel special. The guests remember those
excellent services and feel motivated to come back.
Training with the housekeeping department of the Primus Hotel was indeed a good
learning experience. I only got three days of training at the hotel and I wish I could have spent
more time. Primus Hotel is indeed a fine example for the other hotels to emulate. For the
majority of the travelers, cleanliness remains an important factor (Davies 2018). Primus Hotel
boasts of sparkling rooms, and all I can suggest is that the hotel should keep up its strict
standards for cleanliness and never compromise on those. Besides room cleanliness, it can look
for other ways to enhance its value-added services like offering personalized dry cleaning
services.
