TITLE: “To analyse the problems encountered by the spouse of the patient with
dyslexia”
INTRODUCTION
Dyslexia is identified as a difficulty in learning to read. It can be associated with hereditary
factors or some other factors that influence the development of brain of an individual. It is a
specific learning disability in an individual which is neuro biological in origin (Alias and Dahlan,
2015). The individual with dyslexia is not able to recognise word accurately and have poor
decoding abilities. Its severity very from mild to severe and shows signs like low self-esteem,
depression, behavioural issues, unmotivated etc. This report is based on the topic “To analyse the
problems encountered by the spouse of the patient with dyslexia”. It covers background, aim
and objectives of research along with literature review section. Apart from this, it also includes
different research methodologies along with time table for proposed research plan.
BACKGROUND/ PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
Dyslexia is referred as a learning disability that affects the skills included in fluent and
accurate word reading and spelling. The main feature of dyslexia indicates complexities in
phonological awareness, verbal processing speed and verbal memory. The main purpose of
conducting the study is to analyse the issues encountered by spouse of patient with dyslexia. This
research helps in understanding about the dyslexia syndrome and its causes and symptoms
(DiBlasio, Hester, and Belcher, 2014). Also helps in determining the different types of dyslexia
that an individual may suffer from. Apart from this, the issues are identified that are encountered
by spouse. All this will help in gaining deep insights over the topic.

LITERATURE REVIEW
It is vital part of every research and dissertation that facilitates better information and
analysis of various secondary sources of information to deep and better understanding about a
specific research topic (Mulcahy, 2016). Use of various online articles and authentic journals are
made to get better understanding about curette research topic a description and discussion of
which is provided below:
To evaluate about dyslexia as a learning disability and its causes and symptoms
Dyslexia is basically a learning disability especially related with reading. According to the
view point Guinevere Eden, 2020, people who are suffering with dyslexia mainly have trouble
whole reading at a good pace and also found it difficult to read without mistakes. Beside this, a
great difficulty is faced by these people along with a hard time while reading comprehension,
spelling and other writing work but these difficulties and challenges mainly dose not creates or
lead any problem with intelligence of suffered individuals. Thus, it can be evaluated that
individuals with dyslexia typically face trouble while reading a content fluently thus, they read
slowly and also makes mistakes in reading (Chan, 2018). But, the diseases of dyslexia do not
create much impact how well these people comprehend what they have read. And also they have
no issue and problem understanding what other people has read and spoke (Raghuram, Hunter
2
Document Page
and Waber, 2019). The other skills and learning competencies that might get affected by the
disease of Dyslexia consist of Reading comprehension, spelling problem, writing issues along
with understanding and doing maths. Beside this, it could also be evaluated that some people
also believes that dyslexia is a problem that affects and cause vision issues like of reversing
letters or writing backwards but this theory and fact about dyslexia is not correct and dyslexia is
mainly associated with an issue related with reading language (Shanthi, 2014).
Further, with respect to the information provided by Dan Brennan, 2019, Dyslexia is
basically taken as a learning disorder that affects and hamper the ability to read, spell, write, and
speak. The Kids who have it and suffering from Dyslexia are often smart and more hardworking
but they have trouble and difficulty in connecting the letters they see while reading thus, not able
to the sounds those letters make which also lead to slow reading capability and understanding
language. Further it has been also evaluated by Dan Brennan that the main cause of Dyslexia is
associated with genes and thus this disease and disorder often runs in families from parents to
child. Further, it has been also find out that the key sign and main symptom of dyslexia includes
having trouble in decoding words that is mainly associated with the ability of matching letters to
create the sounds and proper punctuation of the word. Beside this, it has been also founded
through various research that the kids suffering from Dyslexia could also face struggle with often
more basic skill and competencies called as phonemic awareness which is basically an ability of
recognizing the sounds in words and the trouble with phonemic awareness are easily show up at
as early as preschool days of a child (Major, 2017). Further, some of the main signs of dyslexia
could also connected with emotions and behaviour of individuals as it has been evaluated that
mainly people who are suffering with dyslexia might like to avoid reading, both out loud as well
as to themselves. Further, the individuals who are suffering from Dyslexia might get anxious or
frustrated while reading thus, theses emotional acts are also taken as key symptoms of Dyslexia.
Further, as per the opinion of David Perlstein, 2018, the main cause of Dyslexia is associated by
impairment in the brain's ability in order to process phonemes (the smallest units of speech that
make words different from each other). Further, the disease of Dyslexia does not result and
related with vision or hearing problems and is mainly due to mental retardation or any kind of
brain damage and not form a part of lack of intelligence. Further, possible cause of Dyslexia is
also evaluated that consists of Genes and heredity along with some Brain anatomy and activity
(Singer, 2015). It has been find out from analysis of various research work that Dyslexia mainly
3
Document Page
runs into families and Around 40 percent of siblings of an individual’s suffering with dyslexia
struggle with reading along because of genes linked to problems with reading and processing
language. Further many medical research has also resulted in the conclusion that Brain imaging
studied and design have shown brain differences among the various individuals with and without
dyslexia that directly lead to impact on those skills which are required to read and sound words,
and recognizing what actually the written words look like.
Thus, it could be evaluated on the basis of above discussion that Dyslexia is basically a
difficulty in learning to read and its main cause are associated with hereditary factors or other
factors that affect brain development (Campbell-McBride, 2018). The symptoms of Dyslexia
consist of difficulty in decoding words associated with the reduced ability of matching letters for
proper punctuation of word.
To assess different types of dyslexia from which an individual may suffer
Valencia Higuera, 2018 has provided information Dyslexia is mainly associated with
language-based learning disability that hampers the reading and language skills of an individuals.
It has been classified or bifurcated into various types according the specific disability and issues
seen in a patient in accordance with their age and symptoms. The evaluation and assessment of
different types of dyslexia from which an individual may suffer is provided below:
Phonological Dyslexia- The individuals suffering from the phonological dyslexia found it
difficult to have proper phonemic awareness that basically includes the disability and difficulty
in recognizing individual letter a sounds in a word and then blend those sounds into a word.
Thus, for people who suffer from this types of dyslexia found it more difficult to break words
into syllables and blending and pronouncing those letters and sounds to make the word (Buele
and et. al., 2020).
Surface Dyslexia- This type of dyslexia is mainly related with inability to read and
recognise words that are basically spelled differently from the way they are usually pronounced.
Sometimes Surface Dyslexia is also referred and known as visual dyslexia because of the fact
that individuals suffering with this condition mainly have difficulty and issues in recognizing
words by sight thus, not able to read and recognise that words properly but still it is also a fact
that dyslexia do not involve a problem with vision or eyesight it is basically only a learning issue
(Halligan and Robertson, 2014).

Beside this, with respect to the view point of Manpreet Singh, 2018, the main types of
dyslexia from which an individual may suffer are as follows:
Speed/Naming Deficit Dyslexia-In this type of dyslexia individuals find it difficult and time
consuming to recognition of letters and numbers because their brain took longer times to process
that information that finally resulted as issues of slower reading time.
Visual Dyslexia- The symptoms of visual Dyslexia mainly include trouble in reading and
remembering because of this types of dyslexia. Thus, it can be evaluated that Visual Dyslexia
basically impacts the visual processing part of brain because of which patient of Visual Dyslexia
does not receive the full picture of what the eyes are seeing. Thus, visual dyslexia create severe
implications and negative impact on learning to form letters and also lead to difficulty in learning
and forming spelling, which is basically a process of remembering the correct letter sequences to
form a words (Elder and Gole, 2019).
Thus, it can be evaluated from above discussion that the diseases of Dyslexia is categorised
into various types on the basis of specify difficulty and inefficiency. The various types of
Dyslexia consist of Phonological Dyslexia which is mainly associated with difficulty and lack of
phonemic awareness that makes it difficult to recognise a word. The other type is Surface
Dyslexia that is mainly associated with inability to read differently pronounced words. Beside
this, Speed/Naming Deficit Dyslexia and Visual Dyslexia are also the main types of Dyslexia
which are commonly seen in individuals and hamper their learning and reading ability.
To assess the problem which are encountered by the spouse of the patient with dyslexia.
Dyslexia is a disease associated with learning and reading disability of an individual’s thus,
many issues encountered by the families and spouse of an individual’s who is a patient of
Dyslexia. As per the opinion of Michael Ryan, 2020, dyslexia are caused by biological factors
that affects the learning, speaking and reading ability of an individual’s that might lead to a
feeling of discouraging and frustrating in the spouse of patient. It has been also founded in many
cases that dyslexics or patient of dyslexia makes efforts to hide their dyslexia which would only
get disclosed with enhanced their problems and difficulties (Kirby, 2019). The main issues which
are faced dyslexic partners of a non-dyslexic individuals includes specific problems with
communication ranging from an inability and difficulty in reading social clues along with
difficulty in pronouncing and reading long multi-syllabic words that lead to coming up with a
bizarre things and sound in conversation. Thus, the disease of dyslexia leads to a feeling of
5

panicking and frustrating in spouse of patient suffering from dyslexia along with the fact that
daily routines of both patients and their spouses are greatly interrupted that includes doing things
in the wrong manner that is basically perceived as abnormal and socially inapt/handicapped in
the society that could be disturbing or insulting for spouse of patient of dyslexia (Rollins, 2014).
Further, Lisa Millraney, 2020, has provided information that the patient of Dyslexic mainly
faces the lone issue that makes it more difficult for their spouses to understand their inner
feelings and emotions. Furthers, it has been also evaluated that Non-dyslexic partners and
spouses of patient of dyslexia also find it surprising and exhausted by the fact that how much
their dyslexic partners are relied on them and other to perform daily routines to survive like
spouses feels frustrated by inability of their dyslexic partner to do simple tasks like writing a
shopping list or taking a telephone message along with paying bills on time as it is quite difficult
for their dyslexic partner to read and learn things properly to make sense of this phenomenon.
Further, in accordance with view point Ritter and Ilakkuvan, (2019) it has been also founded
that the patient who are suffering from dyslexic mainly have Fading Confidence, Motivation and
Self-Esteem that make it more difficult for their spouses to maintain a balance with them and
motivated them to live a normal life. Apart from this, the spouses of patient of dyslexia also lead
to many social problems in life of both married partners which are mainly associated with left
untreated due to low self-esteem, behaviour problems along with feeling of anxiety and
aggression that can lead to an issue of withdrawal from friends and other family members.
Further, the inability to read and comprehend can also create hindrance in reaching the potential
goals of a patient of dyslexic that lead to feeling of depression and un-satisfaction in the spouses
and patient that hampers their emotional balance, relationship and behaviour (Shaywitz and
Shaywitz, 2020). Beside this, dyslexia also lead to social immaturity in patient that can make
them awkward in social situation and face difficult in understanding social clues along with
trouble in finding the right words and stammer that could be frustrating and awkward for the
spouse of patient with dyslexia.
Inclusion Criteria
The inclusion criteria for above stated literature review includes the use of only most resent and
authentic sources of information thus, only those articles and journals are included which are not
older than 5 years. This inclusion criterion is helpful in maintain the authenticity and reliability
of collected data and also overcome the issue of use of out dated or any past information.
6

Further, use of only those articles and online journals are made that have proper copyrights in
order to ensures authenticity and correctness of collected data to maintain the viability and
quality of current literature review and its analysis (Levinson, 2019).
Exclusion Criteria
In this research, the data of more than past five years older is not taken into consideration in
order to maintain the accuracy, validity and reliability of research. Apart from this, the articles or
journals which are not copyrighted are also not taken into consideration so as to maintain
authenticity of research. At the time of conducting literature review, there are various factors that
will make the study ineligible, those factors are not included in the review. In addition to this, a
systematic review is necessary in the protocol as it declines the risk of biasness, ensures
uniformity among the team of research, increases transparency and ultimately makes the review
systematic. So, for conducting review in systematic way, the criteria of exclusion are considered.
All the data on the topic is reviewed from authentic websites to ensure authenticity of research
outcomes (de Salis and Augustine, 2018).
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research methodology forms a very crucial part of research which helps in completing each
activity in systematic way. It involves specific procedures that a researcher utilized to determine,
select and analyses data on topic. For a researcher, it is very necessary to adopt appropriate
research methods in order to carry out research effectively. Research methodology administers a
path to researcher to carry out activities properly and present the results appropriately. Research
onion framework is appropriate to define different methodologies of research that can be used in
the study (Mackey and Gass, 2015). Different methodologies that can be utilized in the research
are mentioned below:
Method
Research philosophy: two types of philosophies are considered in the research including
positivism interpretivism research philosophy. When a hypothesis is developed in the research
then positivism philosophy is utilized that can be tested. On the other hand, when meaningful
nature of participation in life of an individual is emphasized then interpretivism philosophy is
used. In this study, the researcher utilizes interpretivism philosophy because of its high

dependence emphasizing and understanding the meaning of individual's actions to draw valid
and reliable conclusion of research.
Research approach: It is associated with collection, analysis and interpretation of data by
utilizing inductive and deductive research approaches. Based on literature review, development
of hypothesis is done in deductive approach. Whereas, the approach that is concerned with
observations and is use by researcher for creation of new approach is termed as inductive
approach. In relation to this investigation, the researcher uses inductive research approach as it is
the appropriate methodology to carry out investigation systematically based on subjectivity that
supports in achieving effective outcomes of study (Kumar, 2019).
Research choice: there are two types of research designs that can be utilized by researcher
while performing a particular study. These methods provide priorities to values, viewpoints and
perceptions of humans that supports in gathering detailed data over a particular topic. These
choices include qualitative and quantitative research methods. Numerical data is collected in the
quantitative research method whereas, non-numerical data is gathered in qualitative research that
involves interpretive and naturalistic approach to subject matter. In relation to this study,
qualitative research method is utilized in which the analysis and interpretation of reality is done.
The reason of selection of this method is that it provides detailed information regarding the
human behavior by obtaining data through open ended communication.
Research Strategy: It is the strategy or a systematic plan of action that render researcher
with the path and make them able to carry out study systematically within stipulated time frame
so as to develop quality outcomes. Systematic literature review, survey, questionnaire,
interviews, experimental research, case study, action research etc. are various types of research
strategy which can be utilized by the investigator in research. All these strategies will help
researcher in gathering enough amount of data to draw valid outcomes of research. In relation to
this investigation, interview method is selected so that adequate information on the topic can be
collected (Wiek and Lang, 2016). This research is based on the topic “To analyse the problems
encountered by the spouse of the patient with dyslexia”. Interview method is utilized as it is an
appropriate method to collect information from the respondents accurately.
Time horizon: it is the starting and completion time of study. Cross sectional and
longitudinal are the two types of horizons research. In cross sectional time horizon, single point
of time observations is made. On the other hand, observations related to specific variable which
8

is available for quarters, months, years or days. In this study, cross sectional is use so as to
measure individual aspects at a time point.
Data collection
It is a method through which the researcher will gather data on a topic. For collecting
data over a particular topic, relevant sources are utilized for finding out the answers on a specific
issue. Primary and secondary are the two types of data collection methods that are utilized in the
research for gathering data or information of a particular topic. In primary data collection
method, first hand data collected by the investigator through using different tools and techniques
like questionnaires, interviews, survey etc. The data or information gathered through this method
is never utilized before and the reliability and authenticity of data is more. On the other hand,
secondary data collection method is a way to gather the data or information which is already
published previously (Taherdoost, 2016). The sources which are utilized for gathering secondary
data includes books, journals, government records, newspapers, previously published articles etc.
This research is based on the topic “To analyse the problems encountered by the spouse of the
patient with dyslexia”. And for collecting data on this topic, both primary as well as secondary
data collection methods are utilize in the research. Interview method is used to gather primary
data and secondary data is collect through using sources like books and journals. The questions
which are utilizing to conduct interview for gathering primary data are mentioned below:
Interview questions
Q 1) How dyslexia affect the life of an individual who suffer from this disorder?
Q 2) What can be the main reason of dyslexia according to you?
Q 3) How the situation of dyslexia can be control by the spouse of a patient?
Q 4) Which type of dyslexia harms the learning disability of an individual the most?
Q 5) What difficulty that an individual feels the most who suffer from dyslexia?
Q 6) Which issue is encountered the most by the spouse of the patient with dyslexia?

Sampling
Sampling is concerned with the process of collecting sample size by utilising statistical
analysis for selecting predetermined number of respondents from the overall population
(Mukhopadhyay and Gupta, 2014). The type of sampling method is determined on the basis of
the analysis that is being performed. Probability and nonprobability sampling are the two types
of sampling methods that can be utilised in study. The chances of each individual of getting
select are equal in probability sampling method. On the other hand, the selection chances are not
equal in non-probability sampling. It does not provide all the people with equal opportunities to
get selected. In this investigation, for selecting the sample size, probability sampling method is
utilised by investigator (Habib, Pathik and Maryam, 2014). In this, simple random sampling
method is utilising in which the observers are selected randomly and all the respondents have
equal chances of being selected. 20 respondents are selected for taking interviews by asking
them several questions which are set above. These respondents are the individuals who was
suffered from dyslexia in past or whose family member is suffering from dyslexia.
Outline of study (Design and Analysis)
This research is based on the topic “To analyse the problems encountered by the spouse of
the patient with dyslexia”. This research covers various parts including introduction, literature
review, research methodology, data analysis and interpretation, reflection, recommendation and
conclusion. All these are the crucial part of research that helps in carrying out research
systematically. In the introduction part, aim, objectives, research questions, are included.
