Since time immemorial, women have been subjected to countless types of
institutionalized discrimination in almost every culture and have been subjected to virulent
intolerance. There is no reason why women should not be allowed to vote, enter a place of
worship, should not have access to health care and education. Women have been subjected to
social injustices that are sexist in nature since time immemorial. All forms of inequality, injustice
and intolerance should be mitigated from society. Being pro feminist refers to being committed
to challenge the oppression of women in society, to challenge binary gender injustice and
sexism. It refers to being aware of the experiences of women and focuses one’s attention to the
concerns of women (Lopez, 2014). Men who actively support the cause of women in society and
promote gender justice and support gender equality are called pro-feminist men (Lopez, 2014).
Some men who are pro-feminists are involved in activism that is political in nature. One
of the major areas of involvement is the issue of violence in men wherein they organize
workshops to combat sexual harassment in workplace, run campaigns entailing community
education and counsel men who perpetrate violence on women. They also promote the health of
men, research on masculinity, and develop and promote gender equality curriculum in
educational institutions. This work is often done in collaboration with feminists and service
centres that are related to domestic violence and incidents of rape among women (Daly, 2016).
Other men who are pro-feminists, do not participate in public campaigns but their commitment
towards women empowerment takes the form of adopting to a lifestyle that is egalitarian in
nature. They are more respectful towards women in their daily lives at home, workplace and in
general (Messner, 2016).
Men who identify themselves as pro-feminists are more understanding of the problems
faced by women. They realize that since time immemorial, women have been a subject of

oppression, injustice and inequality and they work towards improving the situation. Men who are
pro-feminists in nature believe that both men and women should be treated equally. Women
should have access to jobs and the plethora of other opportunities that are given to men. Pro-
feminist men want a society that does not discriminate anyone based on gender, caste, class,
religion or any other factors. They propagate a just and an equal society (Messner, 2016).
Men have an important role to play in the alteration of gender relations that was started
by women’s movements. Pro-feminist men are an integral part of this process of transformation
in the minds of individuals and transformation in society. By taking up causes on gender equality
and gender justice as a commitment as well as a political goal, by trying to bring about a change
in society and in the mindset of people, pro-feminist men make a difference and create a better
world for both men and women.
