Personal Nursing Philosophy
My philosophy of nursing aims to provide care to my patient as a whole that is providing
a holistic care approach that would take care of the physical, mental and the spiritual aspect of
the patient.
In the first year of my bachelor of nursing, I have learnt about many nursing theorists,
among which, `I can associate myself with Hildegard Peplau. According to Hildeguard Pepelau,
the therapeutic association amongst the client and the nurse should be the center of attention than
being the patient to be the sole unit of attention (Deane & Fain 2016). I believe that,
development of curative association between a client and a caregiver is feasible by effective
communication and establishment of rapport between the nurse and the patient.
Being a nurse, I believe, that I follow and incorporate the graduate attributes of nursing.
Two of the most important attribute , which I try to incorporate in my nursing practice is
provision of a person centered care and communication and collaboration with the patient, their
family and other health care professionals.
One of the core elements of nursing to me is the provision of a Client- centered care. The
core norm to give a person centered care are collaborative working with the patient and advocate
for their basic rights and individuality (Halcomb et al. 2016). Patient should be respected and
ensured that they are being valued and they are safe in our hands (Brummel‐Smith et al. 2017).
Our personal beliefs and views can be challenged by our patient’s views or views of their
families, but we should always understand that incorporation of holism is important to provide a
person centered care to the patient (Papathanasiou, Sklavou & Kourkouta 2013).

Professional Nursing standards
Professional nursing standards are used for providing framework for the development of
clinical competency. The professional standards for the nurses describes a competent level in
each of the phase of the nursing process. The nursing standards are important, as they escort our
clinical practice. These act as assessment tool for the nurse plus the colleagues for ensuring
clinical proficiency and safety. They are helpful in the preparation of the clinical competency
checklist for an employer and a specific unit. Main rationale for following a professional
standard is to ensure that a high level of quality nursing care is promoted. Each of the country
have their separate professional standards for nursing (Arnold & Boggs 2019). Although there is
a list of professional standards that has to be followed by all the nursing students, but here I
would discuss on how I would comply with the standard 2 of NMBA. Standard 2 states, that
nurses are accountable to deliver a safe, suitable and a receptive quality of nursing facilities.
Establishing a therapeutic relationship with the patient, is one of the vital process in the recovery
process of the patients (Brummel‐Smith et al. 2017). This curative relationship occurs with the
patient when nurse and the patient come together in the moment that results in healing and
harmony. Additionally, I also believe that establishment of collaborative relationship with the
peers and the other members of the heath care team is also essential to provide a person centered
care. According to Parnell (2014) a collaborative and teamwork requires a mix of the problem
solving and communication skills for working towards a common goal. Being a nurse, I am well
aware of the fact that , I will have to work in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team,
where I should possess appropriate leadership skills to cope up with the team.
I intend to develop my skills of establishing a therapeutic relationship by practicing
certain gestures and body languages. Once a patient has been admitted, it is necessary to

introduce ourselves to the patient and using her name while talking with him. Active learning as
essential element of the development of a curative relationship (Papathanasiou, Sklavou &
Kourkouta 2013). Nurses should be well aware of the concerns of the patients by restating what
he had verbalized. Maintenance of eye contact is another step towards the development of a
therapeutic relationship. I will ensure that, I will maintain the professional boundaries, while
caring from different kinds of patients. Some of patients will require more therapeutic touch, like
holding of hands or hugging, while some of them prefer no touching.
As a nurse, I believe, that I can assist my patient in achieving synchronization in body,
mind and the spirit during engagement in a curative relation with the patient, incorporating
caring behavior. It is a win-win situation where, I and my patient can experience recovery by
sharing the moment. This is how, I will incorporate the NMBA professional standards in my
clinical practice.
