AI Summary
This report provides a comprehensive analysis of structural design principles, addressing key aspects such as statutory safety requirements, factors of safety, and the selection of steel beams based on bending moments. It explores the impact of deflection in beams on structural stability and examines various support methods, evaluating their effects on deflection in fixed structures. The report also delves into the concepts of slenderness ratio and sufficient length in column design, alongside the properties of different materials like steel, concrete, and timber used in beams and columns. Furthermore, it discusses the application of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in structural design, highlighting its benefits and advantages. The report covers detailed calculations, analysis, and the properties of timber as an alternative construction material.

Task 1B
Statutory safety requirements in structural designs:
The statutory requirements guarantees a structural person to undertake a certain construction
activity. Majorly, these requirements helps to protect the occupants in the building both in and
outside the building1 there are a number of the requirements as listed in the section below
Structural safety –structural safety deals with the reliability and risk assessments of the
buildings. Meeting of the structural safety requirements helps alleviating the risk as well as
minimizing them
Fire safety- these requirements concerns the safety of the occupants in cases of fire outbreaks,
how the outbreaks can be prevented/managed or even minimized. It requires that certain
standards are met, for instance: mass sensitization on the fire hazards2.
Resistance to contaminants, and moisture
The contaminants may be in the form of chemicals or any other toxic substances which exposes
the occupants as well as the constructors to serious health risks. Proper handling is required in
such situations to curb any associated risks.3

STRUCTURAL DESIGN 11
Resistance to sound- buildings needs to have the proper sound performance, in accordance to
the requirements of the structural design. Where sound amplification is needed, the appropriate
structural materials should be erected as well as in the case of sound attenuation4
Ventilation- ventilation requirements ensure that there is proper and constant flow of fresh air
inside the structural design. This is achieved by enacting proper spacing inside the rooms.
Sanitation and hot water safety- appropriate sanitation inside the building is essential for the
health of the occupants. The piping system for the water should in such a way that it allows for
proper flow of materials from the various facilities.
Drainage and waste disposal
Management of the wastewater and the drainage system is one of the significant procedures
towards achieving a healthy environment. Various options are needed, such as a certain order of
priority that is strictly adhered to in managing the systems5.
Heat producing appliances requirements - the heat generating appliances: fuel storage and
combustion system needs to be properly installed. By extension, this requirement is sectioned
into 5 portions, namely6 : J1 – Supply of air, J2 – Discharge of combustion waste and by-
products, J3 – Carbon monoxide warnings, J4 – Building protection, and J5 – Providing
information-

Protection from falling- most of the accidents which are experienced in buildings comes
about as a result of falls. There are various provisions which facilitates this, and hence,
appropriate measures and equipment needs to be installed to prevent these falls from
occurring7
Conservation of fuel and power-sustainable technologies which conserves energy and fuel
needs to be installed in the structural designs. For instance: adopting solar and wind energy
generating technologies.
Access to and use of buildings- entrances should allow for easy access to the buildings and
natural movement within the building system8
Glazing safety – proper glazing needs to be installed in various areas which require sufficient
amount of light
Electrical safety
A number of deaths as well occurs from electrical shocks, thus, proper electrical plan needs to be
adhered to. Further, the occupants of structural design needs to be sensitized on various electrical
safety requirements9
