INTRODUCTION
Tourism is an activity of investing time in exploring new places and it also helps
individuals in gaining knowledge about different cultures & history. This essay explains meaning
of Tourism. Further, this essay elaborate various problems faced by tourism and negative impact
on tourism by taking example of different countries.
MAIN BODY
For providing facilities to visitors tourism business is operated. Tourism organisation or
sector operate business of travel & tours by providing various facilities such as accommodation,
foods & beverages, travelling and transportation. Activity of tourism is a hobby of individuals
according to which they loves to visit new places. Different types of tourism activities are done
such as Pilgrimage, Medical Tourism, Sport Tourism and business tourism. Tourism is an
important element as it highly contributes towards development of economy. Scope of tourism is
increasing due to introduction of advances technology, development of new modes of travelling
and emergence of globalisation(Light, 2016.).
Tourism has a positive & negative impact on culture, society, economy and environment
of different countries. Beside various positive effect of tourism it also has various negative
impact. Various Dilemmas are faced by visitors while exploring different places which are
discussed below-
Understanding and managing tourism impacts: It is more important top manage &
understand impact of tourism on various factors such as economic growth and profitability .
Further, it is very difficult to analyse impact of tourism as m,any sectors and industries are
contributing towards economic growth of country. Tourism sector does not grow if it is not able
analyse impact. Thus, this dilemma is also faced by companies operating under travel and
tourism sectors(Hall and Lew, 2009).
Establishment of OYO & Airbnd- Introduction of various agencies which provides
accommodation facilities has a negative impact on tourism. As Airbnb, OYO and other business
who are providing same facilities are operating their business in local streets and in the main
markets of cities. These hotels provide services 24 hours with these local people of that area gets
disturbed. Because, of these government are not allowing these hotels to operate their business in
local area which in turn affects tourism as they faces problem.

For Example- If a Visitor wants to explore streets of Greece and his hotel is located out of
city than it requires much cost in travelling from hotel to city. Thus, this has an negative impact
of tourism. This also has an effect on budget of tourist(Taylor and Walker, 2018).
Poverty- When visiting different countries or cities tourist also pass through villages
which are surrounded by individuals & children's who are poor. These people irritate tourist by
pulling their shirts and ask for money so that they can buy foods. Further, it is also has an
negative impact as it is difficult of making travel decision. Travellers have to make decisions as
whether they explore these villages or not(Chen, Liu and Wang, 2017).
This situation is faced by visitors in India & Cambodia. As poverty level is high in both
of these countries. For Example- In India children's and old aged individuals are sitting outside
the temples and begging for money. This has a negative impact on Pilgrimage Tour.
For Eliminating this dilemma visitor has to take some extra money with so they can
donate to them or they have to bring some valuable things such as food & stationary items for
children's(Lang, 2016).
Capturing Portraits- Many tourist take pictures of historical & cultural things such as
forts, temples and other monuments. Tourist also post this pictures on social media sites and
many individuals do negative comment on them which negatively affects culture and history of
country. Further, Government of the countries cannot impose restrictions on them and if
government impose restriction than it decreases interest of individuals in visiting these type of
places.
Individuals also takes pictures of old cities or individuals who wears clothes of different
culture and for clicking their picture they are required to pay money to them. This problem is
faced by visitors who are visiting cities and villages of India and Thailand. As both of these
countries are having different cultures and history.
For Example- If a visitor visiting India & wants to click picture of a old man who are
wearing dhoti & kurta and has wrinkled face. Visitor asked to old man for a picture and he
refused than tourist need to pay him for the picture(Wallb and Mathieson, 2006).
Many places in Thailand does not allow tourist to bring camera which has an negative
impact on tourism. Because, individuals who loves to explore and making collection of their

travelling experience are not interested in exploring those places(AlBugami and Bel'eed‐Akkari,
2018).
Environment- Tourist visit places which are different form their home town thus,
environment of these places arr also different which affects decision making of tourist. For
Example- A visitor of Switzerland does not wants to explore cities of Australia as temperature of
Australia is high. Thus, this reduces number of tourist in Australia which in turn effects
economic situation of country as tourism largely contributes in development of economy.
Further, various countries suffers from heavy rainfall for a period of time which in turn
reduces tourism for that particular season. Adverse environment situation reduces number of
visitors and which in turn affects business of travel & tourism industries in a negative manner.
Carbon Footprint also has an adverse impact on tourism as aviation is exploiting
environment by generating 5% global carbon emission and for shifting from one country to
another air-plan services are needed. Further, many countries are not able to offer environmental
friendly services to tourist which is an dilemma for tourist as they need to take actions to protect
the environment. This in turn results in decreased number of tourism(Dann, 2017).
Many countries which violate Human Rights such as engaging in harming other
countries by doing bomb blast and abusing women's and running their country by doing
corruptions.
For Example- Recently a news comes that Pakistan does a terrorist attack on India with
this news many visitors does not want to visit cities of Pakistan which in turn negatively effects
tourism. Like this many other countries also violating human rights. Beside, this some countries
does not allow visitors of other regions which also affects tourism.
Restriction by Government- Government of different countries formulate different rules
& regulations for tourism sector which affects visitors as they are not aware about guidelines of
all countries. Tourism faces problem in collecting Visa as many countries need much formalities
which in turn reduces interest of visitors.
Tourist who are visiting different country need to understand all the rules of that country.
Further, they are required to exchange currency of their country with the country they are going
to visit.

For Example- If a individual who are an Indian Resident and wants to visit places of
United Kingdom than expenses of that visitor is increases as there is a huge difference in
exchange rate of both countries. This effect spendings of Tourism as they does not want to
invest much mount than their budget.
Different Culture have different dress codes, vales and ethics which affects Tourism
as they need to follow values and culture of country which they are visiting. For Example If
some individuals from china are visiting religious places of United Kingdom than they need to
follow rules and ethics of UK. This is difficult for them. Further, use of different language by
different countries also has an negative impact as it provides communication gap. Tourist are
unable to communicate with members of country they are visiting with this they face a problem
in finding accommodation and in visiting different places.
Economic Situation changes with the change in places. Prices, income level and
consumption level of countries and places are different. For Example prices of hotels are high in
tourist places which affects spendings of individuals. Individuals who travel more often spend
their money on the basis of their budget thus, they do not visit places which are expensive. With
this tourist are not able to explore place of their interest. Further change in exchange rate, interest
and situation of inflation in an countries economy reduces number of travellers so this adversely
affects tourism.
Adventures Places- Tourist specially youngsters like to get experience and try places
which are offering services such as riding, trekking, para gliding, bunji jumping and other
adventures activities. But this adventures services may cause injuries to health and also causes
death. Operator of these businesses does not give surety to customers related to their life. So,
with these uncertainties individuals does not like to visit these places with this customers in
tourism sector are declining(Tribe and Liburd, 2016).
Further, various places such as temples and forts which are build thousand years ago
attracts travellers as they are very popular. But, number of these places are declining day by day
this also affect interest of tourist and thus, it negatively affects tourism.
Animal Experience- It is a hobby of individuals to explore wild life centuries as they
love animals. Tourist takes pictures with animals and swim with dolphins but they are not aware
about how to deal with animals this problem also affects tourism.

Diversification and sustainable development in Southern Europe
Business of tourism is developing in Europe as many companies and agencies are
providing facilities of accommodation, food, travel and other ancillary services related travel.
Further, GDP of economy of Europe is also increasing due to increase in business of tourism
which further help in enhancement of income level of citizens(Bramwell, 2004).
CONCLUSION
This essay outlined different problems faced by Tourism. Further, this essay concluded
negative impact of these problems on Tourism.
