Introduction
IKEA is Swedish-found multinational company that has been famous for designing and
selling ready-to-assemble furniture. Although as a famous global company IKEA has a strong
sense of corporate responsibility, unfortunately for IKEA some of their products are not safe and
has even resulted in the death of several children. In various social media sites IKEA had put
recalls for its defective products. In this research report these recalls would be discussed briefly.
Research and Analysis
There had been almost 23 product recalls by IKEA done on its product recalls page.
These products vary from changing table/chest, lamps, bicycle, dishwashers, gas hobs,
extendable tables, bat capes, swings, canopies, junior beds and various food items. Each of these
items was put in the recall list by IKEA on their page because there have been incidents where
these products were proved to be hazardous to the safety of many. There even had been reports
of death of children found trapped under chests and drawers. There had been several safety
recalls made by IKEA over the past few years. The products that have been most importantly
recalled are a beach chair that has the risk of fall related injuries and further risks of finger
entrapment and fingertip amputation. The second product recalled by IKEA is their range of
floor and table lamps in which damaged wirings have been found. However there has not been
any report of serious injury apart from minor shocks. The children’s safety gates are reported to
be opening unexpectedly and resulting in children falling down the stairs (Injurylawyer.com,
2017).

Further there have been cases where children have died as the dressers or chests and
drawers have fallen over them. According to the reports of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety
Commission at least 8 children have died and almost 60 children have been injured by the IKEA
dressers and chests (The Washington Post, 2017).
The words about the recall were first announced in June 2016. Since then there has been
‘extensive communication’ campaign conducted by the company throughout social media. The
recalls have also been posted on the company’s website, television and print media. The
company further emailed almost 13 million people informing them about the recall (The
Independent, 2017). The company connects with its clients through social media like facebook,
instagram, twitter and pinterest.
Summary
In this paper a detailed research has been done in relation to product recalling by IKEA
and the reasons behind each product’s recall. In this research further discussions have been made
in accordance with the injuries leading to the decisions of the product recalling.
