Introduction
Nurses are considered to be important people in healthcare this is because they are
responsible for maintaining the health of the patient. It is very important for nurses to give
proper health and safety measures to patient so that health can be improved. There are some
standards that are set by NMBA for Registered nurses. In this discussion standards of nursing
and professional practice will be discussed with examples.
1. NMBA RN Standards for Practice
Seven standards
Several standards of nursing are set by the NMBA so that a proper framework can be
maintained in nursing. These standards ensure that patients will be provided with proper care
and service. Quality of service can also be improved by following these standards. The
APHRA Standards also describes the behaviour of nurses while they are performing their
duty. Seven standards provide guidelines and these are:
1. Thinks critically and analyses nursing practices.
Under this standard it is required that nurses should adopt various methods of strategies of
critical thinking. This will help in taking evidence based decisions. The main aim of this
standard is to provide culturally safe environment and treatment to the patient (NMBA,
2016).
As a RN student I can also adapt this standard by observing and participating in different
clinical practice. I will work with senior nurses so that I can also learn the aspects of care that
should be given to patient (NMC, 2018).

2. Engages in therapeutic and professional relationship.
Under this standard it is required by nurse to build potential and effective relationship with
patient. This will enhance the professional bond of patient and nurse. A factor of trust and
loyalty will also enhance. This standard will also help in supporting the patient (NMBA,
2016).
As a RN student I can also practice this standard by enhancing communication and
collaboration with patient. I will also try to build a bond of loyalty and I will try to learn from
my senior nurses that how can I create a professional bon with patients (NMC, 2018).
3. Maintains the capability for practice.
Under this standard it is important for nurses to be responsible and accountable to ensure the
safety of the patient. In this standards’ the objective of self-management is also enhanced
because this will help nurses in evaluating their capacity (NMBA, 2016).
As a RN Students I can also adopt this standard in my practice my developing several skills. I
should involve in proper evaluation of the health of the patient and I should respond patient
effectively. I will try to receive all the information from senior nurses regarding controlling
measures that is required to control the health (NMC, 2018).
4. Comprehensively conducts assessment.
Under this standard nurses are required to conduct detailed and systematic assessment. This
will help them in evaluating the results of data and information that are based on nursing
practice (NMBA, 2016).
As a RN student I will adapt this standard in my practice by giving treatment that are
culturally ethical to patients. I will also use different methods to assess the outcomes of the

treatment and health of the patient. I will take suggestions from my senior before initiating
the treatment (NMC, 2018).
5. Develops a plan for nursing practice.
Under this standard nurse are responsible for implementation of the effective communication
and planning. Nurses will develop plans in partnerships with other nurses. These plans are
based on relevant information (NMBA, 2016).
As a RN student I will adapt this standard in my practice by using the relevant data that is
available for the health of the patient. I will take help from my seniors so that I can
effectively develop a plan for the treatment of the patient (NMC, 2018).
6. Provides safe, appropriate and responsive quality nursing practice.
Under this standard actions that are taken by nurses are directed towards achieving goals and
delegate the authorities. This standard is based on evaluation and it is also used for planning
and achieving targets (NMBA, 2016).
As a RN student I will also implement this standard in my practice by taking the clarity on
the goals that I need to achieve. I will also involve in continuous practice so that I will be able
to learn different methods of the treatments (NMC, 2018).
7. Evaluation outcomes to inform nursing practice
Under this standard nurse will be responsible for the evaluation of the treatment that is given
to patient. This evaluation should be based on the gals, plans and policies, results and
practices (NMBA, 2020).

As a RN student I will implement this standard in my practice by involving in effective
evaluation of the goals that I need to achieve. I will also communicate with my senior
regarding future goals and outcomes that I needs to achieve (NMC, 2018).
Potential Practical Strategy
Different strategies are used for each standard so that they can assist the development of
standards. For the first standard, the potential strategy that can be included is a “search
strategy”. This strategy will help nurses in evaluating treatment by analysing previous reports
(Titler, 2008). The second standard of nursing practice can be developed by using
“Professional Patient relationship”. This strategy creates a bridge between patient and nurse.
By this strategy, a mutual understanding will also be created between them. The patient can
also develop positive practical experience (Kornhaber et al., 2016). For the third standard of
nursing practice, the strategy that can be used in development is “Quality improvement”. By
this strategy, quality can be ensured. It can also be measured and evaluated. Quality of care is
an important aspect of the care of the patient (Hughes., 2008). The Fourth standard of nursing
practice can use “Assessment strategy”. In this strategy assessment of the health of the patient
will be assessed. This also helps in evaluating the health status of the patient. The fifth
standard of nursing practice can be developed with an “Innovation Strategy”. The nurse needs
to bring some innovations in their treatment. This can result in positive changes in the health
of the patient. The development of the sixth standard of nursing practice can be done by using
“Safety Strategy”. Patient safety should be the priority of every nurse. The nurse should not
compromise in the safety of patients. This can also help maintain quality in the treatment and
care of the patient. A potential strategy that can be used for the seventh strategy is
“Evaluation strategy”. This strategy plan that is implemented for the treatment of the patient
will be evaluated. It can help know the success rate of the plan.

2. Professional Practice
Professional practice in three areas
Professional practice is a commitment to providing care and support to the patient. It also
helps in continuous self-development. It also helps in showing the spirit of flexibility. There
are also some rules and policies that are set by professionals. Professional practice works in
many areas. Amongst them, three areas in those they deal with are Autonomy,
Accountability, and Advocacy.
Accountability in nursing means being answerable to decisions that are been made.
Accountability in nursing also helps in maintaining the quality of care of the patient.
Outcomes will also be judged and it will also affect the other actions of nurses. Decisions of a
student of the registered nurse should justify their actions. Nurses are also expected to follow
the nursing code of conduct and ethical conduct. Nurses are also liable for legal and
professional terms and conditions. They are also responsible for patients and the public
(Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland , 2020).
As a registered nurse student I will also able to adapt this concept. It can be achieved if I will
develop clear standards of treatment that should be given to patients. I should be clear about
the roles and responsibilities to attain this concept.
Autonomy refers to the ability and capacity of nurses to make decisions within the
profession. Rights and responsibilities re also set against these aspects. Accountability can
only achieve after autonomy is being practiced. Professional practices have to be practiced in
this area because the ability to use different kinds of knowledge can be critically applied in
this area. The autonomy of nurses depends on various factors such as the legislature,
organizational, and individual. Autonomy is also helpful in implementing innovative
treatments that can help patients in recovering (Skår, 2009).

As a registered nurse student I can achieve this concept by enhancing the competence level
in my practice. I should be clear regarding the clinical expectations and opportunities I will
also establish such decision making methods through which my decision making skills will
be improved.
Advocacy is the term that is used to define the professional relationship between nurse and
patient. Every nurse needs to follow the guidelines of advocacy. This will improve their
effectiveness of treatment that is being given to the patient. In the relation between nurse and
patient, there is one factor of trust. This factor helps in supporting the health of the patient. As
a student of RN, I will also try to follow this concept. I will ensure I will build such a
relationship with the patient so that they can easily communicate with me about the problem
they are facing. I will also ensure that treatment of high quality will be given to them so that
they can have relieved from pain and suffering. Teachers should teach this concept to RN
students so that they can also develop knowledge of this concept (Minority Nurse, 2017).
As a RN student I can achieve this concept by ensuring the safety of the patient. I should
double check the treatment that is given to the patient so that there are fewer chances of
medical errors. I should also provide all the required resources to the patients.
Practical Example
Nurses practice based on their knowledge and skills that were taught to them. Nursing is a
combination of theoretical and practical knowledge. It also helps in ensuring the quality of
care while treating patients. Many researchers observed that clinical education influence the
behaviours of students and nurses.
There was a patient who is having a problem of high blood pressure. He is also giving signs
that he is not feeling well. But nurse kept ignoring these signs. Another nurse also warned
responsible nurse regarding the health of the patient but because responsible nurse is

overconfident about her experience. Because of this irresponsible behaviour of responsible
nurse patient have to face problems and he is been shifted to ICU. Nurse realizes this mistake
later and she also apologies (Lewis, 2006).
In this example, it has been shown that these achieve concepts is the duty of nurses. They are
responsible for the environment of the hospital. Nurses are also responsible to meet the target
of patient ratio in the hospital. The nurse should be responsible for the care of the patient and
they are responsible for their actions. They will treat the patient after analyzing their
condition. There are times when nurses have to make decisions as it is also considered to be
part of nursing standards. This can also help solve the minor issue that is been faced by
hospitals (ER Services , 2020).
3. Code of Conduct
The Code of conduct is considered to be a collection of rules and regulations that are set by
the government. Codes of conduct are set by the healthcare department. These codes of
conduct will help set a specific behaviour. In nursing code of conduct is important because it
helps nurses in maintaining the rules and policies that are set by the government. It also
creates a framework for nurses to provide quality care to their patients. Many principles are
set under this code of conduct. This concept consists of four domains namely, Practise
Legally, Practise safety, effectively and collaboratively, Act with professional integrity and
promote health and wellbeing. All these domains consist of a different set of principles.
These principles will help in evaluating the performance of nurses in hospitals.
Principles
Two principles that will be discussed are “Cultural practice and respectful relationships” and
“Teaching, supervising and assessing”.

 Culturally practice and respectful relationships
This is considered to be the third principle of the nursing code of conduct. Nurses are
responsible to engage with patients in a safe environment. It also helps in fostering and
enhancing the relationship between nurse and patient. Many obligations have to be faced by a
nurse to provide quality of care. Nurses are also responsible to maintain dignity and respect
for their patients. Six values are been involved in this principle. These values are Aboriginal
and straits islander people’s health, culturally safe and respectful practice, effective
communication, bullying and harassment, confidentiality and privacy, and end of life care.
Registered nurses are expected to practice these principles of code of conduct in their practice
(Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia , 2019).
As a registered nurse I will required to build trust between them and patients. This will also
help me in providing a quality of care and services to patients. Since I will be personally
involved with patients it is expected from me that I will support the patient. This will also
help me in providing positive support to patients. Patients can also trust nurses when they are
providing quality of service to them. It is also expected from me that a culturally valuable
treatments will be provided to patients but before providing treatment it is my responsibility
to analyse the reports of the patient. Since it is related to the health of patient I should be
confident about the treatment. I must know all the aspects that are related with the treatment.
I should also maintain the trust of the pubic as it is my responsibility. I will also maintain
integrity while performing these principles. I will be honest about the treatment that is given
to the patient. I will also deliver treatment in a culturally safe environment so that it proper
care and health of the patient can be maintained. By applying this value in principles I can
easily adopt this principle in their practice.
 Teaching, supervising and assessing

This is considered to be the fifth principle in the code of conduct of nursing. As a Nurse I will
be committed towards educating teaching, supervising and assessing students. It is my
responsibility to educate and teach students so that they can also practice nursing standards in
the future. Two values are involved in this principle namely, teaching and supervising and
assessing colleagues and students (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia , 2019).
Examples
Case-1
Michael is working as a registered nurse in a hospital. There was a patient in a hospital who
is suffering from the harmful disease. Before involving in treatment Michael forgets to ask
that if the patient is comfortable with the treatment that will be provided to her. As a result of
that at the time of treatment, she got uncomfortable and the patient feels that she has no
choice left. Further, family of patient has filed complain against Michael because he has not
taken permission form patient before initiating the treatment. As a result of that patient was
uncomfortable. Further, the facility manager asks Michael about the code of conduct he was
required to follow before involving in any kind of treatment with the patient. In this case, the
principle that is violated is “Culturally practice and respectful relationships”. If Michael
followed this principle he would have not faced this situation (Nursing and Midwifery Board
of Australia , 2017).
Case-2
Mary was a registered nurse that was involved in the care of aged patients. Under the
supervision of Mary, there was a student. Mary was responsible to teach her the applications
and principles of nursing. But because of her improper supervision, Mary told her student to
take care of the patient. Student was unaware about the treatment practice since the student
was not having any experience she lacks proper care. This has cause a problem to patient.

Mary also has to face consequences. A case is filed against Mary for her irresponsible
behaviour. If Mary would have applied the principle of teaching, supervising and assessing
she can save herself from indulging in this situation (Nursing and Midwifery Board of
Australia , 2017).
Conclusion
It has been concluded that there are some standards that are set by NMBA and it is essential
for all uses to follow these standard. Nurses are also required to practice these standards so
that they can ensure quality of service to their patients. Students of RN are also requested to
learn and follow these standards and guidelines that are essential to follow.
