INTRODUCTION
Catering needs of the complex market and sustaining the global business environment is
quite challenging for the organization. Moreover, these changing trends in the market impacts
the performance of the employees of the business concern irrespective of their industry. Human
resources within the organizations are compelled to show their extreme potential so as to achieve
the desired aims (Northouse, 2007). Pertaining to this, the role of leaders and managers become
vital in order to manage the resources especially the human capital. Thus, the present research
report also focuses on gaining an understanding about the leadership and management and their
varied approaches. Further, an analysis will be carried out on different skills, behavior, ability
and knowledge being required to become an effective manager.
TASK – 4
4a Explaining the difference between Management and Leadership
Talking about the leadership it is being defined as a process or quality to influence people
in order to attain pre-determined objectives. It cannot be treated same as management because it
is considered as one of the important element of management. On the other hand, management is
a discipline of managing things in the best and appropriate way. In other words, it is an art or
skill of getting things done from others (Kotterman, 2006). One of the major difference amid the
two terms is management is related with formal and organized group of people and leadership is
for both formal as well as informal groups.

4b Different Management and Leadership approaches
Democratic approach – The main objective of this approach is to create commitment and
consensus amid the workers. Each and every single member of the organization actively
participate in the decision making process (Kotter, 2001). These leaders or managers
focuses on working in team and helps the firm in achieving the desired output.
Authoritarian approach – It is being defined as the approach which focuses on providing
long term direction and vision to workers of the organizations. There is a strong emphasis
on control of leaders over administration and decisions. In simple words, there is a little
or no participation of employees in dealing with the task or activities.
Affiliative approach – The main aim of this approach is to build harmony among the
employees and the managers. This approach lay emphasis on creating emotional bonds
that helps in bringing the feeling of belongingness and bonding among the employees in
the firm.
4c Explaining how these approaches will respond to various work based situations
Democratic approach The democratic style of management and leadership is
appropriate when the leaders require a team to boy into the decisions, goals or plans. It is
also considered as the best options in the emergency situations when time is the essence
of another reason (Lamb and McKee, 2004). Further, this style is effective when there is
a steady working environment and staff members have credibility and experience.
Authoritarian approach – This type of approach is best fitted in the situation which
demands a new vision for the employees and teams due to change in the circumstances.
In such situations employees need explicit guidance from the leaders.
Affiliative approach – When there is an environment or situation of stress, Affiliative
approach is considered as best style. In simple word, when team or group needs to heal
up from trauma or when the team requires rebuilding trust among them.

5a Elucidating knowledge and skills required for an effective manager
Management and leadership skills – In order to get success, it is vital to possess skills to
set priorities, organizing, managing, directing and controlling the activities of people. It is
also important to provide coaching and communicating the objectives to workers.
Critical thinking skills – Manager should be able to solve problems logically and focus on
meaningful data to draw proper conclusions (Guang-yi, 2008).
Communication skills – A manager should be able inspire its people through creating a
compelling presentation.
Project management skills – It is quite vital for the managers to determine the roles and
responsibilities of others in order to grasp the knowledge and understanding about the
project.
Collaboration skills – Manager should be able to develop commitment and individual
performance in team. Further, he or she should understand the differences, build rapport
and should form alliance.
Information technology skills – A manager is required to have knowledge about database
management, programming, software applications and workflow.

increase the morale of the employees and increase the level of individual
performance in team or group. Further, there will be proper communication and
team mates will show positive attitude
Customers It will help in building trust in regards with the organization. The needs and
demands of the customers will meet out effectively. However, if the manager is
not competent enough it can also lead to highly dissatisfaction of customers
towards the company (Northouse, 2007)
Colleagues Cordial relations amongst each other, collaborative working and supportive
working environment with less conflicts
CONCLUSION
Thus, to conclude it can be said that managers or leaders and their approaches are
regarded as the pillars for the sustainability of the organization. A good manager with good
approaches and knowledge can take the organization to the ladder of success and growth.
