Background- The researchers have elaborated on the fact that scientific advances and
technological progress in the modern world have brought about several changes in culture,
social circle, lifestyle and communication of people. They have duly recognised the concept
of generation beneficial, for identifying human communities that are typically born during the
same period and have alike experiences. This is in accordance with the fact that
dissimilarities exist in the perceptions, beliefs, values, behaviours, and attitudes of people
belonging to different generations. The research background also illustrated that with an
increase in the proportion of people from a particular generation Y, there arise several
conflicts between generation Y and generation X. The researchers also recognised the need of
gaining an insight and effectively managing conflicts amid dissimilar generations. The
researchers also stated that gaining a sound understanding of intergenerational variations of
nursing professionals who are imperative to the functioning of healthcare teams, facilitates
assessing their levels of professional commitment and also determines the ways by which
they are able to effectively manage stress. Nursing staff have been considered the primary
contributors of patient care since they are in in direct association with their clients who seek
medical help.
Research aim and hypothesis- The primary aim of the researchers was to explore
stress management and professional commitment among nursing professionals, belonging to
different generation.

Methodology- The research was based on a descriptive and cross-sectional design and
conducted in a state hospital located in Burdur. The researchers employed the strategy of
convenience sampling, whereby participants for a research are selected based on their
proximity and accessibility to the experimenters. This sampling procedure facilitated the
recruitment of 175 nurses, while 25 refused participation. Following determination of the
eligibility of the participants, based on pre-determined inclusion and exclusion criteria, face-
to-face interviews were conducted to explain the purpose and advantages of the research. The
demographic measurements were conducted by seeking answers for eight questions on socio-
demographic characters. This was followed by usage of the Professional Commitment Scale
that contained 26 items and thee sub-scales that included willingness for making effort,
maintaining membership, and belief in values and goals. Scores of total scale were
standardized from 26-104, and 0.89 reliability coefficient was determined. The 30-item
Coping Strategies Inventory (CSI) was also used for assessing coping mechanisms used by
nurses to overcome stress. This tool comprised of five sub-scales that focused on different
aspects like self-confidence approach, submissive approach, helpless approach, optimistic
approach, and social support approach. The researchers computed the total scores by adding
the items and dividing them by total item number in each component. Descriptive statistical
analysis was conducted by using SPSS 17.0 software package and p value of <0.05 had been
considered significant by the researchers. In the data analysis, chi-square, correlation, and
student t-test were conducted.

Appropriateness of the methods- The method of convenience sampling for recruiting
research participants was not appropriate for the study owing to the fact that it provided
information about a specific group of intergenerational nurses from the state hospital, and not
the wider population, thereby leading to bias in the data. There was a possibility of sampling
error as well and resulted in difficulty in obtaining generalized conclusions about the research
participants. Use of the Professional Commitment Scale was in accordance to the research
aims and objectives since it helps in the determination of loyalty, desire to remain in the
profession, responsibility, and accountability among the nurses, towards their job. The sub-
scales and questions present in the scale also facilitated assessing the presence of positive
professional behaviour among the nursing staff, belonging to different generations, thus
comparing the intergenerational differences. Furthermore, use of the Coping Strategies
Inventory (CSI) was another correct procedure, which in turn can be accredited to the fact
that people frequently react in diverse ways when faced with a problematic, challenging, or
demanding concern in life. Hence, the items present in CSI helped the nursing staff to
respond to how often they cope stress in a manner that is presented in the scale. Additionally,
recording socio-demographic characteristics at baseline facilitated correlating them to the
differences in results, at the end of data collection. Conduction of descriptive statistical
analysis also simplified representation of results in the form of summaries about the measures
and samples, which in turn formed the foundation of all quantitative data.
Result presentation- The researchers did not present any data obtained after

the demographic characteristics of the nursing professionals that included information on
marital status, generation, gender, educational attainment, professional duty, employment

nurses belonging to different generations (X and Y), and their scores on the Professional
Commitment Scale and CSI were presented in the second and third tables, respectively.

Hence, the researchers concluded that Y generation nurses were more willing to maintain
their membership, and X generation nurses were more self-confident in coping mechanisms.
