Professional Practice
Professional practice is related with the acting of the individual in the professional
conduct. Further, professional nursing practice is based on the certain standards which are
required to be met by the registered nurse in the process of delivering services to the patients.
The standards can consist of the competent level of care given to the patient. The standards for
professional nursing practice are assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning the care
and coordinating the health promotion and prescriptive authority and treatment (RN.com, 2011).
Privacy and Confidentiality within Health Field
In the professional nursing practice, it is important for the nurses to maintain the privacy
and confidentiality through the secured systems. Also, it is the duty of the nurse to safely keep
the personal information of patients private in order to maintain the integrity of the information.
The law for regulating privacy is Privacy Act 1981, Cth which is applies to all the professional
nurse with regard to privacy (Slater & Gordon, 2019). This law is modified by Health
Practitioner Regulation National Law Regulation 2018. For confidentiality, there is no specific
legislation in Australia but the same has legal sense governed by ‘Common Law’.
Patient Rights
Patient’s health care rights are important as it provides the patients to get the right
treatment at the right time which can lead to healthcare outcomes. Moreover, it is the right of the
patient to get the quality of care and also get the equal treatment and fairly treated by the nurse.
Australian Charter of Healthcare Rights consists of the rights of patients and other members
within the healthcare system (Safety and Quality , 2020). This provides the assurance of quality

and safe care which is to be given to the patient. Also, the government of Australia has
recognized the patient rights to get the highest possible standard of physical and mental health.
Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Code of Conduct
There is code of ethics for nursing practice on the basis of which nurses can ensure that
they are acting in a professional conduct. They are the fundamental guides for the professional
practice. The code of conduct determines that the nurses are required to be ethical and must
make ethical decision and also make efforts for fulfilling their responsibilities. Further, Nursing
and Midwifery Board of Australia have professional codes and standards which are needed to be
followed by the nurse (Nursing Midwifery Board, 2020). This seen as important as it defines the
practice and behavior of nurses and midwives in Australia in which code of conduct requires the
evidence-based structures.
Video Case Study
The case study of Nickie who is shown as the nurse in the video should follow the
guidelines of the professional practice. Here, due to the negligence of the nurse, there can be
negative impact on the health of the patient. By following the professional code of conduct of
nursing, Nickie should be active towards the condition of patient and also maintain the
professionalism to fulfill the moral duties towards patient.
