At present I am studying Bachelors of Nursing in the University “X”. I was an assurance
nurse in Nepal. Apart from studying, I am also serving as an AIN nurse. I love exploring to new
places and listening to music is my passion. My professional skills include: conducting a
comprehensive physical assessment, medication administration and monitoring of vital signs of
the patients followed by documentation of the patients records. However, I am an introvert and

Personal Nursing Philosophy
My personal nursing philosophy is to deliver holistic care to my patients with the help of
person centred approach and this falls in accordance to the UTS Graduate Nursing attributes.
While practising person-centred care approach, I will focus on both the mental and physical
well-being of the patient. Feo and Kitson (2016) are of the opinion that focus over the mental
(psychological) and physical (physiological) aspect of the patient are the two principal
parameters for developing person-centred care. The procuring of the person-centred care to my
patient will help me to improve the overall health outcome and thereby helping to decrease the
length of stay at the hospital and overall cost of care.
My second nursing philosophy as per the UTS graduate nursing attribute is to execute
communication and collaboration with my patient. Hussey and Kennedy (2016) stated that one of
the key features of the person-centred care approach is to communicate fluently with the patient
in order to highlight the clinical priority. Since I am shy of public speaking, I am planning to
refine my effective communication skills under the training of a registered yet experienced
nursing professional. My training aspect will encompass both verbal and non-verbal
communication skills. Training in the verbal communication skill will help me to excel in my
vocabulary. Whereas, training in the non-verbal communication skills will help me to maintain
proper body language while communication and maintaining eye contact. Maintaining eye-
contact promotes active listening and will help to facilitate collaborative practice. I will also
appreciate the value of the overall communication in order to negotiate and generate shared
understanding with the patient.

Professional Nursing Standard
Standard 2: Engages in therapeutic and professional relationships
Among the prevailing nursing standards enlisted by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of
Australia (NMBA), that one that attracts my main attention is standard 2. Standard 2 promotes
development of the effective therapeutic relationship with the patient by executing the effective
communication skills. As per my understanding from the NMBA nursing professional standards,
the development of the therapeutic relationships with the patient will help in the development of
trust. Richardson, Percy and Hughes (2015) are of the opinion that the development of trust is
important among the nurse and patient’s relationship as it helps in procuring the person-centred
care approach while increasing the scope of the informed decision making and collaborative care
approach. In relation in the development of the professional relationships with the patients,
NMBA states that a nurse must stay culturally competent while developing therapeutic
relationship with the patient. In order to develop or engage in therapeutic relationship with the
patient, I will respect the dignity and diversity in the ethical and spiritual values of the patient. In
doing so, it would help me to remain culturally competent and thus increasing the scope for
developing therapeutic relationships.
Rasheed (2015) states that development of the therapeutic relationship between the
patient and the nurse, is one of the important process that promotes faster recovery of the patient.
This relationship is based on trust and respect where the patient feels comfortable in sharing his
order private information to the nurses. The personal information (both mental and physical
information), shared by the patient with the nursing professionals, helps to increase the scope of
developing person-centred care plan. However, it is the duty of the nursing professional to keep

the information of the patient confidential. A nurse can only disclose this information to the
concerned doctor or other members of the multidisciplinary only. Respecting the privacy and
maintaining the confidentiality of the patients’ information help to secure the value of trust and
ethical norms of the nursing practice (Papastavrou, Efstathiou & Andreou 2016).
As per my personal weakness, I have already highlighted that I feel shy in initiating a
communication or speaking in public. However, for the development of the therapeutic
relationship with the patients, I need to work on my effective communication skill. Under the
training of a registered nurse, who has a significant year of experience in the nursing
professional, I will aim to refine my effective communication skills. I will execute the process of
therapeutic relationship once the patient is admitted to the hospital. I will execute my asking the
name of the patient and introducing myself with a smile. I will always listen to the concern of the
patient attentively and my maintaining the eye-contact and will also who compassion and
empathy towards patients sufferings. These will help the patient feel that I am actually relating to
his condition and thus will pave the way for the development of therapeutic relationships.
